Oral Health Implications of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Other Incretin-Based Therapies.

Incretin-based therapies have transformed the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Established agents-the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) semaglutide and liraglutide, and the dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide-are now widely used, while a diverse pipeline of multi-receptor agents is advancing through late-phase development. GLP-1 receptors are expressed in several oral and other craniofacial tissues, raising the question of how these drugs affect oral health. This narrative review (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Cl

Bidirectional association between oral diseases caused by plaque and the inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The bidirectional association between oral diseases caused by plaque and the inflammatory bowel disease remains unclear. Here, we comprehensively searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to August 2024 to identify relevant studies. The relative risk (RR) from periodontal disease studies and the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index from caries-related studies was pooled, and calculating 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and cumulative meta-analysis were employed to evaluate the robustness of the findings.

Oral findings in children with congenital cholestatic disease: A systematic review of case reports and case series.

Multiple causes of congenital neonatal cholestasis have been identified, and are classified as extrahepatic or intrahepatic. Biliary atresia (BA), Alagille syndrome (AGS), and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) are the most common of these. Many factors associated with cholestatic diseases are known to degrade the oral health of these children. What are the oral manifestations associated with these diseases in the pediatric population? The aim of this article was to evaluate the impact of congenital cholestasis on oral health in pediatric patients. A systematic review of case

Success of surgical interventions for direct dental implant-related injuries to the mandibular nerve: a review.

To the best of our knowledge there are no guidelines regarding the surgical management of dental implant-related injuries to the mandibular nerve. This review aims to investigate the success of different surgical interventions. Neurosensory injury to the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve can occur during administration of local anaesthetic, elevation of the flap, preparation for osteotomy, and placement of the implant. Surgical interventions include extraction of the implant, external decompression, internal neurolysis, excision of a neuroma, neurorrhaphy, nerve grafting, and low-level

Interventions for treating traumatised ankylosed permanent front teeth.

BACKGROUND: Teeth that have suffered trauma can fuse to the surrounding bone - the process referred to as dental ankylosis. Ankylosed permanent front teeth fail to erupt during facial growth and can become displaced, thus resulting in functional and aesthetic problems. Dental ankylosis is also associated with root resorption, which eventually leads to the loss of affected teeth. Different interventions for the management of ankylosed permanent front teeth have been described but it is unclear which are the most effective. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of treatment options for ankylosed pe

Prevalence of Oral Diseases and Assessment of Quality of Life in Geriatric patients with and without comorbidities - A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in the ageing population has increased the burden of chronic oral diseases among older adults, particularly in regions with limited geriatric-focused healthcare resources. Age-related physiological decline, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy collectively heightened susceptibility to dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss, xerostomia, and prosthetic complications. Despite this growing concern, evidence on how comorbidities influence oral health and quality of life among geriatric individuals remained fragmented. AIM: This systematic review aimed to determine t
