[Counseling of parents with children with atopic dermatitis].

Parents who have a child suffering from atopic dermatitis usually have to deal with a lot of problems. They seldom find support in coping with this problem. If families are left alone with these difficulties for a long period of time, chronical problems have to be expected, that might disturb the relationship between the parents and their child. A counseling program for parents of children suffering from atopic dermatitis is presented which was developed to prevent distress and helplessness of the parents. The program involved the following topics: 1. Medical information 2. Coping with scratch

Infections as contributing factors to atopic dermatitis.

Certain cutaneous viral infections, such as Herpes simplex, vaccinia and varicella infections are known to occasionally run an usually severe course in AD. Patients with AD display increased frequencies of recurrent cold sores and Herpes zoster and they also have increased antibody titers to Epstein-Barr virus. Heavy colonization of the skin with staphylococci and streptococci is common. The findings of increased severity and/or frequencies of these infections in AD may be explained by dysfunctional cell-mediated immunity and by cutaneous changes associated with AD. There is suggestive, but no

On the significance of the trichophytin reactivity in atopic dermatitis.

Patients with pure atopic dermatitis with and without tinea infection were investigated and compared with patients with long-lasting tinea infections and with controls, for presence of intracutaneous reactivity to trichoptin, Penicillium, Cladosporium and Alternaria antigens. RAST to Penicillium and Cladosporium was also performed. The results showed a lack of delayed reactivity, but an immediate reactivity to trichophytin in 50%/40% of atopic patients with/without tinea infection. Non-atopics infected with tinea showed 66% immediate and 33% delayed response to trichophytin. The reactivities i

Is Food-Triggered Atopic Dermatitis a Form of Systemic Contact Dermatitis?

Food allergy in atopic dermatitis is mediated by complex immune interactions between genetics, diet, environment, and the microbiome. When contact between inflamed skin and food antigens occurs, contact hypersensitivity can develop. Consequently, systemic contact dermatitis (SCD) can occur after ingestion of allergenic foods or food additives in the setting of a Th2 response with CLA-positive T cells, triggering dermatitis where skin resident memory lymphocytes reside. This phenomenon explains food-triggered dermatitis. Atopy patch tests (APTs) detect sensitization to food proteins responsible

Long-lasting contact dermatitis in patients with atopic dermatitis or psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of contact dermatitis, a common inflammatory skin disorder, is often complex and multifactorial. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of patients with contact dermatitis who also have concomitant atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2011, adult patients with chronic contact dermatitis (six months or more), which also had concomitant atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, were recruited for a descriptive retrospective study in a tertiary care Spanish hospital. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used for the analysis of the collected data.

Abnormal skin irritancy in atopic dermatitis and in atopy without dermatitis.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Past observations have shown increased irritancy in patients with "conditioned hyperirritability" due to active dermatitis, including atopic dermatitis (AD). In less active atopic conditions, irritancy levels are less certain. We have utilized 48-hour Finn Chamber testing with graded dilutions of sodium lauryl sulfate to detect irritancy thresholds in well-defined groups of patients with AD, inactive AD, and allergic respiratory disease with no dermatitis and in normal nonatopic subjects. RESULTS: Significantly greater frequency of response to sodium lauryl sulfate in b

Prevalence of Atopic Dermatitis Criteria among Textile Workers with Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis and Effects of Having Atopic Dermatitis on Contact Antigenic Diversity.

OBJECTIVES: Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common skin disease. Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is the most frequently seen occupational skin disease and includes both occupational allergic CD (OACD) and occupational irritant CD (OICD). One of the most common sources of OACD is textile products. Individuals with atopic dermatitis (AD) have an increased risk for development of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). However, the role of AD in the etiopathogenesis of the development of OACD among textile industry workers is not well known. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevale

Vitamin D in atopic dermatitis, chronic urticaria and allergic contact dermatitis.

Vitamin D influences allergen-induced pathways in the innate and adaptive immune system, and its potential immunomodulatory role in allergic skin disorders has been explored. This comprehensive review article provides an overview of the role of vitamin D in three common dermatologic conditions: atopic dermatitis (AD), chronic urticaria, and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Whereas the literature regarding vitamin D and AD has resulted in mixed findings, several studies have described an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and AD severity, and improvement in AD with vitamin D supple

Pityrosporum ovale in healthy children, infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis.

The occurrence of Pityrosporum ovale was studied in healthy children, children with infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis (ISD) and in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Twenty children with ISD and twenty healthy infants were subjected to culture for P. ovale. Positive cultures were found in 18 of 20 infants with ISD, compared with 4 of 20 controls. The same culture medium containing olive oil as one of the lipids was used to evaluate the frequency of positive P. ovale cultures in 60 patients with AD, 40 patients with rhinoconjunctivitis and/or asthma (RA) and 40 children and young adults with

[Candida albicans sensitization in patients with atopic bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis].

Candida albicans, a component of normal human microflora, can induce synthesis of specific IgE-antibodies in patients with atopic bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis. The study included 25 patients with atopic dermatitis sensitized to C.albicans and 23 patients with atopic dermatitis non-sensitized to C.albicans. The sensitization was determined by the skin test and enzyme immunoassay. The patients had the history of atopic dermatitis exacerbation after taking food containing baking yeasts. Atopic dermatitis with sensitization to C.albicans is characterized by severe course correlating with

Adjunctive Management of Itch in Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can be difficult to treat due to a complex etiology and diverse clinical presentations. Itch is the most common symptom associated with AD with profound negative impact on quality of life. Thus, the adjunctive management of itch in patients with AD is needed to control and reduce disease burden. Supplemental treatment options are continuously emerging and undergoing testing in clinical trials. This article summarizes the latest data on topical and systemic adjunctive therapies for AD safety and efficacy in reducing itch.

Atopic dermatitis: treatment and innovations in immunotherapy.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease characterized by itching and skin barrier dysfunction. Moderate to severe AD is often refractory to first-line topical treatments, and systemic immunosuppressants have been shown to be effective but have significant adverse effects. The paucity of basic treatments has contributed to the development of targeted topical and systemic immunotherapies based on the use of small molecules and biologic drugs which can directly interact with AD pathogenetic pathways. They represent a new era of therapeutic innovation. Additional new treatment

Current and Emerging Biologics for Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic pruritic inflammatory skin disease that affects all ages and is recognized as a global health problem. Pathophysiology is complex with skin barrier abnormalities, immune dysregulation, and microbial dysbiosis all implicated. Markers of immune and inflammatory activation in the circulation provide a rationale for systemic therapy. Type 2 immune polarization is central, though other cytokine pathways including Th22 and Th17/IL-23 have been described, suggesting additional therapeutic targets in a subset of patients. Dupilumab and tralokinumab are monocl
