Impact of Fronto-Orbital Advancement on Frontal Sinus Volume, Morphology, and Disease in Nonsyndromic Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Fronto-orbital advancement for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis has been thought to injure frontal sinus buds, lead to chronic sinus disease, and influence final forehead shape. This study investigates the effect of fronto-orbital advancement in infancy on subsequent frontal sinus volume, morphology, and disease. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis patients treated with fronto-orbital advancement in infancy with a head computed tomographic scan obtained at age 7 to 18 years. Facial trauma patients served as age-matched controls. Fron

Safety and Effectiveness of a Bioabsorbable Steroid-Releasing Implant for the Paranasal Sinus Ostia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Suboptimal outcomes of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) are often associated with restenosis and inflammation of frontal sinus ostia. Steroid-releasing sinus implants have been shown to maintain sinus patency by minimizing inflammation and scar tissue formation. An hourglass-shaped, bioabsorbable, steroid-releasing implant was developed to provide mechanical support and optimize drug delivery to paranasal sinus ostia. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of the hourglass-shaped, bioabsorbable, steroid-releasing sinus implant in improving postoperative outcomes when placed in

Malignant transformation of sinonasal inverted papilloma invading the external nose: A case report and literature review.

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SIP) is a benign neoplasm of the nasal cavity and sinuses, with a certain risk of malignant transformation. The malignant transformation of SIP is uncommon, and the invasion of malignant tumors into the facial skin is even rarer. This report describes the case of a male patient in his 20 s who underwent two endoscopic resections for SIP in the nasal cavity within a 6-year period. Histopathological analysis during the second surgery revealed the malignant transformation of the tumor into squamous cell carcinoma. Despite receiving conventional postoperative radiothe

Isolated intracranial Rosai-Dorfman disease mimicking meningioma in a child: a case report and review of the literature.

We report the first case of extensive involvement of isolated intracranial Rosai-Dorfman's disease (RDD) in a child. Our case is unique because it presents with involvement of the middle cranial fossa, cavernous sinus, pituitary gland, orbit, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Previous cases of intracranial RDD in children have reported separate involvement of cavernous sinus, suprasellar region, and frontal and petroclival regions. Involvement of the pituitary gland has so far not been reported. A 14-year-old male presented with a medical history of loss of vision, raised erythrocyte sedimentation

Wegener's granulomatosis with extension to the cavernous sinus.

BACKGROUND: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is an uncommon inflammatory disease which rarely is reported to invade the cavernous sinus. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of cavernous sinus syndrome in a patient with longstanding pansinusitis who was found to have Wegener's granulomatosis. PATIENT: A 59-year-old African American woman presented with a 10-day history of increasing nasal congestion with loss of taste and a 5-day history of increasing right frontal head pain with visual blurring of the right eye. On exam, she was noted to have diminished visual acuity, an afferent pupillary defect, and

[Recurrence of nasosinusal polyposis after ethmoidectomy by endonasal approach. Functional, endoscopic, x-ray tomographic aspects and surgical implications].

Recurrent polyposis after 116 endonasal ethmoidectomies performed in 61 patients were investigated on the basis of functional, endoscopic and tomodensitometric data. The results of the endoscopic examinations revealed that the anterior ethmoid was involved most often (41%) with either a single localization or in combination with other sites in the sinuses. Functional rhinosinus symptomatology was satisfactory in most cases after a mean follow-up of 22 months, especially for nasal obstruction which was initially predominant (91%). Headaches, especially fronto-orbial localizations, clearly decre

[Clinical and catamnestic studies after oto- and rhinobasal skull fractures].

The large number of craniocerebral injuries with fractured bones entails an essential field of diagnostic and therapeutic activities for the hospital-based otorhinolaryngologist. It is only with the active involvement of experienced clinicians that paranasal sinuses can be inspected, lesions of the dura mater closed and functional structures of the petrous bone restored. Over a twelve-year period, 311 injuries of the base of the skull were treated in the Magdeburg Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Clinical findings, complications and therapeutic methods used during acute treatment, as well as

[Growth stimulus of the paranasal sinuses with tissue expanders].

Various congenital craniofacial deformities show hypoplastic paranasal sinus. The Treacher Collins, the Apert and Crouzon Syndromes and the Hemicraniofacial Microsomy, among others, are typical examples of this observation. Stimuli to the growth of the paranasal sinus during the facial growth period could sensibly improve the treatment of deformity, or even avoid later surgeries. Since their introduction in plastic surgery, tissue expanders are progressively acquiring greater importance in many areas of the specialty. This is a safe and simple alternative to solve difficult cases. It has been

The "laid-back" aortogram: an improved angiographic view for demonstration of coronary arteries in transposition of the great arteries.

