Giant cell myositis (GCMm) and giant cell myocarditis (GCMc) are two rare autoimmune conditions. Among these, GCMc is a life-threatening disease with a 1-year mortality rate of 70%. Lethal ventricular arrhythmias, rapid evolution to heart failure and sudden death risk makes GCMc an emergency condition. It is thought to be mediated by T-cells and characterized by the presence of myofiber necrosis and giant cells in biopsies. Most commonly co-manifesting conditions with GCMm and/or GCMc are thymoma, myasthenia gravis and orbital myositis, all of which are treatable. As suspicion is the key appro…

Annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma (AEGCG) is a rare, often self-limiting chronic inflammatory disorder mostly occurring in the sun-exposed areas such as the dorsum of hands, extensor surfaces of arms, face, anterior neck, and upper chest. The pathognomonic histological findings include the presence of numerous granulomas associated with loss of elastic fibers that appear to be ingested by multi-nucleated giant cells. Here, we present a case of a 56-year-old woman with multiple, anatomically variable erythematous lesions- annular and papular, mainly in the upper body. The clinical presen…

Giant cell arteritis may lead to irreversible blindness due to an anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or central retinal artery occlusion. Diagnosis of the giant cell arteritis is sometimes a problem: Difficulties may arise since a negative biopsy can not rule out the diagnosis. This case report demonstrates acute changes in the temporal artery as demonstrated by Ultrasound Biomicroscopy and documents its course during therapy with corticosteroids.

GCA, the most common systemic arteritis, affects medium-sized and larger extradural arteries that have the internal elastic lamina. Involvement of the ophthalmic artery and its branches results in visual loss, which is often complete but is usually painless. Visual loss may be monocular or binocular developing simultaneously or sequentially. Rarely, it stems from occipital lobe infarct that result in homonymous hemianopia, a visual field defect involving the two identical halves (right or left) of the visual fields of both eyes. Visual hallucinations and diplopia are less common. All visual sy

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis of large vessels, manifesting mainly as temporal arteritis or large vessel vasculitis of the aorta and its branches. Glucocorticoid therapy is essential and so far had to be continued over a period of 1.5-2 years, resulting in relevant morbidity through adverse effects. With the approval of tocilizumab, an effective glucocorticoid sparing option is now available. In two randomized controlled trials, a profound reduction of cumulative glucocorticoid dose, prolonged relapse-free remission and reduced number of adverse events in the treatment groups h

Background and purpose - Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (t-GCTs) can behave aggressively locally and affect joint function and quality of life. The role of arthroplasty in the treatment of t-GCT is uncertain. We report the results of arthroplasty in t-GCT patients. Patients and methods - t-GCT patients (12 knee, 5 hip) received an arthroplasty between 1985 and 2015. Indication for arthroplasty, recurrences, complications, quality of life, and functional scores were evaluated after a mean follow-up time of 5.5 (0.2-15) years. Results - 2 patients had recurrent disease. 2 other patients had impl

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a medium-to-large vessel vasculitis with potentially sight- and life- threatening complications. Our understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of GCA has advanced rapidly in recent times. The validity of using the American College of Rheumatology guidelines for diagnosis of GCA in a clinical setting has been robustly challenged. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, an important marker of inflammation, is lowered by the use of statins and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Conversely, it may be falsely elevated with a low hematocrit. Despite the eme

The article describes clinical, including neurological manifestations, of giant cell arteritis (GCA) - granulomatous vasculitis of large and medium-sized vessels, predominantly craniofacial, including precerebral and cerebral, arteries. Histopathological features of GCA are illustrated by the schemes of panarteritis and «postarteritis» (proliferative and fibrotic changes in the intima, underlying the development of cerebrovascular disorders). The main clinical manifestations of GCA are described as 3 groups of symptoms: general constitutional symptoms; manifestations of vasculitis of craniofac

Peripheral giant cell granuloma is considered rare in the dog with little known about the clinicopathologic features. There are few reports in the veterinary literature concerning this benign, reactive lesion, formerly known as giant cell epulis. In humans, the four most commonly described reactive epulides are focal fibrous hyperplasia (fibrous epulis), pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, and peripheral giant cell granuloma. This case report describes the diagnosis and surgical management of a peripheral giant cell granuloma in a dog.

Giant-cell arteritis (GCA) involves the major branches of the aorta with predilection for the extracranial branches of the carotid artery. I … mporal artery biopsy, showing vasculitis with mononuclear cell inflammatory infiltrates, often with giant cells. Due to the focal and segmental nature of the infiltrates, areas of inflammation may be missed by the biopsy and the histological examination is normal in about 15% of the cases. Some imaging modalities may aid in the diagnosis of GCA. Among those, …

Giant cell fibroblastoma (GCF) is a rare soft tissue tumour that occurs almost exclusively in children younger than 10 years of age and is mostly located in the superficial soft tissues of the back and thighs. We present a rare case of GCF with encephalocele in a 1.5-year-old boy who presented with a swelling in the occipital area of the scalp since birth. CT scan suggested encephalocele without any suspicion of a mass lesion. On histopathology, an ill-defined proliferation of fibroblasts in a heavily collagenised and focally myxoid stroma was seen containing numerous multinucleated cells havi

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether GCA is associated with increased mortality.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study including all individuals who between 1993 and 2011 were registered in the Danish National Hospital Register and the Danish Pathology Register with a biopsy-proven diagnosis of GCA (n = 1787). Through the Danish Civil Registration System we identified a comparison cohort of 33 953 persons from the background population, individually matched on age and sex. Data on causes of death were obtained from the Danish Registry of Causes of

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a chronic vasculitis that typically presents with headache, fever and polymyalgia although atypical presentations are known. We present a case of GCA with nonproductive cough and pyrexia of unknown origin emphasizing this atypical nature of presentation. We report a rare association of GCA with granulomatous hepatitis. We also support the use of PET scanning in diagnosing and monitoring this condition.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common primary systemic vasculitis worldwide, although it seems to be very rare in some areas, such as Latin America.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to describe the clinical, laboratory, and treatment features in a Mexican Mestizo population with GCA.
METHODS: Retrospective data chart review (1989-2010).
RESULTS: Twenty-two patients with GCA were identified, 18 women and 4 men. Mean age was 73 (SD, 7.9) years. Diagnosis was made at a mean of 67 (SD, 83.6) days from symptom onset. Most frequent presenting symptoms included headac
