Generative neural samplers for the quantum Heisenberg chain.

Generative neural samplers offer a complementary approach to Monte Carlo methods for problems in statistical physics and quantum field theory. This paper tests the ability of generative neural samplers to estimate observables for real-world low-dimensional spin systems. It maps out how autoregressive models can sample configurations of a quantum Heisenberg chain via a classical approximation based on the Suzuki-Trotter transformation. We present results for energy, specific heat, and susceptibility for the isotropic XXX and the anisotropic XY chain are in good agreement with Monte Carlo result…

Analysis of PBPK models for risk characterization.

Adoption of a Bayesian framework for risk characterization permits the seamless integration of different kinds of information available in order to choose and parameterize risk models. It also becomes easy to disentangle uncertainty from variability, through hierarchical statistical modeling. Appropriate numerical techniques can be found, for example, in the recently developed arsenal of Markov chain, Monte Carlo simulations. The developments in this area can actually be viewed as extensions of the traditional or standard Monte Carlo methods for uncertainty analysis. Following a brief review o…

Radiation doses in volume-of-interest breast computed tomography--A Monte Carlo simulation study.

PURPOSE: Cone beam breast computed tomography (breast CT) with true three-dimensional, nearly isotropic spatial resolution has been developed and investigated over the past decade to overcome the problem of lesions overlapping with breast anatomical structures on two-dimensional mammographic images. However, the ability of breast CT to detect small objects, such as tissue structure edges and small calcifications, is limited. To resolve this problem, the authors proposed and developed a volume-of-interest (VOI) breast CT technique to image a small VOI using a higher radiation dose to improve th

Rapid estimation of patient-specific organ doses using a deep learning network.

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific organ-dose estimation in diagnostic CT examinations can provide useful insights on individualized secondary cancer risks, protocol optimization, and patient management. Current dose estimation techniques mainly rely on time-consuming Monte Carlo methods or/and generalized anthropomorphic phantoms. PURPOSE: We proposed a proof-of-concept rapid workflow based on deep learning networks to estimate organ doses for individuals following thorax Computed Tomography (CT) examinations. METHODS: CT scan data from 95 individuals undergoing thorax CT examinations were used. …

Efficient sensitivity/uncertainty analysis using the combined stochastic response surface method and automated differentiation: application to environmental and biological systems.

Estimation of uncertainties associated with model predictions is an important component of the application of environmental and biological models. "Traditional" methods for propagating uncertainty, such as standard Monte Carlo and Latin Hypercube Sampling, however, often require performing a prohibitive number of model simulations, especially for complex, computationally intensive models. Here, a computationally efficient method for uncertainty propagation, the Stochastic Response Surface Method (SRSM) is coupled with another method, the Automatic Differentiation of FORTRAN (ADIFOR). The SRSM

Joint propagation of variability and imprecision in assessing the risk of groundwater contamination.

Estimating risks of groundwater contamination often require schemes for representing and propagating uncertainties relative to model input parameters. The most popular method is the Monte Carlo method whereby cumulative probability distributions are randomly sampled in an iterative fashion. The shortcoming of the approach, however, arises when probability distributions are arbitrarily selected in situations where available information is incomplete or imprecise. In such situations, alternative modes of information representation can be used, for example the nested intervals known as "possibili…

Machine learning model for fast prediction and uncertainty quantification of needle deflection during prostate biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Accurate needle placement is essential for prostate biopsy. Recently, transperineal prostate biopsies are receiving renewed interest due to concern over infection from conventional transrectal biopsies. However, accurate needle placement is more challenging in the transperineal approach than in the transrectal approach due to the long insertion distance leading to a large targeting error and repeated insertion attempts. Improved procedure planning tools that can predict the deviation of the needle can potentially reduce the targeting error and number of insertion attempts. Predicti

Bayesian Causal Methods for Environmental Accountability Studies with Heterogeneous Effects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Environmental accountability studies evaluate whether regulatory interventions achieve their intended benefits. These studies fall into two broad categories: indirect accountability, which estimates the effects of exposure to higher levels of air pollution and uses them to indirectly predict policy impacts, and direct accountability, which evaluates specific interventions directly. The purpose of this review is to evaluate recent advances in causal inference and flexible Bayesian statistical modeling to support environmental accountability studies. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent s

Machine-learning-based source localization for an intraoperative forceps-type positron emission counter.

Objective.Intraoperative identification of metastatic lymph nodes in esophageal cancer surgery could enable more selective lymph-node dissection. A forceps-type positron emission counter (PEC)-a compact coincidence detector designed to intraoperatively quantifyF-FDG uptake in individual lymph nodes through standard laparoscopic trocars-requires the radioactive source to be centered within its field of view for accurate quantification, yet current hardware provides no positional feedback.Approach.A position-sensitive detector was designed by segmenting the conventional monolithic scintillator i

Cherenkov light-based dosimetry for molecular radiation therapy of thyroid cancer: an in-silico study.

