Cover cropping enhances fruit quality in protected citrus cultivation by modulating rhizosphere microbiome and iron availability.

INTRODUCTION: Citrus is one of the most widely cultivated fruit trees worldwide, and protected cultivation has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Cover cropping improves orchard soil health, yet its mechanisms in protected citrus cultivation remain unclear. This study investigated how white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) affect soil properties, rhizosphere microbiota, and fruit quality in greenhouse-grown 'Kanpei' citrus through integrated analyses of soil physicochemical properties, high-throughput amplicon sequencing, and microbial isolation. RESUL…

Simplified synergistic rhizosphere bacterial consortia enhance the antagonistic activities against Ralstonia solanacearum and improve plant health.

The rhizosphere microbiota plays a vital role in plant stress resistance and pathogen suppression. Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, leads to significant economic losses in a wide variety of crops. The utilization of native microbial consortia has emerged as a promising strategy for combating this disease. In this study, we assembled a synthetic microbial consortium (Co-4) from rhizosphere bacteria with demonstrated antagonistic activity, comprising four strains of Bacillus sp., Heyndrickxia sp., Franconibacter sp., and Pseudomonas sp. Transcriptome analysis of tomato plants tr…

Lanthanum supplementation with abscisic acid modulates rhizosphere dynamics through changes in nitric oxide synthesis in wheat.

Lanthanum (La), a rare earth element (REE) found its wide applications in the agricultural land practices. Utilization of La as a fertilizer is based on its concentration for staple crops, including wheat (Triticum aestivum). We have investigated the role of a beneficial dose of La (60 μM) along with ABA (10 μM) in improving wheat root dynamics and defense systems (ascorbate-glutathione pathway, secondary metabolites, and nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis). Co-application of La60 and ABA significantly enhanced all the root dynamic attributes along with defense systems and reduced production of re

Methylotrophic bacteria from rice paddy soils: mineral-nitrogen-utilizing isolates richness in bulk soil and rhizosphere.

Methanol, the second most abundant volatile organic compound, primarily released from plants, is a major culprit disturbing atmospheric chemistry. Interestingly, ubiquitously found methanol-utilizing bacteria, play a vital role in mitigating atmospheric methanol effects. Despite being extensively characterized, the effect of nitrogen sources on the richness of methanol-utilizers in the bulk soil and rhizosphere is largely unknown. Therefore, the current study was planned to isolate, characterize and explore the richness of cultivable methylotrophs from the bulk soil and rhizosphere of a paddy …

Biosurfactant production by a rhizosphere bacteria Bacillus altitudinis MS16 and its promising emulsification and antifungal activity.

Generally, most of the biosurfactant producing microbes are the common inhabitants of hydrocarbon contaminated sites. However, there are a very few literatures that report the existence of biosurfactant producing microbes in rhizosphere soil of plants involved in remediation of pesticide laden agricultural soil and in general welfare of the plants indicating the necessity of further research. A total of twenty three morphologically distinct rhizosphere strains were isolated and were screened for biosurfactant production through preliminary biosurfactant screening assays. Based on the screening…

Microbe associated molecular patterns from rhizosphere bacteria trigger germination and Papaver somniferum metabolism under greenhouse conditions.

Ten PGPR from different backgrounds were assayed on Papaver somniferum var. Madrigal to evaluate their potential as biotic elicitors to increase alkaloid content under the rationale that some microbe associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) are able to trigger plant metabolism. First, the 10 strains and their culture media at two different concentrations were tested for their ability to trigger seed germination. Then, the best three strains were tested for their ability to increase seedling growth and alkaloid levels under greenhouse conditions. Only three strains and their culture media enhanced

Antagonistic activity and biocontrol potential of Pseudomonas sp. T19G isolated from the tomato rhizosphere against Ralstonia solanacearum.

Tomato bacterial wilt, caused by the soilborne bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, remains difficult to manage, creating a need for biologically derived control agents. Here, we isolated Pseudomonas sp. T19G from the rhizosphere soil of healthy tomato plants and evaluated its antagonistic activity, protective effects, genomic basis, and influence on rhizosphere function. T19G fermentation broth inhibited R. solanacearum, and sterile cell-free supernatant caused a dose-dependent decline in viable pathogen populations. T19G significantly reduced viable root-associated pathogen populations and path…

Community Succession and Diversity Variation of Endophytic and Rhizosphere Soil Bacteria Across Gastrodia elata Seed Formation Stages.

The Gastrodia elata Blume (GE) life cycle is unique, since its successful germination and growth rely on symbiosis with specific fungi (e.g., Armillaria mellea). However, the community succession, tissue specificity and functional potential of endophytic and rhizosphere bacterial communities during the seed formation stage of GE remain unclear. Here, we used high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing to systematically explore the composition, diversity, and dynamic succession of bacterial communities across different stages of seed formation and among various tissues. Our results revealed that t…

Rhizosphere bacterial characteristics reveal the invasive advantage of Sphagneticola trilobata compared to the greening grass Axonopus compressus.

BACKGROUND: Biological invasions pose a major threat to ecosystem stability, yet the role of rhizosphere microbiomes in conferring competitive advantages to invasive plants remains insufficiently understood. In particular, whether invasive plants outperform resident or naturalized species by assembling distinct and functionally advantageous bacterial communities is still unclear. We hypothesized that the invasive plant Sphagneticola trilobata gains a competitive advantage by selectively recruiting beneficial rhizosphere bacteria, whereas the long-naturalized greening grass Axonopus compressus …

Climate change impacts on Xanthium strumarium distribution: Integrating species distribution models with rhizosphere microbiome analysis in China.

Global environmental changes increasingly alter species distributions, yet their effects on plants serving both ecological and economic functions remain inadequately explored. We examined Xanthium strumarium, a species with medicinal and invasive properties, throughout China using integrated approaches: species distribution modeling (Biomod2), niche analysis (Ecospat), and rhizosphere microbiome profiling (Tax4Fun). Our findings demonstrate that human footprint index (66.6% variable importance), elevation, and topographic slope primarily determine current distribution patterns. Future climate …

Antagonistic activity of PGPR isolated from the avocado (Persea americana) rhizosphere on Phytophthora cinnamomi and Lasiodiplodia theobromae.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have proven to be a sustainable alternative for managing plant pathogens. Developing inoculants with these PGPRs requires a rigorous selection of highly effective native bacterial isolates. In the present study, 29 bacterial isolates were obtained from the rhizosphere of 'Zutano' avocado (Persea americana Mill.), a rootstock widely used for the commercial cultivar 'Hass', from a commercial orchard on the northern coast of Peru. Two antagonistic isolates showing the highest in vitro inhibition capacity were selected to evaluate their efficacy against …
