[Immunologic and transplantation biology studies in patients with terminal renal failure].

Best possible tissue compatibility is a fundamental precondition for a successful organ transplantation. The desirable tissue compatibility is mainly defined by transplantation-antigens of the donor and the recipient and therefore--beside ABO antigens--the characteristics of HLA-system are the focal point of the preoperative immunological diagnosis. Based on the results of comperative examinations it is demonstrated, that HLA-antisera have such a widespread biological variability, that they lead sometimes to a faulty diagnosis which in turn causes the biological importance of the HLA-system to

Outcomes of pediatric ABO-incompatible kidney transplantations are equivalent to ABO-compatible controls.

BACKGROUND: Due to the profound shortage of suitable deceased allografts, much effort has been made to investigate whether successful kidney transplantation (KT) is possible across the ABO blood group barrier even for pediatric recipients. METHODS: We reviewed 52 consecutive ABO incompatible (ABOic) transplantation performed between September 1989 and March 2011. The mean age at transplantation was 10.6 ± 3.9 years (range, 4.4-19.7), with 35 boys and 17 girls. The donor-to-recipient ABO blood antigen incompatibility was as follows: A1/O (n = 17); B/O (n = 13); A1/B (n = 6); B/A1 (n = 1); A1B/

The effects of blood group types on the risk of COVID-19 infection and its clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND/AIM: COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease of 2019) is an infectious disease outbreak later on declared as a pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2). It spreads very rapidly and can result in severe acute respiratory failure. The clinical studies have shown that advanced age and chronic diseases increase the risk of infection. However, influence of the blood groups on COVID-19 infection and its outcome remains to be confirmed. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there exists a relationship between the blood groups of the patients and

ABO blood group should be considered and reported when red blood cell exchange transfusion is used to treat Plasmodiumfalciparum Malaria patients.

Laboratory and epidemiologic studies have clarified how persons born with malaria-resistant red blood cells (RBCs)-like group-O, sickle-trait, and C-trait RBCs-are protected against death or severe disease due to Plasmodiumfalciparum (Pf) infection. Compared to malaria-promoting RBCs-like non-O or hemoglobin-AA RBCs-inborn RBC protection against severe Pf malaria can be profound: up to 10-fold greater. Given that "the Berlin patient" success showed patients do not have to be born with disease-resistant cells to benefit from them, why have the biologically plausible benefits of exchange transfu

Ten Years of Kidney Paired Donation at Mayo Clinic: The Benefits of Incorporating ABO/HLA Compatible Pairs.

BACKGROUND: We examined the 10-year experience of Mayo Clinic's kidney paired donation (KPD).We aimed to determine the benefits for the recipients of enrolled ABO/HLA compatible pairs and determine the factors associated with prolonged KPD waiting time. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 332 kidney transplants facilitated by the Mayo 3-site KPD program from September 2007 to June 2018. RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) time from KPD entry to transplantation was 89 days (42-187 days). The factors independently associated with receiving a transplant >3 months after KPD entr

Risk factors for venous thromboembolism in women under combined oral contraceptive. The PILl Genetic RIsk Monitoring (PILGRIM) Study.

Identifying women at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major public health issue. The objective of this study was to identify environmental and genetic determinants of VTE risk in a large sample of women under combined oral contraceptives (COC). A total of 968 women who had had one event of VTE during COC use were compared to 874 women under COC but with no personal history of VTE. Clinical data were collected and a systematic thrombophilia screening was performed together with ABO blood group assessment. After adjusting for age, family history, and type and duration of COC use, main e

Predictors of the size of prosthetic aortic valve and in-hospital mortality in aortic valve replacement.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that gender, age, aortic root dimension, blood group and Left Ventricular End Diastolic and Systolic Diameters may have a significant correlation with the size of mechanical valve used. METHODS: We included 48 patients retrospectively who had been operated at a single tertiary hospital. All patients with aortic stenosis or regurgitation were included in the study. Patients who had undergone previous cardiac surgery or concomitant surgical procedures, such as coronary artery bypass grafting, were excluded from the study. RESULTS: The median size of the valves used in

