Serologic evidence of ehrlichiosis among humans and wild animals in The Netherlands.

The seroprevalence of antibodies directed against granulocytic and monocytic Ehrlichia was determined by use of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis agent and Ehrlichia chaffeensis as surrogate antigens. Seven hundred twenty-one serum samples were collected between 1992 and 1999 from febrile patients with unresolved aetiology (n=108), patients suspected of having Lyme disease (n=174), forestry workers (n=154) and healthy controls (n=54) as well as from wild deer (n=96), hares (n=60), wild boar (n=15) and red foxes (n=60). Reactive antibodies against granulocytic Ehrlichia were detected in 4% of feb…

[The circulation of the California encephalitis complex and Batai viruses in the Lake Baikal region (serological research data)].

The serological materials of the indigenous population and cattle suggest that there are viral foci of a complex of California encephalitis with the circulation of viruses of Inkoo, Tahyna [correction of Tyagin], and the white hare. The results of examining the residents of Irkutsk also suggest that there are urban viral foci of a complex of California encephalitis. The epidemiological potential of the natural foci of Batai virus is insignificant in the Baikal region.

The surveillance of plague among rodents and dogs in Western Iran.

BACKGROUND: The causative agent of plague, Yersinia pestis, is maintained in nature via a flea-rodent cycle. Western Iran is an old focus fo … serology, and real-time PCR methods. Additionally, sera samples were collected from carnivores and hares in this region, and the IgG antibody against the Y. pestis F1 antigen was assessed using an ELISA. RESULTS: In this study, 927 rodents were captured, with Meriones spp. (91.8%) and Microtus qazvinensis (2.6%) being the most prevalent. A total of 60 …

A serologic survey for some bacterial and viral zoonoses in game animals in the Czech Republic.

Between 1986 and 1991, sera were collected from 33 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 24 red deer (Cervus elaphus), four fallow deer (Dama dama), two mouflon (Ovis musimon), 34 wild boars (Sus scrofa), and 48 hares (Lepus europaeus) shot in two areas of the Czech Republic. Collectively, the sera contained antibodies to Coxiella burnetii (prevalence of 12%), Francisella tularensis (4%), Brucella spp. (2%), Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (8%), Tahyna (California serogroup) virus (36%), and Calovo (= Batai) virus (23%). We propose that these mammals may play a role in maintaining nat…

Nematicidal Potentiality of Four Marine Molluscans' Defensive Secretions From the Red Sea Against Syphacia obvelata (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) In Vitro.

The continuous requirement to substitute safe and affordable alternatives for helminth medications, as well as address the resistance of some used drug classes, introduced bioactive products derived from marine animals into the field of competition; however, almost all the previous research only focused on their impact on bacterial and protozoal infection. In the present work, we investigated the potential in vitro nematocidal effect of the aqueous extract of defense secretions for four species of marine mollusks: two cephalopods, namely the cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis and the common Octopus Oc

Torsion of the caudate lobe of the liver and concurrent necrohemorrhagic typhlocolitis in a zoo-housed Patagonian mara.

Liver lobe torsion has been reported in many species, with frequent reports in rabbits. Here we describe caudate liver lobe torsion and conc … nian maras have some anatomical similarities to rabbits and are highly cursorial, not dissimilar to hares, Lepus spp. We speculate that these characteristics may increase the likelihood of hepatic caudate lobe torsion in this species.

Tick-borne encephalitis transmission risk: its dependence on host population dynamics and climate effects.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a human disease caused by a flavivirus that is spread by ticks (Ixodes ricinus). In 2011 and 2012, the highest TBE incidence ever was recorded in Sweden. It has been proposed that warmer spring temperatures result in higher survival of ticks and thus high incidence of TBE. Here, analyses were done of time series of TBE for 1976-2011 in relation to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), mean summer temperatures, and yearly number of harvested European hare (Lepus europeaus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in the County of Stockholm, t

[Rabies epizootic situation in the Novosibirsk region in 1997 - 2003].

Starting from the end of 1997, a rise in the epizooty of rabies with peaks in 1998 and 2002 was noted. 550 cases of rabies were registered in wild and domestic animals, as well as one lethal case of rabies in man in 2001. Wild carnivorous animals are traditionally regarded as the reservoir and source of rabies virus (38%). In the Novosibirsk region this disease was registered in badgers, wild herbivorous animals, myomorph rodents, hares, marmots. Urban cases of rabies constituted 23%, cases of rabies among agricultural animals constituted 14% of all rabies cases in the Novosibirsk region.

