Communication Strategies Within the Mental Health Context-The Evidence for Nurses, Midwives, and Social Workers. A Rapid Review.

Effective communication in mental health settings is central to compassionate, ethical, and person-centred care. For nurses, midwives, and social workers, communication underpins trust, assessment accuracy, and recovery-oriented practice. This rapid review explored evidence-based communication strategies used by these disciplines within adult mental health contexts. Following PRISMA-ScR and JBI methodology, 18 studies published between 2015 and 2025 were analysed. Study quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Assessment Tool. Three overarching themes emerged: professional mechanisms (refl

Community and health workers' perspectives on introducing HPV vaccination in a nonrollout district of Rajasthan, India: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination has not yet been introduced through the public health system in India. Understanding how communities and frontline providers perceive HPV vaccination before rollout is important for designing the introduction strategies. This study was aimed to explore community and health workers' perspectives on introducing HPV vaccination in a nonrollout district of Rajasthan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in Rajasthan, India, from March 2024 and June 2025. Data were collected through six focus group discussions with parents o

From motivation to governance: structural determinants of community health worker engagement in TB and HIV care in Madagascar.

Community health workers (CHWs) are essential to tuberculosis (TB) and HIV responses, yet many programmes rely on volunteer-based models that assume sustained motivation despite weak system support. CHW motivation is widely understood to be shaped by organizational and health-system conditions. We examine how structural and organizational conditions shape CHW motivation in TB and HIV care in Madagascar, drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which conceptualizes motivation as shaped by the fulfillment of needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence. We conducted a convergent mixed-meth…

Perceptions and Experiences of Uninsured Latinx Adult Participants in a Community Health Worker-Delivered Intervention to Address Depression.

Latinx immigrants have an increased risk of depression and other negative mental health problems. Community health workers (CHWs) have a history of bridging the divide between marginalized communities and health care systems. Since 2019, we have been implementing and evaluating a ten 1-hour-sessions intervention delivered by a CHW and adapted from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness exercises, and behavioral activation to treat mild to severe depressive symptoms and anxiety. There has been little research on the subjective experiences of the participants receiving mental health services …

Development and Effect of a Coordinated Community Health Worker Intervention Model for the Stroke Survivors in Kerala, South India.

INTRODUCTION: Structured models for secondary prevention of stroke in community settings are scarce. We aimed to develop and evaluate a model for improving medication adherence and enhanced risk factor monitoring. METHODS: We developed a multimodal coordinated community health worker (CHW) intervention (C-CHW-I) model for stroke survivors. Following training, all patients received a minimum of three CHW home visits, and once in 3-month telephone call and health education for 6 months by CHWs. Seven blocks from 16 blocks of the study area were randomised to additionally receive an SMS alert fo

Exploratory assessment: Nurse-led community health worker delivered HCV intervention for people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Getting and maintaining Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) cure is challenging among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) as a result of critical social determinants of health such as unstable housing, mental health disorders, and drug and alcohol use. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this exploratory pilot study was to compare a registered nurse/community health worker (RN/CHW)-led HCV intervention tailored for PEH, "I am HCV Free," with a clinic-based standard of care (cbSOC) for treating HCV. Efficacy was measured by sustained virological response at 12 weeks after stopping antivirals (SVR12)

Essential health services delivery in South Africa during COVID-19: Community and healthcare worker perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Between May 2020 and February 2022, South Africa's health system bore strain as it battled mitigating the coronavirus pandemic. The country's pandemic response was scrutinized. This period also brought into focus pre-existing shortcomings in the healthcare system and its governing bodies. Contextually, there is a paucity in literature on the experiences of healthcare providers and users. This study aimed to contribute information on COVID-19, with the intention of providing guidance on preparing for future infectious disease outbreaks. METHODS: Cross sectional exploratory qualitat

Control of Ebola virus disease outbreaks: Comparison of health care worker-targeted and community vaccination strategies.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCW) are at risk of infection during Ebola virus disease outbreaks and therefore may be targeted for vaccination before or during outbreaks. The effect of these strategies depends on the role of HCW in transmission which is understudied. METHODS: To evaluate the effect of HCW-targeted or community vaccination strategies, we used a transmission model to explore the relative contribution of HCW and the community to transmission. We calibrated the model to data from multiple Ebola outbreaks. We quantified the impact of ahead-of-time HCW-targeted strategies, and r

Creating Safe Spaces: A Community Health Worker-Academic Partnered Approach to Addressing Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a persistent public health problem in the United States, with an estimated one in three women experiencing rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner within her lifetime. Non-Hispanic Black women disproportionately experience IPV, but there has been limited success in implementing culturally appropriate prevention programs and services for members of this population. Community health workers (CHWs) are trusted members of under-resourced communities who provide reliable health information and improve the cultural appropriateness of service…

Community health worker interventions to promote psychosocial outcomes among people living with HIV-A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Community health worker (CHW) interventions are a successful strategy to promote health among HIV-negative and persons living with HIV (PLWH). Psychosocial factors are critical dimensions of HIV/AIDS care contributing to prognosis of the disease, yet it is unclear how CHW interventions improve psychosocial outcomes in PLWH. The purpose of this study was to critically appraise the types, scope, and nature of CHW interventions designed to address psychosocial outcomes in PLWH. METHODS: We performed database searches-PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane-to identify randomized control

Factors Associated With Community Health Worker Performance Differ by Task in a Multi-Tasked Setting in Rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Zimbabwe, like most low-income countries, faces health worker shortages. Community health workers (CHWs) bridge this gap by delivering essential health services and nutrition interventions to communities. However, as workloads increase, CHWs' ability to provide quality services may be compromised. We studied influences upon CHWs' performance related to pregnancy surveillance and nutrition and hygiene education in rural Zimbabwe. METHODS: In the context of a cluster-randomized trial conducted in 2 rural districts between November 2012 and March 2015, 342 government-employed CHWs id…

An ICT-enabled community oriented primary care intervention in mining communities during COVID-19 (2019-2022): perceived changes in the role and place of community health workers.

BACKGROUND: This is a study of service provider perceptions of the place, role and practices of CHWs in a four-year, large-scale private sector funded, public service ICT-enabled COPC intervention with rural and remote mining communities. Like all South African communities, apart from large mining house employees and some contractors, most people use available public healthcare services and private traditional as well as limited allopathic private sector providers. In addition to the limitations of facility centred primary healthcare and a fragmented health care system, the many negative healt

Positive psychological changes and associated factors among community health workers post-COVID-19 in China: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) played an important role in community-based COVID-19 prevention and control while maintaining routine primary care. The pandemic created a stressful work context for CHWs and may also have been followed by perceived positive psychological changes. Although positive psychological changes have been studied among hospital-based healthcare workers, less is known about such changes among CHWs in China. This study assessed self-reported positive psychological changes and associated factors among Chinese CHWs after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A mixed-m…