ABO-incompatible living donor liver transplantation without graft local infusion and splenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Graft local infusion and splenectomy in ABO-incompatible (ABO-I) living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) are associated with high rates of operative complications. METHODS: Consecutive ABO-I LDLT patients treated at the National Cancer Centre between January 2012 and February 2013 were identified. The protocol for ABO-I LDLT at the study centre included the administration of rituximab (300 mg/m(2)) at 2 weeks preoperatively, followed by plasma exchanges (target isoagglutinin titre: ≤ 1:8), basiliximab (20 mg on the day of surgery and on postoperative day 4), and i.v. immunoglobu

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of renal transplantation in elderly recipients.

BACKGROUND: Elderly renal transplant candidates constitute one the fastest-growing populations among end-stage renal disease patients. Since the impacts of advanced recipient age have not yet been fully defined, we evaluated the clinical characteristics and outcomes of elderly renal transplant recipients. METHODS: Among 564 adult renal transplant recipients, at our center between 2000 and 2009, 64 were at least 60 years of age (Elderly group), and 500 were younger than 60 years (Young group) at the time of the procedure. We compared their clinical features and surgical management. RESULTS: T

Long-term recurrence-free survival after liver transplantation from an ABO-incompatible living donor for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma exceeding Milano criteria in a patient with hepatitis B virus cirrhosis: a case report.

The early results of liver transplantations (OLT) in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were poor because of frequent tumor recurrence. However, OLT has significant, theoretical advantage that it removes both the tumor and the organ that is at a risk of malignancy. The Japanese law on organ transplantation limited the availability of cadaveric liver donors until its revision on July 17, 2011. ABO-incompatible OLT was formerly contraindicated because performed anti-A/B antibodies on recipient endothelial cells raised the risk of antibody-mediated humoral graft rejection. We h

Eight years of outcomes of the Dutch Living Donor Kidney Exchange Program.

In January 2004, the Dutch transplant centers agreed on a protocol for a national Living Donor Kidney Exchange Program for ABO blood type incompatible and positive cross match donor-recipient pairs. Here, we report the results of that program. All transplants performed within the Living Donor Kidney Exchange Program between January 2004 and December 2011 were analysed. We collected demographic data of recipients and donors. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed, including recipient age, donor age, and reason for participation in the exchange program. We st

Salivary blood group antigens and microbial flora.

OBJECTIVE: Secretor is an individual with ability to produce blood group reactive substances in the exocrine glands and to secrete these substances in the body fluids such as saliva. In saliva the blood reactive antigens are found primarily on mucins which exhibit microheterogenicity and different subtypes of these molecules. This study was done to find out if the salivary blood group antigens have any role in the adherence of certain selected microorganism in the oral cavity. METHODS: Unstimulated whole saliva and sub gingival plaque samples were collected from subjects with clinically healt

The HUNT study identifies host genetic factors reproducibly associated with human gut microbiota composition.

The gut microbiota is associated with human health and disease. Here we conducted a genome-wide association study of host genetic factors influencing gut microbiota composition in 12,652 individuals from the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT), with replication in Nordic cohorts (n = 16,017-21,976). We identified 12 reproducible SNP-species associations across six genomic loci, including known (LCT, ABO) and novel (HLA-DQB1, MUC12, SLC37A2, FUT2) regions. Additionally, we detected genetic signals associated with gut microbiota functional modules at three loci (LCT, ABO, FUT2). Follow-up analyses sug

Genome-wide association study indicates two novel resistance loci for severe malaria.

Malaria causes approximately one million fatalities per year, mostly among African children. Although highlighted by the strong protective effect of the sickle-cell trait, the full impact of human genetics on resistance to the disease remains largely unexplored. Genome-wide association (GWA) studies are designed to unravel relevant genetic variants comprehensively; however, in malaria, as in other infectious diseases, these studies have been only partly successful. Here we identify two previously unknown loci associated with severe falciparum malaria in patients and controls from Ghana, West A
