Vital and Clinical Signs Gathered Within the First Minutes After a Motorcycle Accident on a Racetrack: an Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about vital signs during the very first minutes after an accident. This study aimed to describe the vital signs of motorcycle riders shortly after racetrack crashes and examine the clinical value of these data for the prehospital clinical assessments. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort based on data from medical records on 104 motorcycle accidents at a racetrack in Sweden, covering the season of 2019 (May 01 until September 17), was conducted. Both race and practice runs were included. In addition, data from the Swedish Trauma Registry were used for pati

Homocysteine and cognitive disorders of postmenopausal women measured by a battery of computer tests--central nervous system vital signs.

The purpose of the study was the analysis of cognitive functions in postmenopausal women having different status of homocysteine levels by a battery of computer tests-central nervous system vital signs (CNS-VS). We examined whether homocysteine increases the risk of cognitive decline and which cognitive domains are more affected. We showed that the considerably better neurocognitive index was obtained by women with low homocysteine levels in comparison with those with hyperhomocysteinemia (p = 0.0017). Similarly, results were obtained in the field of executive functioning (p = 0.0011), complex

A protocol for developing early warning score models from vital signs data in hospitals using ensembles of decision trees.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple early warning scores (EWS) have been developed and implemented to reduce cardiac arrests on hospital wards. Case-control observational studies that generate an area under the receiver operator curve (AUROC) are the usual validation method, but investigators have also generated EWS with algorithms with no prior clinical knowledge. We present a protocol for the validation and comparison of our local Hamilton Early Warning Score (HEWS) with that generated using decision tree (DT) methods. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A database of electronically recorded vital signs from 4 medica

Utility of monitoring capnography, pulse oximetry, and vital signs in the detection of airway mishaps: a hyperoxemic animal model.

This study was undertaken to determine the time interval for changes in end-tidal CO2, oxygen saturation (SaO2), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP) in response to an acute airway obstruction or hypopharyngeal extubation in a hyperoxemic model. Complete and partial airway obstructions were simulated with complete and partial cross-clamping of an endotracheal (ET) tube in five anesthetized, nonparalyzed, mechanically ventilated Yorkshire minipigs with initial PAo2 of > 400 mm Hg. Placement of the ET tube into the hypopharynx was performed to simulate accidental extubation. Both sidestream

A Wearable Multimodal Vital Sign Detection and Photobiomodulation Device for Early Brain Injury Treatment: A Feasibility Study.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly among military personnel, poses significant challenges in acute management and long-term outcomes. Difficult-to-diagnose autoregulatory and inflammatory changes lead to neurocognitive impairment, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and chronic pain. To optimize readiness and test therapeutics for both diagnostic and future TBI treatments, this feasibility study introduces a novel wearable multimodal platform that integrates photoplethysmography and infra-red (IR) sensing from a camera and a wearable sensor to detect vital signs and then leverages machine lear

Continuous vital sign monitoring of acute Lassa fever using wearable biosensor devices in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is a fulminant viral illness associated with high in-hospital mortality. This disease constitutes a serious public health concern in West Africa, in particular Nigeria and the Mano River Union region (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone). In Sierra Leone, continuous monitoring of critically ill patients is hindered by a lack of equipment and personnel. METHODS: We used wearable biosensor devices to remotely monitor hospitalized individuals with acute Lassa fever in order to describe vital sign trends that may be associated with clinical outcome and to evaluate the feasib

The Physical Activity Vital Sign and associations with cardiometabolic risks in people with bipolar disorder in a low-income country.

BACKGROUND: The mortality gap compared with the general population is with 29 years of potential life lost for people with bipolar disorder (BD) highest in Africa. The most significant contributor to premature mortality are preventable cardiovascular diseases due to an unhealthy lifestyle. This study investigated if the Physical Activity Vital Sign (PAVS), i.e. two questions which clarify if someone meets the recommended 150 min of physical activity (PA) per week, can identify patients with BD at higher risk of cardiometabolic abnormalities and mental health symptoms in a low-income country fr

Specific patterns of vital sign fluctuations predict infection and enable sepsis diagnosis in pediatric burn patients.

Early recognition of the clinical signs of bloodstream infection in pediatric burn patients is key to improving survival rates in the burn unit. The objective of this study was to propose a simple scoring criteria that used readily available temperature, heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) data to accurately predict bloodstream infection in pediatric burn patients. A retrospective chart review included 100 patients admitted to the pediatric burn unit for >20% total body surface area (TBSA) burn injuries. Each patient had multiple blood culture tests, and each test was treated as a

Non-contact video-based vital sign monitoring using ambient light and auto-regressive models.

Remote sensing of the reflectance photoplethysmogram using a video camera typically positioned 1 m away from the patient's face is a promising method for monitoring the vital signs of patients without attaching any electrodes or sensors to them. Most of the papers in the literature on non-contact vital sign monitoring report results on human volunteers in controlled environments. We have been able to obtain estimates of heart rate and respiratory rate and preliminary results on changes in oxygen saturation from double-monitored patients undergoing haemodialysis in the Oxford Kidney Unit. Separation of thoracic and abdominal measurements in neonatal vital sign monitoring using radar vision fusion system.

Non-contact, rapid and accurate measurement of respiratory rates (RR) and heart rates (HR) in neonates has significant clinical importance. Existing methods predominantly focus on thoracic respiratory signal measurement. This thoracic-focused approach, when applied to neonates who exhibit predominantly abdominal breathing, leads to a low signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) that compromises the accuracy of RR measurement compared with using abdominal signal. Moreover, neonatal and staff motion in clinical environments pose challenges for the robustness of monitoring systems. In this paper, a met

Identifying Patients at Risk for Cardiometabolic and Chronic Diseases by Using the Exercise Vital Sign to Screen for Physical Inactivity.

INTRODUCTION: Physical inactivity is a major health risk factor for multiple chronic diseases and early death. Despite evidence supporting diet and physical activity behavioral counseling interventions, physical inactivity is rarely measured or managed in primary care. A need exists to fully explore and demonstrate the value of screening patients for physical inactivity. This study aimed to 1) compare health profiles of patients screened for inactivity versus patients not screened for inactivity, and 2) compare health profiles of inactive, insufficiently active, and active patients as measured
