Efforts of a Kansas foundation to increase physical activity and improve health by funding community trails, 2012.

INTRODUCTION: Trails are associated with increased physical activity; however, little is known about the process of building trails by various types of organizations. From 2005 through 2012 the Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans (Sunflower) funded multiple organizations to construct 70 trails of varying lengths and surfaces in municipalities, schools, and communities across Kansas. The purpose of this study was to assess the process of developing and implementing community trail projects across Kansas with funding from a public foundation. METHODS: In 2012, we stratified funded org

[Macro-epidemiologic aspects of schistosomiasis mansoni: analysis of the impacts of irrigation systems on the spatial profile of the endemic in Bahia, Brazil].

Studies in African countries have shown an association between irrigation projects and the spread of schistosomiasis mansoni and haematobium. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association between irrigation levels and the occurrence and spread of Schistosoma mansoni infection in the State of Bahia. Two forms of irrigation were developed in the State of Bahia: the first is capital-intensive and mechanized, requiring little manual labor. The second is labor-intensive and characterized by limited mechanization. According to the study, the municipalities with the largest irrig

Neighborhood Contexts and Healthcare Utilization in Patients with Breast Cancer Receiving Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Racialized economic segregation is linked to higher cancer-specific mortality; however, its impact on healthcare utilization (HCU) remains unclear. This study used the metric Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE) and evaluated the association between racial residential segregation (ICErace), racialized economic segregation (ICErace + income), and HCU among patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. METHODS: Patients ≥18 years who received chemotherapy and surgical management for stage I to III breast cancer (2012-2020) were identified in the electronic health recor

Street-view vegetation, human mobility, and dengue fever: context-dependent risk in urban green spaces.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between urban vegetation and dengue risk remains unclear, partly because most studies rely on static residential exposure and coarse greenness measures. This study examined how street-view vegetation and human mobility jointly influence neighborhood-level dengue risk in Guangzhou, China. METHODS: We analyzed 1,054 communities in Guangzhou using 3,972 locally acquired dengue cases from 2015 to 2019. Street-view images were used to derive grass, plant, and tree cover, while Landsat imagery provided NDVI. Row-standardized origin-destination mobility networks were use

Family endowments and multidimensional poverty among urban older adults living alone.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in family endowments play a pivotal role in shaping the multidimensional poverty among urban older adults living alone (UOALA). METHODS: This study conducted an empirical analysis using data from 1,656 UOALA in five different cities in China to investigate the relationship between family endowments and the occurrence of multidimensional poverty among UOALA. RESULTS: The findings illustrate an expanding and deepening scale of poverty among UOALA, particularly manifested in dimensions of physical health and mental well-being. Females, super-older adults, and those resid

Impact of neighbourhood and environmental factors on the risk of incident cardiovascular disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: We aimed to study the association of five key neighbourhood exposures in large cohort studies and risk of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase from database inception to 20th October 2024. Included studies reported both incident (first-time) CVD diagnosis and neighbourhood exposures across five domains: retail environment, health services, physical environment, pollution, and neighbourhood deprivation. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed to estimate pooled risk o

Co-developing equity-oriented neighbourhood care for children and young people with multiple long-term conditions: a concept mapping study in South London.

Children and young people (CYP) with multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) rely on services spanning health, education, and social care, but fragmented pathways may widen inequalities and shift coordination work to families. We aimed to identify priorities for equity-oriented neighbourhood care. We conducted a participatory mixed-methods study informed by the Medical Research Council framework and group concept mapping. Sixteen stakeholders participated: three CYP, seven parents, five healthcare professionals (HCPs), and one community stakeholder. Participants generated, sorted, and rated cand

Socioeconomic inequalities in residential greenness: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Residential greenness has been linked to multiple health benefits. However, its distribution across socioeconomic groups has not been systematically quantified. OBJECTIVE: The aims are to: (i) characterize the magnitude of socioeconomic inequalities in the distribution of residential greenness, as measured by NDVI, across urban populations; (ii) evaluate the consistency of these inequalities across geographic regions and investigate potential sources of between-study heterogeneity; and (iii) synthesize existing evidence to identify knowledge gaps and inform equity-oriented urban a

Data-driven insights into neighborhood adherence to cancer prevention guidelines in Philadelphia.

