Children with 7q11.23 duplication syndrome: psychological characteristics.

To begin to delineate the psychological characteristics associated with classic 7q11.23 duplication syndrome (duplication of the classic Williams syndrome region; hereafter classic Dup7), we tested 63 children with classic Dup7 aged 4-17 years. Sixteen toddlers aged 18-45 months with classic Dup7 and 12 adults identified by cascade testing also were assessed. For the child group, median General Conceptual Ability (similar to IQ) on the Differential Ability Scales-II was 85.0 (low average), with a range from severe disability to high average ability. Median reading and mathematics achievement s

Newborn brain event-related potentials revealing atypical processing of sound frequency and the subsequent association with later literacy skills in children with familial dyslexia.

The role played by an auditory-processing deficit in dyslexia has been debated for several decades. In a longitudinal study using brain event-related potentials (ERPs) we investigated 1) whether dyslexic children with familial risk background would show atypical pitch processing from birth and 2) how these newborn ERPs later relate to these same children's pre-reading cognitive skills and literacy outcomes. Auditory ERPs were measured at birth for tones varying in pitch and presented in an oddball paradigm (1100 Hz, 12%, and 1000 Hz, 88%). The brain responses of the typically reading control g

Functional brain asymmetry, attentional modulation, and interhemispheric transfer in boys with Tourette syndrome.

We tested the hypothesis that children with Tourette syndrome (TS) would exhibit aberrant brain lateralization compared to a healthy control (HC) group in an attention-modulation version of a verbal dichotic listening task using consonant-vowel syllables. The modulation of attention to focus on the right ear stimulus in the dichotic listening situation is thought to involve the same prefrontal attentional and executive functions that are involved in the suppression of tics, whereas, performance when focusing attention on the left ear stimulus additionally involves a callosal transfer of inform

Multiple cognitive capabilities/deficits in children with an autism spectrum disorder: "weak" central coherence and its relationship to theory of mind and executive control.

This study examined the validity of "weak" central coherence (CC) in the context of multiple cognitive capabilities/deficits in autism. Children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and matched typically developing children were administered tasks tapping visuospatial coherence, false-belief understanding and aspects of executive control. Significant group differences were found in all three cognitive domains. Evidence of local processing on coherence tasks was widespread in the ASD group, but difficulties in attributing false beliefs and in components of executive functioning were present i

Quality of life and functional evaluation after supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy in Mexican patients.

This study assessed the functional results in patients treated primarily through supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (CHEP). Fifteen patients with a diagnosis of epidermoid carcinoma of the glottis region admitted to the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología (México) between June 2001 and September 2002 were studied. Three patients were at stage I, five at stage II, six at stage III, and one at stage IV. Both cricoarytenoid units were preserved in 12 patients, and only one in three. Each case was assessed through the clinical grading postoperative aspiration (CG

Theory of mind deficits in bipolar affective disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar affective disorder patients often show cognitive deficits that are similar to those found in schizophrenia patients. Theory of mind (the ability to understand others' mental states) is compromised in currently ill schizophrenia patients. This study aimed to establish whether similar deficits are found in bipolar patients. METHODS: We measured theory of mind ability in 20 bipolar-manic patients, 15 bipolar-depressed patients, 13 bipolar patients in remission and 15 normal controls. The task, which controlled for memory and comprehension, had previously been used in a study

Psychological aspects of chronic tonic and clonic stuttering: suggested therapeutic approaches.

A comparison of the personality profiles and intellectual functioning of 12 tonic and 18 clonic stutterers indicated that the groups could be discriminated on measures of verbal IQ, object relations, social isolation, somatization, and cognitive processing. Findings are examined in terms of the impact of type of functioning on maintenance of stuttering, and implications for treatment are discussed.

Fragile X syndrome: growth, development, and intellectual function.

We collected data on growth, psychomotor development, speech and language development, and intellectual function on a cohort of 100 males with the fragile X chromosome and 95 carrier females. The data include information on prenatal growth (33 males), growth during the preadult years (32 males), psychomotor development during the first 2 years (25 males), speech and language development (15 males and 5 females), and intellectual function (93 males, 33 females, and 10 obligate carriers who were cytogenetically normal). Birth measurements appeared normal when plotted on the Usher/McLean curves o

Audibility, speech perception and processing of temporal cues in ribbon synaptic disorders due to OTOF mutations.

