OBJECTIVES: Monothermal caloric testing (MCT) shows potential as a screening method in vestibular assessment; however, the optimal stimulus modality and diagnostic threshold remain unclear. This study aimed to identify, within a single investigation, the most effective stimulus type (air or water; warm or cool) and the optimal cut-off threshold (15% or 25%) for maximising the diagnostic performance of MCT.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
STUDY SAMPLE: Bithermal caloric test (BCT) results from 202 adults (103 water, 99 air) were analysed. MCT results were assessed at 15% and 25% thresholds based

INTRODUCTION: Canal paresis of the horizontal semicircular canal in Ménière's disease is a frequent finding. Endolymphatic hydrops is the single most characteristic morphologic finding in Ménière's disease. However, the relationship between endolymphatic hydrops and canal paresis is still not elucidated.
METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging to visualize herniation of parts of the vestibular membranous labyrinth into the horizontal semicircular canal and correlated this morphologic feature with the caloric function of the horizontal semicircular canal.
RESULTS: Patients who showed hern

Niemann-Pick type C (NP-C) disease is a neurovisceral lysosomal storage disease characterized by neurologic dysfunction, hepatosplenomegaly, and early death. Natural history studies are very difficult to perform due to the low incidence and high heterogeneity of disease in the human population. Sixteen cats with a spontaneously occurring missense mutation in NPC1 were evaluated over time to define the progression of neurologic and hepatic disease. Affected cats had remarkably regular onsets of specific signs of cerebellar and vestibular system dysfunction with progressive severity of dysfuncti
