Mesothelioma and other lung disease in taconite miners; the uncertain role of non-asbestiform EMP.

The purpose of this paper was to assess the role of non-asbestiform amphibole EMPs in the etiology of mesotheliomas and other lung disease in taconite (iron ore) miners. Increased mesothelioma rates have been described in Minnesota taconite workers since the late 1990s. Currently, over 100 cases have been reported by the Minnesota Department of Health within the complete cohort of miners in Minnesota. Geologic sampling has indicated that only the eastern part of the iron range contains non-asbestiform amphibole elongate mineral particles (EMPs), in close proximity to the ore. This type of EMP …

Mercury exposure among artisanal gold miners in Madre de Dios, Peru: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to mercury, a toxic metal, occurs primarily from inhaling mercury vapors or consuming methylmercury-contaminated fish. One third of all anthropogenic mercury emissions worldwide are from artisanal gold mining, which uses mercury to extract gold. Although recent reports suggest that the Madre de Dios region in Peru (with >30,000 artisanal miners) has extensive mercury contamination, residents had never been assessed for mercury exposure. Thus, our objective was to quantify mercury exposure among residents of an artisanal mining town in Madre de Dios and to assess risk fac…

Coronary heart disease mortality and radon exposure in the Newfoundland fluorspar miners' cohort, 1950-2001.

Kreuzer and coworkers recently reported no association between cumulative exposure to radiation and death from cardiovascular disease in a cohort of German uranium miners. Here, we report on the relationship between cumulative exposure to radon progeny and coronary heart disease among Newfoundland fluorspar miners. Previous analyses in this cohort found elevated death rates from coronary heart disease among those with higher cumulative radon exposure. However, this finding was based on a relatively small number of deaths and was not statistically significant. Since then, the follow-up of this …

Sexually transmitted disease/HIV and heterosexual risk among miners in townships of Yunnan Province, China.

The HIV epidemics in some areas of Yunnan Province, southwestern China, are close to becoming generalized, demanding the need for a better understanding of sexually transmitted disease (STD) and heterosexual HIV risk. While female heterosexual risk is captured by sentinel surveillance, less is known about clients of commercial sex workers and other subsets of men at increased risk of STD/HIV. A convenience sample of 232 miners in townships of Yunnan Province completed a questionnaire and provided specimens for STD/HIV testing. Relative prevalences of HIV, gonorrhea, and chlamydia among sexuall…

PER1-related inflammatory signaling links night shift exposure to lower lung function in coal miners.

Cumulative night-shift exposure may disrupt circadian homeostasis and adversely relate to respiratory health. In a cross-sectional analysis of 9,464 coal miners, we found that greater cumulative night-shift exposure was associated with lower lung function after accounting for cumulative respirable dust exposure. Mendelian randomization analyses supported a potential causal link between shift work and reduced lung function and further indicated that genetically predicted lower lung function was associated with higher chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk. In a coal miner subgroup, l…

Racial Differences in Respiratory Impairment, Pneumoconiosis, and Federal Compensation for Western U.S. Indigenous Coal Miners.

Rationale: Indigenous populations in the United States face numerous health disparities, but the health of Indigenous workers is less well understood. In a recent surveillance study of active Indigenous coal miners, 3% had coal workers' pneumoconiosis/black lung, and 9% had respiratory impairment. However, occupational lung disease prevalence among Indigenous coal miners has not been directly compared with that among other race/ethnicity groups. Coal miners who are totally disabled from black lung may qualify for U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) compensation benefits, but it is unclear how curre…

The Effects of Pleural Plaques on Longitudinal Lung Function in Vermiculite Miners of Libby, Montana.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to assess associations of pleural plaques (PP) and longitudinal lung function in vermiculite miners of Libby, Montana who are occupationally exposed to asbestos. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was used to identify asbestos-related findings in former Libby vermiculite miners. We investigated annual lung function decline in miners with PP only and compared them to miners with normal HRCT findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HRCTs from 128 miners were categorized into the following 4 diagnostic groups: (1) normal computed tomography scan (n = 9); (2) …

The influence of radon exposures on lung cancer mortality in German uranium miners, 1946-2003.

Extensive uranium extraction took place from 1946 until 1990 at the former Wismut mining company in East Germany. A total of 58,987 male former employees of this company form the largest single uranium miners cohort that has been followed up for causes of mortality occurring from the beginning of 1946 to the end of 2003. The purpose of this study was to investigate and evaluate different forms of models for the radon exposure-related lung cancer mortality risk based on 3,016 lung cancer deaths and 2 million person years. Other exposure covariables such as occupational exposure to external gamm…

The Diesel Exhaust in Miners Study: II. Exposure monitoring surveys and development of exposure groups.

Air monitoring surveys were conducted between 1998 and 2001 at seven non-metal mining facilities to assess exposure to respirable elemental carbon (REC), a component of diesel exhaust (DE), for an epidemiologic study of miners exposed to DE. Personal exposure measurements were taken on workers in a cross-section of jobs located underground and on the surface. Air samples taken to measure REC were also analyzed for respirable organic carbon (ROC). Concurrent measurements to assess exposure to nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), two gaseous components of DE, were also taken. The REC me…

Respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function in coal miners: looking into the effects of simple pneumoconiosis.

BACKGROUND: Although severe impairment of pulmonary function is believed to occur commonly in complicated pneumoconiosis, the relationships of simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) to pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms have remained under debate. The study aims to investigate if simple pneumoconiosis is associated with significant impairment of pulmonary function and increased risk of respiratory symptoms. METHODS: Spirometry and diffusing capacity were performed in 205 miners with simple CWP and 289 without X ray evidence of pneumoconiosis, who were selected from a large undergr…

Predicted number of lung cancer cases in Germany among former uranium miners of the Wismut.

Between 1946-1990, the Wismut-Company in the former German Democratic Republic was the leading producer of uranium for the Soviet union. After the German reunification, a central welfare system for uranium miners of the Wismut Zentrale Betreuung Wismut (ZeBWiS) was initiated by the Hauptverband der Berufsgenossenschaften in 1992, and a data base of exposed employees was established. In spring 1993, data regarding 95,000 exposed persons were available from Saxony, but none from Thuringia. A sample of 3,654 persons was drawn. For 3,128 of them the working history at the Wismut could be reconstru…

A battle for compensation for Welsh coal miners: JS Haldane v "Sericite" Jones, 1932-1934.

Toward the end of the 1920s, technical advances in mining led to an increase in airborne burdens of dust in the South Wales coal mines. This coincided with a dramatic increase in the incidence of disability and death from respiratory disease among the miners. For their condition to be compensable, claimants were required to have worked with rock containing more than 50% 'free silica.' Dr W.R. Jones, a mining geologist, was asked to help obtain compensation for those claimants who could not satisfy the 'free silica' condition. He was unable to identify high-silica rocks where none had been said…
