BACKGROUND: It is well recognized that genetic disease makes a significant contribution to childhood illness. Here, we present recent population data describing the impact of single gene and chromosomal disorders on hospital admissions of children and adolescents.
METHODS: Hospital admissions for patients aged 0-19 years between 2000 and 2006, with a single gene or chromosomal disorder, were extracted from the Western Australian Hospital Morbidity Data System using 296 diagnosis codes identified from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Australian Modifica

BACKGROUND: In 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) changed their guidelines for treatment of adolescents with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), no longer recommending hospitalization of all teenagers.
STUDY OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine the proportion of adolescents with PID who were admitted for failed outpatient treatment after the CDC guideline change. (2) To determine if adolescents admitted for PID after the guideline change needed longer hospital stays and/or were more likely to be "very ill" [as measured by inflammation markers, e.g. fever] or to have tubo-ovaria

In this retrospective analysis of inpatient charts, a total of 298 children and adolescents admitted to a public psychiatric hospital over a 1-year period were examined for the prevalence of reported histories of physical or sexual abuse. Physical abuse was reported in 15% of the cases, while sexual abuse occurred in 13%. A variety of comparisons were made examining possible differences in gender, age, race, diagnosis, and personality trait disturbance among the abused and nonabused patients. Relative to known prevalence rates as reported to child protective agencies, physical or sexual abuse

BACKGROUND: Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are at a substantial risk of harm to themselves and others, experience high levels of functional impairment and typically are high users of tertiary healthcare to address their mental health concerns. As indicators for BPD typically emerge in adolescence, a day therapy service in Bentley, Western Australia, Touchstone Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), was developed as an intensive intervention for adolescents with indicators for BPD and its associated symptomology. Touchstone utilizes mentalization-based thera

BACKGROUND: Adolescents hospitalized for firearm injuries are at high risk for developing behavioral health conditions, yet sex-based differences in these outcomes remain poorly understood.
METHODS: Using the 2016-2022 Nationwide Readmissions Database, we identified adolescents aged 10-18 hospitalized for firearm injuries and evaluated readmissions for new mental health and substance use disorders within the calendar year of injury. Multivariable logistic regression examined associations between sex and behavioral health outcomes.
RESULTS: Among 27,428 adolescents, females were more likely t

PURPOSE: With the increasing prevalence of bariatric surgery in adolescents, it remains unclear whether centers specializing in pediatric general surgery or adult bariatric surgery are better equipped to perform these procedures. This study aimed to compare outcomes following pediatric bariatric surgery based on surgical volume.
METHODS: Using the Nationwide Readmissions Database for 2016-2018, all patients aged 10-19 years undergoing bariatric surgery were identified. High-volume hospitals, defined as those in the highest quartile of procedures per year, were analyzed. Outcomes included conv

BACKGROUND: WHO considers mental disorders a significant disease burden among children and adolescents. However, there is a lack of population-based studies on the time trends of mental disorder diagnosis in this group.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in the incidence of clinical diagnoses of mental disorders among all Danish children and adolescents in the past 3 decades.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included all Danish-born individuals from 1976. Follow-up started in 1994 until first diagnosis of a mental disorder, 18th birthday, emigration from Denmark, death or end o

BACKGROUND: Optimizing treatment outcomes requires smooth sectoral transfer, which is especially true in child and adolescent psychiatry where timely outpatient follow-up is crucial. This study measured the time from hospital discharge to first outpatient contact (TDO) within the German healthcare system before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Anonymized data of ~ 700,000 publicly insured children and adolescents (age: 0.0–17.9 years) were retrieved from the InGef database (2018–2021). An exploratory analysis examined TDO among patients with documented outpatient contact following di

BACKGROUND: Adolescence represents a developmental period marked by heightened vulnerability to suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs), which remain a leading cause of death among youth, particularly psychiatric inpatients and after discharge. Contemporary ideation-to-action models conceptualize suicidal crises as dynamic processes driven by proximal psychological factors rather than static risk markers. While recent work has begun to examine these processes as they unfold in daily life, their integration into the clinical course of suicidal distress remains limited. From this perspective, rel

Recent literature gives different results on morbidity and mortality after COVID-19 hospitalization as compared to Influenza. In this registry-based study in Austria, we compared the short- and long-term outcomes after COVID-19 or Influenza hospitalization and associations with their baseline medication load. Data were provided on children and adolescents hospitalized with COVID-19 (sample size: 1061) in the years 2020 and 2021 or with Influenza in 2016-2021 (sample size: 2781) as well as on matched controls from the Austrian population (10,626 controls for COVID-19 and 27,634 for Influenza).

BACKGROUND: Santos et al. analyzed the clinical characteristics and pulmonary function of children with cystic fibrosis infected with SARS-CoV-2. Infected children showed higher rates of dyspnea, coughing, hospitalization, and pulmonary exacerbations. Despite a temporary decline in pulmonary function, the recovery rates matched those of the uninfected children during follow-up. ■ SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to mild-to-moderate disease in children with cystic fibrosis. ■ No worsening of cystic fibrosis was observed months after infection.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical man

Eating disorders encompass a spectrum of mental health conditions that are characterised by a preoccupation with eating, exercise, body weight or shape. The trajectory of eating disorders can result in hospitalisation for medical complications, such as electrolyte imbalance, extremely low weight and other medical issues that require urgent inpatient attention. Typically, care for adolescents with medically compromised eating disorders occurs in general medical settings, with most care provided by nurses who may or may not have the training and experience to provide quality care for this comple

Hospital admissions for eating disorders (ED) are rapidly increasing. Limited research exists evidencing the factors that lead to hospital admissions or their outcomes. The current study aimed to identify predictors of hospital admission in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) or atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN). Prospective observational study including participants (n = 205) aged 11-18 and diagnosed with AN or AAN at initial ED assessment, across eight London clinics. Physical health parameters at assessment, including heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and rate of weight loss, were co