Comparison of different PCR approaches for typing of Francisella tularensis strains.

In this study, we evaluated three PCR methods for epidemiological typing of Francisella tularensis: repetitive extragenic palindromic element PCR (REP-PCR), enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence PCR (ERIC-PCR), and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay with both M13 and T3-T7 primers. The analysis was performed with 40 strains of F. tularensis isolated from hares, humans, ticks, and a vole. On the basis of the combination of REP, ERIC, and RAPD fingerprints, F. tularensis strains were divided into 17 genetic groups (designated A to Q), and one Francisella novicida st…

Ectopic respiratory epithelium associated with multiple malformations.

We report a patient with unique cutaneous plaques of ectopic respiratory epithelium. The epithelium was located superficially as raised erythematous plaques on the right lateral surface of the neck with some viscous secretion. Underlying branchial cysts or sinuses were excluded. The occurrence of ectopic respiratory epithelium was associated with congenital deafness and a hare-lip in our patient, suggesting multiple malformation during early embryonic development.

Effect of C/Fe Molar Ratio on H2O2 and •OH Production during Oxygenation of Fe(II)-Humic Acid Coexisting Systems.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) production during oxygenation of reduced iron (Fe(II)) and natural organic matter (NOM) in the subsurface has been increasingly discovered, whereas the effect of the C/Fe molar ratio in Fe(II) and NOM coexisting systems remains poorly understood. In this study, aqueous Fe(II) and reduced humic acid (HAred) mixture at different C/Fe molar ratios (0-20) were oxygenated. Results show that both H2O2 and •OH accumulation increased almost linearly with the increase in the C/Fe ratio, with a more prominent increase in •OH accumulation at high C/Fe m

Isolated Cases of Plague - Inner Mongolia-Beijing, 2019.

What is already known about this topic? Plague is an acute infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis (Y . pestis) and is primarily transmitted by rodents. Human can be infected by bites of bacterium-bearing fleas or direct contact with diseased or dead plague-infected animals. In 2004, the last human plague case was reported in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region due to skinning a dead hare. What is added by this report? This is the first case of pneumonic plague imported into a major city since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Two primary pneumonic plague cases (Patients A and

[Ways to improve the epidemiological surveillance for plague].

The paper deals with the plague epidemiological surveillance in natural foci and with the ways of its improvement. The diversity of methods currently used for surveillance ensures a satisfactory epidemic situation though the problem of plague control among rodents and hares in the natural foci remained unsettled. Therefore the main task of research and practical plague institutions in improving plague epidemiological surveillance in the natural foci is to provide further research evidence for the application of facilities and guidelines to control the carriers and vectors of plague, which can …

Rickettsial antibodies and Rickettsia bellii detection in lagomorphs and their ectoparasites in Northern Baja California, Mexico.

Lagomorphs-principally rabbits and hares-have been implicated as hosts for vectors and reservoirs for pathogens associated with multiple rickettsial diseases. Western North America is home to diverse rickettsial pathogens which circulate among multiple wild and domestic hosts and tick and flea vectors. The purpose of this study was to assess lagomorphs and their ectoparasites in 2 locations in northern Baja California, Mexico, for exposure to and infection with rickettsial organisms. In total, 55 desert cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus audubonii) (Baird) and 2 black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus cal…

Predicting habitat suitability for Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus ticks in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are responsible for transmitting several notable pathogens worldwide. Finland lies in a zone where two human-biting tick species co-occur: Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus. Tick densities have increased in boreal regions worldwide during past decades, and tick-borne pathogens have been identified as one of the major threats to public health in the face of climate change. METHODS: We used species distribution modelling techniques to predict the distributions of I. ricinus and I. persulcatus, using aggregated historical data from 2014 to 2020 and new tick occurrence data

Comparing pelvic dimensions of precocial and altricial Leporidae species to explore the idea of human "secondary altriciality".

Human infants exhibit a unique combination of precocial and altricial traits, often described as "secondarily altricial," reflecting their high dependency at birth despite belonging to a typically precocial primate lineage. One hypothesis posits that this altriciality evolved to alleviate obstetric constraints caused by bipedal locomotion and large brain size. To test whether pelvic morphology corresponds to life history patterns, this study examines pelvic dimensions in two species within the Family Leporidae: one hare (precocial) and one rabbit (altricial), which share similar relative brain
