In the first clinical trial of its kind, the author used a pulsed holmium:YAG laser to perform endoscopic gallbladder removal in 10 patients. Compared to other endoscopic laser systems, the holmium:YAG produced relatively shallow tissue penetration. As a cutting instrument, it allowed faster dissection than other lasers. As a coagulating instrument, it provided such satisfactory hemostasis that no other hemostatic method was needed. This preliminary trial left no doubt that the holmium:YAG is a excellent laser for laparoscopic surgery, particularly removal of the gallbladder.

Prostate laser operation (PLO) is expensive; but without special fibres--that means f.i. NdYAG- or better Diode-laser--and simple reusable bare fibre it costs only about 20BEF/operation, 872 cases were operated in this way. The laser-tissue interaction is a complex phenomenon which is usually classified into 4 distinct mechanisms: electro-mechanical action, photoablative action, thermal action and photochemical action. Fragmentation of calculi by means of a pulsed dye laser is a good example of the electro-mechanical action. The thermal action can induce coagulation and/or volatilisation of tissues. Treatments of bladder tumors, urethral strictures and more recently benign prostatic hypertrophy are based on the laser terminal action.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Conventional (100 ms) pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) laser burns are larger than short-pulse (10 ms to 20 ms) PRP burns. This study investigates the effect of PRP burns of different sizes on retinal oxygenation.
METHOD: A mathematical model using COMSOL Multiphysics 6 was used to create a three-dimensional abstraction of the coupled biology of the choroid, photoreceptor, and retinal tissues. A rare presentation of an angiofibroma in the oral cavity is reported, which was treated with a diode laser. The benefits of laser treatment include bloodless procedure with instant precise coagulation of vessels. Although rare and unusual, it is suggested that angiofibroma should be included as one of the differential diagnoses of soft tissue swellings in the oral cavity.

The healing process of wounds made by a combination laser was studied in 90 rats. The laser system enabled both separate and combined use of CO2 and Nd:YAG laser irradiations. The laser wounds and the control excision wounds made by alligator forceps appeared on both sides of the tongue. Specimens from the wound sites were taken immediately, 6 h, and 1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 21, 28, and 42 days after surgery. BACKGROUND: Endoscopic laser coagulation of placental anastomoses is the first-line treatment for severe twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. A recent randomized controlled trial reported that laser coagulation along the entire vascular equator was associated with a similar dual survival and survival of at least 1 twin compared with the group that was treated with the selective technique. In addition, there was a significantly lower incidence of postoperative recurrence of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and the development of twin anemia-polycythemia sequence in the equatorial group.