Mutations in the OTOF gene encoding otoferlin result in a disrupted function of the ribbon synapses with impairment of the multivesicular glutamate release. Most affected subjects present with congenital hearing loss and abnormal auditory brainstem potentials associated with preserved cochlear hair cell activities (otoacoustic emissions, cochlear microphonics [CMs]). Transtympanic electrocochleography (ECochG) has recently been proposed for defining the details of potentials arising in both the cochlea and auditory nerve in this disorder, and with a view to shedding light on the pathophysiolog

Social attention in a virtual public speaking task in higher functioning children with autism.

Impairments in social attention play a major role in autism, but little is known about their role in development after preschool. In this study, a public speaking task was used to study social attention, its moderators, and its association with classroom learning in elementary and secondary students with higher functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD). Thirty-seven students with HFASD and 54 age- and intelligence quotient (IQ)-matched peers without symptoms of ASD were assessed in a virtual classroom public speaking paradigm. This paradigm assessed the ability to attend to nine avatar peer

Lexical knowledge and lexical use in autism.

One aspect of autistic language that has been infrequently researched is vocabulary and the conceptual knowledge underpinning individual words or word types. In this descriptive study we investigate anomalous vocabulary use in a 70,000-word corpus of conversational autistic language and examine evidence that concept formation, and hence vocabulary, is abnormal in autism. Particular attention is paid to the expression of artifact and temporal concepts which some believe may develop abnormally in autism. Little evidence is found of anomalous use of artifact terms, though errors with temporal (an

Central auditory processing disorder: a case study.

We carried out extensive audiologic, electrophysiologic, and neuropsychologic testing on a young woman who complained that she had difficulty hearing in her educational environment. Conventional audiometric results, including pure-tone, speech, and immittance audiometry, were all within normal limits. The subject performed normally on tests involving the processing of rapidly changing temporal information, interaural time and intensity difference detection, and both absolute and relative sound localization. Early, middle, late and task-related auditory evoked potentials were essentially normal

Examining the association between language, expository discourse and offending behaviour: an investigation of direction, strength and independence.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is reported in the population of Young Offenders (YO). However, little is known about the extent of the association between language and offending behaviour relative to social disadvantage, education attendance and non-verbal intelligence (IQ), and neither has this association been investigated with particular reference to the expository discourse abilities of YOs on community orders in the UK. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the direction and strength of the association between language and offending behaviour by compar

A window into the intoxicated mind? Speech as an index of psychoactive drug effects.

Abused drugs can profoundly alter mental states in ways that may motivate drug use. These effects are usually assessed with self-report, an approach that is vulnerable to biases. Analyzing speech during intoxication may present a more direct, objective measure, offering a unique 'window' into the mind. Here, we employed computational analyses of speech semantic and topological structure after ±3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; 'ecstasy') and methamphetamine in 13 ecstasy users. In 4 sessions, participants completed a 10-min speech task after MDMA (0.75 and 1.5 mg/kg), methamphetamine (2

Cocaine-related syndrome and palatal reconstruction: report of a series of cases.

Intranasal cocaine abuse may cause significant local ischaemic necrosis and destruction of the nasal and midfacial bones and soft tissue, leading to development of a cocaine-induced midline destructive lesion. Review of the English-language literature reveals only a few case reports describing hard and/or soft palatal perforation related to cocaine inhalation. To date, among the reconstructive techniques of the palate, different surgical options have been reported such as local, regional and free flaps. Common prosthetic obturators have also been used. Presented here are six cases of cocaine a

Classification of unilateral vocal fold paralysis by endoscopic digital high-speed recordings and inversion of a biomechanical model.

Hoarseness in unilateral vocal fold paralysis is mainly due to irregular vocal fold vibrations caused by asymmetries within the larynx physiology. By means of a digital high-speed camera vocal fold oscillations can be observed in real-time. It is possible to extract the irregular vocal fold oscillations from the high-speed recordings using appropriate image processing techniques. An inversion procedure is developed which adjusts the parameters of a biomechanical model of the vocal folds to reproduce the irregular vocal fold oscillations. Within the inversion procedure a first parameter approxi

Mandibular reconstruction using microvascular free flaps: a statistical analysis of 178 cases.

For this article, 178 consecutive cases of mandibular reconstruction using microvascular free flaps and performed from 1979 to 1997 were studied. The purpose of this report is to compare flap success rates, complications, and aesthetic and functional results. The ages of the 131 men and 47 women ranged from 13 to 85 years, with an average of 55 years. Donor sites included the rib (11 cases), radius (one case), ilium (36 cases), scapula (51 cases), fibula (34 cases), and soft-tissue flaps with implant (45 cases). Complications included total flap necrosis, partial flap necrosis, major fistula f
