Evaluation of the effect of EDTAC, CDTA, and EGTA on radicular dentin microhardness.

The effect of EDTAC (ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid plus Cetavion, an ammonium surfactant), CDTA (cyclohexane-1,2-diaminetetra-acetic acid), and EGTA (ethylene glycol-bis-(beta-amino-ethyl ether) N,N,N',N'-tetra-acetic acid) on the microhardness of radicular dentin of the cervical third of human teeth was studied. Five newly extracted maxillary incisors were sectioned transversely at the cementoenamel junction, and the crowns were discarded. The roots were embedded in blocks of high-speed polymerized acrylic resin and cut transversely into 1-mm sections. The second slice of the cervical thi

Eruption pattern of autotransplanted premolars visualized by radiographic color-coding.

Eruption patterns and root growth were visualized with the use of a new technique, radiographic color-coding, for comparison of the development of autotransplanted premolars with contralateral control teeth. Rates of eruption and root growth were studied. The eruption pattern and rate was assessed relative to the first molar. Maximum rates were found to occur between 30 and 60 days after transplantation. There were no significant differences between transplants and their contralaterals. Two distinct categories of eruption patterns were demonstrated. One group showed a tendency toward an initia

Assessment of interradicular areas and cortical bone thickness for orthodontic mini-implant placement: a cone-beam computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Mini-implant has become an accepted and reliable method for providing absolute anchorage in orthodontics. It is known that incorrect implant positioning can increase the failure rates and damage the adjacent tooth roots. This study aimed to assess the interradicular areas and cortical bone thickness for orthodontic mini-implant placement using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT scans of 100 subjects (42 males, 58 females; mean age of 16.32 ± 5.72 years) were selected consecutively from the records archive of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedi

Finite element analysis of occlusal stress in cervical dentin: effects of thickness and cross-section.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: The cervical region of dentin plays a crucial role in the distribution of masticatory forces, with vertical root fractures often initiating and spreading from this area. This study investigates the distribution of occlusal stresses in the cervical region of root dentin, considering varying thicknesses and cross-sections, using Finite Element Analysis. MATERIALS & METHODS: Sections from central and premolar teeth were imported into CAD to create 3D models. The tooth structure and surrounding tissues were modeled using mechanical properties such as Young's modulus and Po

Assessment of enamel hypoplasia in autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED).

The features of enamel hypoplasia in a small group of patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) are described. Using a recently developed method, the authors evaluated quantitatively the amount of defect in each tooth by measuring the width of the hypoplastic lesions and dividing the value by the crown height. They then assessed the degree of damage in each tooth type (from central incisors to second premolars) and patient. Canines were the most severely affected among maxillary and mandibular teeth, but all tooth types were involved. Analysing both

Role of cementoenamel junction on the radicular penetration of 30% hydrogen peroxide during intracoronal bleaching in vitro.

Intracoronal bleaching of nonvital, teeth with 30% hydrogen peroxide is occasionally associated with external cervical root resorption. The exact mechanism by which bleaching induced root resorption occurs is not yet fully understood. The relationship of cementum to the enamel at the cementoenamel junction may have clinical significance. Seventeen single rooted human mandibular premolars extracted atraumatically for orthodontic reasons were used. The radicular hydrogen peroxide penetration in each tooth was measured in vitro by an indirect colorimetric method. Thereafter, the teeth were examin

A quantitative evaluation of the spatial displacement of the gingival zenith in the maxillary anterior dentition.

BACKGROUND: The appearance of gingival tissues plays an important role in the esthetics of the anterior maxillary region of the mouth. The gingival zenith (GZ) is defined as the most apical point of the marginal gingival scallop; however, its quantitative orientation in the apico-coronal (AC) and mesio-distal (MD) directions has not been reported. Thus, this study aimed to quantify the specific spatial displacement of the GZ in the maxillary anterior dentition. METHODS: Bilateral measurements, taken with a digital caliper in maxillary stone casts from periodontally healthy volunteers, were re

Dental erosion patterns from intrinsic acid regurgitation and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of lesions from dental erosion due to intrinsic acid regurgitation and vomiting may be different from patterns of dental erosion due to extrinsic acids. To date studies have failed to validate this assumption. This study described the sites and nature of lesions from dental erosion in cases of intrinsic acid regurgitation, and compared them with the distribution of lesions occurring in age and sex matched controls, whose lesions are due to extrinsic acids. METHODS: The University of Queensland tooth wear clinic patients were screened to select 30 cases, 21 self-id

Analysis of the surface characteristics and mineralization status of feline teeth using scanning electron microscopy.

External resorption of teeth by odontoclasts is a common condition of unknown origin affecting domestic cats. Odontoclastic resorptive lesions involve the enamel cementum junction (ECJ, cervix) and root surface, leading to extensive loss of enamel, dentine and cementum. This study was undertaken in order to determine whether features of the surface anatomy and mineralization of feline teeth could explain why odontoclastic resorptive lesions are so prevalent in this species. Backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy was used to study enamel, cementum and dentine in non-resorbed, undem
