Between July 1, 1972 and June 30, 1977, 541 leukemic patients were admitted to the University Hospital in Edmonton. Eight of 11 patients who underwent emergency operation for complications of leukemia or antileukemic therapy died within 30 days of operation. Six cases are reviewed to illustrate the four basic types of gastrointestinal lesions and complications of leukemia: hemorrhagic and agranulocytic necrosis, leukemic infiltrates and fungal lesions. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric hematologic malignancy. The leukemic cells start in the bone marrow and spread to other vital organs and tissues, including the central nervous system (CNS). Neuroleukemiosis, leukemic infiltration of the peripheral nerves, is exceedingly rare. We report a child with neuroleukemiosis affecting multiple peripheral nerves, presenting 2 months after stem cell transplant for acute myeloid leukemia. We discuss this unusual entity and highlight the ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings that facilitated biopsy confirmation. Recognition of this entity is critical as it may be the sole sign of primary disease or relapse.

We study a mathematical model describing the dynamics of leukemic and normal cell populations (stem-like and differentiated) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). This model is a system of four delay differential equations incorporating three types of cell division. The competition between normal and leukemic stem cell populations for the common microenvironment is taken into consideration. The stability of one steady state is investigated. The results are discussed via their medical interpretation.

A 4-month-old infant was admitted with a monoblastic infiltration of the skin associated with osteosclerosis. Both lesions spontaneously disappeared within a few months, but 2 years later, a monoblastic leukemia occurred that was associated with marked skin erythema and myelofibrosis. Skin and bone marrow specimens showed a monoblastic infiltration with numerous intermingled mast cells of normal appearance. Whether myelofibrosis was a feature of a systemic mastocytosis or of the leukemic process is discussed in this case.
