Usually, coccydynia cases are caused by herniated discs, with lower back pain and sciatica as initial symptoms. However, whether lumbar disc herniation causes coccydynia without back pain remains unclear. We report a case of lumbar disc herniation diagnosed as the underlying cause of coccydynia by discoblock. A woman in her mid-20s was treated for coccydynia experienced during sitting, for several years. There was no coccyx tenderness upon palpation. As the location of the pain could not be identified, it was not possible to perform a block at the site of the pain. Magnetic resonance imaging s…

When working with patients who have locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) the ability to undertake minimally invasive procedures becomes more challenging but no less important for patient outcomes. We performed a minimally invasive approach to surgery for LARC invading the posterior vagina and sacrum. The patient was a 75-year-old lady who presented with a locally advanced rectal tumour staged T4N2 with invasion into the posterior wall of the vagina and coccyx/distal sacrum. We introduce a robotic abdominoperineal resection, posterior vaginectomy and abdomino-lithotomy sacrectomy using a purel…

INTRODUCTION: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is the most common manifestation of extra-pulmonary TB. TB of the lumbosacral junction is rare and oc … an showed fluid collection in front of the sacrum, with a lytic destruction of the lower sacrum and coccyx. Cold abscess aspiration cytology was negative for acid-fast bacilli. However, real-time polymerase chain reaction was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. His symptoms resolved immediately after the initiation of anti-TB chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Several case reports in the literature brought to discussion the distinction criteria between fetus in fetu and teratoma.
CASE REPORT: The authors present a case report of a premature newborn boy, evaluated for a capsulated abdominal mass with prenatal diagnosis pointing to possible malignant lesion. A CT scan showed an expansive, retroperitoneal lesion, from kidneys to pelvis, sacrum and coccyx, with solid, cystic and fatty areas; the fine needle aspiration was inconclusive, and he underwent surgery on day 9 with partial resection of the lesion. A new procedure to complete the ex…

PURPOSE: To present the results of dextrose prolotherapy undertaken for chronic non-responding coccygodynia in 37 patients.
METHODS: 14 men and 23 women (mean age, 36 years) with chronic coccygodynia not responding to conservative treatment for more than 6 months were included. 27 of them had received local steroid injections. A visual analogue score (VAS) was recorded for all patients before and after injection of 8 ml of 25% dextrose and 2 ml of 2% lignocaine into the coccyx. In 8 patients with a VAS of more than 4 after the second injection, a third injection was given 4 weeks later.

OBJECTIVE: The sacral dorsal rami form the posterior sacrococcygeal plexus (PSCP), which has been scantly studied. This study's goal was to clarify the PSCP s detailed anatomy and discuss its clinical relevance.
METHODS: Ten sides of 5 fresh-frozen cadavers were dissected for this research. After the muscles covering the sacrum were removed, the PSCP was identified and traced under the operating microscope until the entire plexus was exposed. The contributions to this plexus and its relations to surrounding anatomic structures were recorded.
RESULTS: The PSCP was found on all sides and was c

This retrospective study documents deep gluteal tenodesis (DGT) used to stabilize coxo- femoral luxation (CFL) in dogs and cats, and to report reluxation rate and clinical outcome after DGT. Medical records (1995-2008) of 65 dogs and cats with traumatic CFL treated by capsulorrhaphy and DGT were reviewed. Animals with radiographic evidence of pre-existing hip dysplasia or articular fractures had been excluded. Reluxation rate and outcome were assessed by clinical examination, performed two and ten weeks postoperatively. Surgical treatment was performed between one and 20 days after the initiat

The aim is to evaluate the ease of access, surgical trauma and cosmetic results of posterior sagittal approach for sacrococygeal teratomas (SCTs). From January 2002 to June 2010, we operated 19 cases of SCT exclusively through posterior sagittal approach. Patients were placed in knee chest position. An elliptical incision was made for the excision of the tumor. Care was taken to preserve all the muscles and other vital tissue in this area. Coccygectomy was performed in all patients. Closure was performed in layers. It was possible to resect all tumors from this approach and none of the patient

Coccygodynia is a pathological condition associated with pain-discomfort all around the bottom end of the spine. The aetiology and the intensity of the symptoms may defer significantly. The effectiveness of the surgical treatment remains obscure. Our purpose, through this systematic review is to evaluate the results of surgical treatment of coccygectomy. Literature retrieval was performed by the use of the PubMed searching engine utilising the terms 'coccygodynia-coccygectomy' in the English language from January 1980 to January 2010. Case reports and tumour related case series were excluded a

A case report of a 16-year-old girl who presented to the emergency department with constipation and recurrent urinary tract infections is examined. She gave a history of persistent coccygeal pain stemming from a fall on a trampoline 1 year ago. On examination, she was found to have an abdominal mass arising from the pelvis and paraesthesia of S1-S5 dermatomes in the right leg. An abdominal radiograph showed bony erosion of the sacrum. Magnetic resonance scanning revealed a mass arising from the sacrum and subsequent biopsy diagnosed the tumour as Ewing's sarcoma.

Two cases of sacrococcygeal teratoma in female infants are reported. Case 1. A newborn baby with a hemispheric mass on her hip underwent surgery 3 days after birth and the lesion proved to be an immature teratoma. The serum AFP level was very high but became normal one month after the operation. The child also had agenesis of the corpus callosum and arachnoid cysts in right middle fossa. She died after developing shunt infection. Case 2. A newborn baby with a mature teratoma was operated on the day following birth. The tumor was subtotally removed, and there has been no recurrence after 6 mont

Spina bifida of the proximal coccygeal vertebral column with an associated meningocoele is described in a male, mixed breed, congenitally short-tailed cat. The meningocoele had opened onto the skin of the tail allowing periodic escape of cerebrospinal fluid. Other clinical signs exhibited by the animal were an abnormal hindquarter gait, paralysis of the tail and defective control of urination and defaecation.

Fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare congenital extragonadal germ cell tumor, which generally carries a favorable prognosis following complete surgical resection of the tumor and coccyx. However, cases of neonatal SCT resulting in mortality are relatively uncommon and often associated with diverse etiological factors. In this report, a female fetus was delivered via lower uterine segment cesarean section. A large mass measuring 13 × 11 × 8 cm was identified in the sacrococcygeal region. The mass exhibited incomplete capsular coverage and was accompanied by hemorrhage. Histopathologica…

BACKGROUD: Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a group of neoplasms usually arising in the gonads, and very rarely in sites outside the gonads, mainly in the retroperitoneum, the anterior mediastinum, and pineal gland or the coccyx (mainly in childhood). The prognosis of nonseminoma primary mediastinal GCTs (PMGCTs), is considered to be poorer compared to its retroperitoneal or gonadal counterparts and, according to the International Germ Cell Cancer Collaborative Group, it is considered by definition as a "poor risk" disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our review highlights the clinical features, prognos…