Preoperative demonstration of coronary arterial anatomy may be important for babies undergoing the arterial switch operation. Echocardiography is clearly useful, but may not unequivocally show all coronary branches. Standard angiographic views can be confusing. An improved angiographic projection in which the frontal x-ray tube is caudally angled, resulting in a "laid-back" position of the image intensifier and cine camera, provides superior visualization of the coronary arteries and their relation to the aorta and the pulmonary artery. The balloon occlusion technique is used for opacification

A description of the immature stages of Kirkioestrus minutus (Rodhain & Bequaert, 1915) (Diptera: Oestridae), and the life cycle and seasonal prevalence of this fly in blue wildebeest.

Descriptions of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar larvae and the puparium of Kirkioestrus minutus are gives. First instar larvae, which have not previously been described, can be distinguished from other oestrid larvae by the ventral spinulation of segments IV-XII and the spinulation of the anal protuberance. Of 55 blue wildebeest examined in the Kruger National Park all but two 1-month-old and one 2-month-old animals were infested. First stage larvae are probably deposited in or on the nostrils and may develop within 30 days, initially in the nasal passages and then in the frontal sinuses to mature

Adult intracranial pial arteriovenous fistulas: a case report and literature review.

Intracranial pial arteriovenous fistula (PAVF) is a rare high-flow cerebrovascular lesion defined by a direct shunt between pial/cortical arteries and a single draining vein or venous pouch without a nidus, adult cases are particularly uncommon. A 56-year-old woman presented with sudden severe headache after yoga. CT/MRI revealed a right frontal intracerebral hemorrhage associated with a giant venous pouch, and angiography demonstrated a single-channel PAVF fed by an MCA M2 branch with venous drainage to the superior sagittal and sphenoparietal sinuses. The patient underwent craniotomy for hem

Bilateral Ethmoidal Mucocele Causing Proptosis in a Child.

OBJECTIVES: Paranasal sinus mucocele is a benign cystic lesion, lined with respiratory epithelium and filled with mucoid secretions, which is generally seen in the ethmoid or frontal sinuses. Inflammation, trauma, fibrosis, neoplasm, and previous surgery play a role in etiology. Treatment of this condition requires marsupialization and drainage. Endoscopic surgery is the gold standard procedure. METHODS: A 2-year-old boy was referred to our clinic with a diagnosis of bilateral ethmoid mucocele causing proptosis in the right eye. General clinical examinations and routine blood analysis reveale

Occlusion of the Internal Carotid Artery due to Intracranial Fungal Infection.

In recent years the immunocompromised population has increased rapidly to include people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), drug abusers, and transplant patients. Accordingly, the incidence of intracranial fungal infection has increased. Our institution experienced 2 cases of internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion due to invasion of the cavernous sinus by an intracranial fungal infection. The first case was a 60-year-old man who presented with headache, eye pain, conjunctival injection, right-sided diplopia, and blurred vision. Infected tissues within the frontal and ethmoid sin

Surgical management of diffuse polypoid cystitis using submucosal resection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is characterised by recurrent infections of the upper respiratory airways (nose, bronchi, and frontal sinuses) and randomisation of left-right body asymmetry. To date, PCD is mainly described with autosomal recessive inheritance and mutations have been found in five genes: the dynein arm protein subunits DNAI1, DNAH5 and DNAH11, the kinase TXNDC3, and the X-linked retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator RPGR. METHODS: We screened 89 unrelated individuals with PCD for mutations in the coding and splice site regions of the gene DNAH5 by denaturing high

Digital volume tomography (DVT) as a diagnostic modality of the anterior skull base.

CONCLUSION: Because of high resolution and the relatively lower costs in comparison with modern helical CT scanners, digital volume tomography (DVT) can be recommended in the diagnosis of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. OBJECTIVES: DVT is an advancement of panoramic tomography and is based on the principles of rotational tomography. It enables high resolution visualization of osseous structures. The slices can be displayed in three orthogonal planes that can be changed in angle arbitrarily. Data volumes of up to 12×17 cm can be examined with a new generation of the DVT. The aim of thi

An extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type, with specific immunophenotypic and genotypic features.

Extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, 'nasal type,' is a rare clinicopathological entity in Europe. The main clinical features are nasal congestion, sore throat, dysphagia and epistaxis, due to a destructive mass involving the midline facial tissues. Pathologically, lymphoma cells exhibit angioinvasion, angiodestruction and coagulative necrosis. We report the case of a patient who presented with fever, dyspnea, nasal congestion, headache, distention of right nasal turbinates and exophytic lower leg ulcerating lesions. A CT scan of visceral scull demonstrated a filling mass of right frontal, ethmoidal