BACKGROUND: Forty percent of new cancer cases in the United States are attributed to modifiable risks, which can be influenced by the built environment. Recent cancer prevention guidelines include recommendations for making communities conducive to healthy living. Focused on the city of Philadelphia, the present study aims to 1) evaluate neighborhood-level adherence to cancer prevention guidelines by developing two novel indices and 2) identify factors driving low compliance in neighborhoods with high cancer mortality. METHODS: Philadelphia neighborhoods were compared to the city overall on t

The development of youth antisocial behavior across time and context: A systematic review and integration of person-centered and variable-centered research.

BACKGROUND: Trajectories of youth antisocial behavior (ASB) are characterized by continuity and change. Although numerous longitudinal studies have examined ASB, findings from person-centered and variable-centered research have not yet been integrated. The present paper integrates findings across statistical methods for a more comprehensive understanding of the development of ASB. Neighborhood disadvantage is considered as a core moderator. METHODS: The study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database of systematic reviews (registration number CRD42021255820). The PsycINFO and PubMed da

A Brief Report on Living Arrangements Following Gray Divorce.

OBJECTIVES: We offer new insights on how older adults in the United States navigate the aftermath of gray divorce (i.e., divorce that occurs among adults aged 50+) by describing their living arrangements upon divorce and tracking the stability of these configurations over time. Living arrangements are important to decipher because they are linked to health, well-being, and longevity. METHODS: Using data from the 1998-2014 Health and Retirement Study, we uncovered patterns of U.S. older adult living arrangements upon divorce (N = 1,057), distinguishing among those who lived alone, lived with o

"It's no foundation, there's no stabilization, you're just scattered": A qualitative study of the institutional circuit of recently-evicted people who use drugs.

People who use drugs (PWUD) commonly experience housing instability due to intersecting structural vulnerabilities (e.g., drug prohibition, discriminatory housing policies), and prejudicial or illegal evictions are common. In Vancouver, Canada, evictions have proliferated in the Downtown Eastside, a historically low-income neighbourhood with high rates of drug use and housing instability, resulting in many PWUD being evicted into homelessness. This study characterizes housing trajectories of recently-evicted PWUD through the lens of the institutional circuit of homelessness, and explores how w

Decline in older adults' daily mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic: the role of individual and built environment factors.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research has shown that the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impacted the daily mobility of older adults. However, very little attention has been paid to the role of individual and built environmental factors in decline in older adults' daily mobility during the pandemic. METHODS: Based on a cohort survey of 741 older adults in Hong Kong, we conducted a one-way ANOVA to explore the differences in determinants (individual or environmental factors) of older adults' daily mobility between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, multilevel linear regression was perfo

Social Group Differences in Influencing Factors for Chinese Urban Residents' Subjective Well-Being: From the Perspective of Social Stratification.

With the great pressure of modern social life, the problem of residents' subjective well-being has attracted scholars' attention. Against the background of institutional transformation, China has a special social stratification structure. The socio-economic resources and living needs of different social classes are different, resulting in differences in the level of subjective well-being and the influencing factors for this. Taking Guangzhou as an example, based on the data of a household survey conducted in 2016, this paper obtains the social hierarchical structure through two-step clustering

Systemic racism can get under our skin and into our genes.

Special Issue - Race reconciled II: Interpreting and communicating biological variation and race in 2021 Many sociocultural factors, like poverty and trauma, or homelessness versus a safe neighborhood, can get "under our skin" and affect our lives. These factors may also get "into our genes" through epigenetic changes that influence how genes are expressed. Changes in gene expression can further influence how we respond to sociocultural factors and how those factors impact our physical and mental health, creating a feedback loop between our sociocultural environment and our genome.
