Stress in Greek mothers with deaf children. Effects of child characteristics, family resources and cognitive set.

In an effort to understand the impact of their children's deafness on Greek mothers, demographic, disability-related and stress characteristics were examined with 42 hearing mothers and their deaf children. The work was based on Hill's ABCX model and Bronfenbrenner's social ecology model, entailing a microsystem, mesosystem, ecosystem, and macrosystem. In addition to child history obtained from school records, Rotter's locus of control scale, Coopersmith's self-esteem inventory and the Clarke questionnaire on resources and stress were given to mothers. Onset of deafness before 18 months of age

Family environment profiles and mental health characteristics among Chinese middle school students: A latent profile analysis.

This study utilized latent profile analysis (LPA) to explore the heterogeneous profiles of family environments and their associations with mental health among Chinese middle school students. Using data from 2139 participants, we identified three distinct family environment profiles through LPA: Supportive (high cohesion, low conflict), Balanced (moderate cohesion and conflict), and Conflicted (low cohesion, high conflict). Significant mental health variations were observed across these profiles. Adolescents from Conflicted families reported the highest levels of depression, anxiety, stress, an

Alterations in gut microbiota characteristics along a type 2 diabetes risk gradient linked with family history.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major global health issue, with growing evidence linking it to gut microbiome changes. However, whether these alterations precede T2D onset and act as predictors, risk factors, or contributors remains unclear. This study analyzed the gut microbiota of 192 individuals from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort, divided into four groups: non-T2D adults with no (n = 47), one (n = 48), or two (n = 51) T2D-affected parents, and T2D-affected adults (n = 46). A progressive microbiota shift was observed in non-T2D groups based on parental history, converging toward the T2D profil

Characteristics of a Three-Generation Family with Stickler Syndrome Type I Carrying Two Different COL2A1 Mutations.

Stickler Syndrome is typically characterized by ophthalmic manifestations including vitreous degeneration and axial lengthening that predispose to retinal detachment. Systemic findings consist of micrognathia, cleft palate, sensorineural hearing loss, and joint abnormalities. COL2A1 mutations are the most common, however, there is a lack of genotype-phenotype correlations. Retrospective, single-center case series of a three-generation family. Clinical features, surgical requirements, systemic manifestations, and genetic evaluations were collected. Eight individuals clinically displayed Stickle

Actions of WNT family member 5A to regulate characteristics of development of the bovine preimplantation embryo†.

WNT signaling is important for regulation of embryonic development. The most abundant WNT gene expressed in the bovine endometrium during the preimplantation period is WNT5A. One objective was to determine whether WNT5A regulates competence of the bovine preimplantation embryo to become a blastocyst and alters the number of cells in the inner cell mass and trophectoderm. A second objective was to delineate features of the cell-signaling mechanisms involved in WNT5A actions. WNT5A caused a concentration-dependent increase in the proportion of embryos developing to the blastocyst stage and in th

Characteristics of Pediatric Patients With Celiac Disease Identified Due to an Affected First-Degree Family Member.

The incidence of celiac disease in first-degree relatives of affected individuals is higher than in the general population, yet the clinical characteristics of this unique subset of patients has not been well described. Through a retrospective review of patients seen in a tertiary care pediatric celiac disease clinic, we identified 49 patients diagnosed with celiac disease following screening due to an affected first-degree relative. Although 51% of patients screened due to an affected first-degree relative were asymptomatic, their disease histology was as severe as those screened for symptoms

Intergenerational Transmission of Rumination via Parenting Behaviors and Family Characteristics: The Impact on Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms.

The relationship between rumination and internalizing psychopathology across the lifespan is robustly documented, yet the development of rumination is not well understood. In a prospective study of adolescents (N = 629, M age = 13.05 years, 51.5% female, 48.3% African American/Black) and their primary female caregivers (90.6% biological mothers), self-report measures of rumination, parental behaviors, family characteristics, and internalizing symptoms were completed. Maternal rumination was not predictive of adolescent rumination, but was associated with less effective parenting and maladaptiv…

Clinical characteristics and genetic analyses in a Chinese family affected by primary aldosteronism: a case report.

The clinical and aetiological characteristics of family-clustered primary aldosteronism (PA) are not fully understood and need further exploration. Our study reported a PA case with a family history accompanied by unusual concomitant disease and explored the genetic background of the affected family members, thus providing more evidence of the manifestation and pathogenesis of family-clustered PA. We studied a family with PA in which the proband and her maternal aunt were diagnosed with aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) and primary adrenal hyperplasia (PAH), respectively. Apart from the diag

A New Comprehensive Colorectal Cancer Risk Prediction Model Incorporating Family History, Personal Characteristics, and Environmental Factors.

PURPOSE: Reducing colorectal cancer incidence and mortality through early detection would improve efficacy if targeted. We developed a colorectal cancer risk prediction model incorporating personal, family, genetic, and environmental risk factors to enhance prevention. METHODS: A familial risk profile (FRP) was calculated to summarize individuals' risk based on detailed cancer family history (FH), family structure, probabilities of mutation in major colorectal cancer susceptibility genes, and a polygenic component. We developed risk models, including individuals' FRP or binary colorectal canc

Association between prostate cancer characteristics and BRCA1/2-associated family cancer history in a Japanese cohort.

In addition to breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers, BRCA1/2 genes have been associated with prostate cancer (PC). However, the role of BRCA1/2-associated family cancer history (FCH) has remained unexplored in treating these four cancer types as a homogenous pathophysiological group. We aimed to clarify the relationship between BRCA1/2-associated FCH and PC, and to assess its relationship with cancer aggressiveness. Patient characteristics, positive family history of BRCA1/2-associated cancer, and cancer characteristics (Gleason score, prostate specific antigen level at diagnosis, and clini

Protein interactions with HER-family receptors can have different characteristics depending on the hosting cell line.

Cell lines are common model systems in the development of therapeutic proteins and in the research on cellular functions and dysfunctions. In this field, the protein interaction assay is a frequently used tool for assessing the adequacy of a protein for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In this study, we investigated the extent to which the interaction characteristics depend on the choice of cell line for HER-family receptors. The interaction characteristics of two therapeutic antibodies (trastuzumab and cetuximab) and one Affibody molecule (ZHER2:342), interacting with the intended recepto

Family history characteristics, tumor microsatellite instability and germline MSH2 and MLH1 mutations in hereditary colorectal cancer.

Recent characterization of the molecular genetic basis of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer provides an important opportunity for identification of individuals and their families with germline mutations in mismatch repair genes. Cancer family history criteria that accurately define hereditary colorectal cancer are necessary for cost-effective testing for germline mutations in mismatch repair genes. The present report describes the results of analysis of 33 colorectal cancer cases/families that satisfy our modified family history criteria (Mount Sinai criteria) for colorectal cancer. Fo
