Generating Electricity While Walking with Smart Magnetoelastic Insoles.

Human walking generates renewable and accessible energy with a potential output of up to 67 W. However, effectively harnessing this energy is significantly impeded by the high humidity within the shoe, stemming from both the human body and the surrounding environment. In response to this challenge, we introduce an intrinsically waterproof and biocompatible magnetoelastic smart insole engineered to generate electricity during walking by utilizing the giant magnetoelastic effect. The smart insole features an ultralow internal impedance of ∼80 Ω, a substantial current output up to 59.9 mA, and a …

Sensorimotor incongruence during walking using delayed visual feedback.

The ability to detect small errors between sensory prediction in the brain and actual sensory feedback is important in rehabilitation after brain injury, where motor function needs to be restored. To date in the recent study, a delayed visual error detection task during upper limb movement was used to measure this ability for healthy participants or patients. However, this ability during walking, which is the most sought-after in brain-injured patients, was unclear. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of walking parameters, the sense of body heaviness, and delayed err…

Inhibitory control explains locomotor statistics in walking Drosophila.

In order to forage for food, many animals regulate not only specific limb movements but the statistics of locomotor behavior, switching between long-range dispersal and local search depending on resource availability. How premotor circuits regulate locomotor statistics is not clear. Here, we analyze and model locomotor statistics and their modulation by attractive food odor in walking Drosophila. Food odor evokes three motor regimes in flies: baseline walking, upwind running during odor, and search behavior following odor loss. During search, we find that flies adopt higher angular velocities …

Dynamical systems theory applied to short walking trials.

Human walking is an extremely complex neuromuscular activity whose simplicity disappears when an attempt is made to provide a quantitative description of the process. The dynamical systems theory provides a framework for analyzing the stability and chaotic nature of dynamical systems, employing Floquet multipliers (FM) and long and short-term Lyapunov exponents (LE), respectively. This report compares FM and LE from three methods: method A (false nearest neighbors and numerical approximation), method B (false nearest neighbors and semi-analytical technique) and method C (singular value decompo…

Kinematics associated with treadmill walking in Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals with Rett syndrome suffer from severely impaired cognitive and motor performance. Current movement-related therapeutic programs often include traditional physical therapy activities and assisted treadmill walking routines for those individuals who are ambulatory. However, there are no quantitative reports of kinematic gait parameters obtained during treadmill walking. The purpose of this research was to characterize the kinematic patterns of the lower limbs during treadmill walking as speed was slowly increased. METHODS: Seventeen independently ambulatory f…

Perception of Gait Asymmetry During Split-Belt Walking.

Optimization of gait rehabilitation using split-belt treadmills critically depends on our understanding of the roles of somatosensory perception and sensorimotor recalibration in perceiving gait asymmetry and adapting to split-belt walking. Recent evidence justifies the hypothesis that perception of gait asymmetry is based mainly on detection of temporal mismatches between afferent inputs at the spinal level.

Shared muscle synergies in human walking and cycling.

The motor system may rely on a modular organization (muscle synergies activated in time) to execute different tasks. We investigated the common control features of walking and cycling in healthy humans from the perspective of muscle synergies. Three hypotheses were tested: 1) muscle synergies extracted from walking trials are similar to those extracted during cycling; 2) muscle synergies extracted from one of these motor tasks can be used to mathematically reconstruct the electromyographic (EMG) patterns of the other task; 3) muscle synergies of cycling can result from merging synergies of wal…

Walking ability in patients with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a multiple joint condition which affects both lower and upper extremities and thus affects ambulation. Multiple surgeries are needed to correct limb deformity in order to promote walking. The objective of this study is to identify the most critical residual deformity that diminishes the ambulatory status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 51 patients were included in this study, 14 patients were nonambulatory. The mean age at first surgery was 4.1 years (range 2-16 years). The mean length of followup was 44.0 months (range 22-168 months). Type of p…

Tests of walking balance for screening vestibular disorders.

Few reliable tests are available for screening people rapidly for vestibular disorders although such tests would be useful for a variety of testing situations. Balance testing is widely performed but of unknown value for screening. The goal of this study was to determine the value of tests of walking balance for screening people with vestibular impairments. We tested three groups of patients with known vestibular impairments: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, unilateral vestibular weakness, and post-acoustic neuroma resection. We compared them to normal subjects. All subjects were independ…

Walking stability using harmonic ratios in Parkinson's disease.

Kinematic changes in Parkinson's disease (PD) gait are well documented; however, upper body dynamics are less understood. Harmonic ratios (HRs) measure the rhythm of trunk accelerations and can be examined in the vertical, anterior-posterior, and mediolateral planes, providing an indication of global walking stability (lower HR indicates poorer stability). We examined differences in HRs between persons with PD and healthy older adults and relationships between HRs and stride parameters. Eleven people with PD and 11 older adults walked over ground at their preferred pace. A triaxial acceleromet…

Walkaround: mobile balance support for therapy of walking.

We describe here the Walkaround, a new rehabilitation device that allows walking without hand support of individuals with limited ability to control posture. The design of this device was motivated by the recent development of functional electrical therapy of walking in individuals with hemiplegia, who in many cases need postural and body weight assistance while walking. The Walkaround assists humans with a compromised posture, inability to fully support the body weight on one leg, and prevents their falls. These three features are accomplished by an ergonomic lumbar belt being attached to a r…

[Walking activity in prosthesis-bearing lower-limb amputees].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: A large body of literature has been devoted to gait analysis in amputees. Most studies have been conducted in the laboratory setting where numerous variables are analyzed: gait efficiency, energy cost, walking velocity. At the present time however, data are lacking on the real-life use of walking prostheses. Little is known about how long patients wear their prosthesis or how difficult it is for them to walk during different periods of the day. Currently, such information depends on the quality of the interview and the patient-physician relationship. A precise assessment …