Objective. There is a need for patient-specific dose quantification (dosimetry) in molecular radiation therapy (MRT). Cherenkov light generated in the tissue by charged particles produced by the radioactive decay of radiopharmaceuticals offers an unprecedented opportunity for MRT dosimetry. While the intensity of the emitted Cherenkov light is proportional to the dose, the intensity of light emerging and measured at the patient surface depends on patient anatomy and tissue optical characteristics. This results in an inter-patient variability of the linear relationship between Cherenkov light in

Evaluation of a simple graphite calorimeter for ultra-high dose-rate electron beam dosimetry.

Objective. This study evaluates the performance of a simple secondary-standard graphite calorimeter (SSCal) for absorbed-dose measurements in ultra-high dose-rate (UHDR) electron beams, motivated by the need for reliable, traceable dosimetry for FLASH radiotherapy.Approach. The SSCal was calibrated against the primary absorbed-dose standard at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and characterised in conventional 6-10 MeV electron beams. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used to derive detector-specific perturbation and field-size correction factors, including conversion from absorbed dose to

Practical screening and monitoring tools for out-of-specification risk in biological products under finite sample sizes.

Evaluating the risk of out-of-specification (OOS) occurrence before it happens is essential to prevent delays or interruptions in the supply of biological products. This study proposes a practical and quantitative evaluation approach using two indices, S1 and S2, as OOS risk screening and monitoring tools under finite-sample conditions. S1 evaluates whether the variability of data points in a dataset satisfies a low OOS risk criterion, defined as an acceptable level of inherent variability. S2 evaluates whether the observed data range remains within the specification limits with a range-propor

A Dual-Mode Near-Infrared Optical Probe and Monte Carlo Framework for Functional Monitoring of Rheumatoid Arthritis: Addressing Diagnostic Ambiguity and Skin Tone Robustness.

Current diagnostic modalities for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US), excel at visualizing structural pathology but are either resource-intensive or often limited to morphological assessment. In this work, we present the design and technical validation of a low-cost continuous-wave near-infrared (NIR) dual-mode optical probe for functional monitoring of joint inflammation. Unlike superficial imaging, NIR light penetrates approximately 3-5 cm and is tissue and wavelength dependent, enabling trans-illumination of the synovial volume. The syste

Aggregate data modelling: A fast implementation for fitting pharmacometrics models to summary-level data in R.

Pharmacometric modelling is traditionally performed using individual level data. Recently a new method was developed to fit pharmacometric models to summary level - or aggregate - data. This methodology allows for jointly modelling different data sources, once transformed into aggregate data. As such, the method can be applied to a combination of individual data, pharmacometric models, and aggregate data. In this study we aimed to (1) implement this methodological framework into an accessible R package (admr) and (2) develop a novel algorithm with enhanced computational efficiency. The develop

Development of an omnidirectional rotating Compton camera for imaging 177Lu radioactive contamination.

In this study, we developed an omnidirectional rotating Compton camera that was capable of imaging low-level radioactive contamination caused by 177Lu-oxodotreotide, a novel radiopharmaceutical that has recently been attracting attention in nuclear medicine. The detector employs a compact design that comprises only six scintillator crystals mounted on a motorized rotating stage. By optimizing the crystal type and size, and optimizing the interval between crystals, the detector is able to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions, including observable gamma-ray energies, dose rates, and

Wide-Based Illumination and Detection in Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Enhanced Seizure Detection in Grey Matter.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive method for monitoring brain activity by detecting hemodynamic changes. Studies have shown that it can identify ictal and pre-ictal hemodynamic variations, supporting its potential use as a complement to electroencephalography (EEG) in epilepsy monitoring. This study explores an expanded illumination and detection approach utilizing wide-based optodes and increased emitter-detector separation (EDS) to enhance fNIRS sensitivity to cortical hemodynamic changes while minimizing scalp contamination. A Monte Carlo simulation was designe

BrachyPlan: A fine-grained efficient dose-guided inverse planning strategy for low-dose-rate brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy delivers highly conformal doses for malignancies ranging from pancreatic to head-and-neck cancers, yet today's treatment-planning systems still depend on extensive manual manipulation and dose engines of uncertain accuracy. We introduce BrachyPlan, an end-to-end pre-operative framework that automates low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy planning while preserving clinical precision. The system combines: 1) a real-time Monte Carlo dose engine that produces high-fidelity, heterogeneity-aware dose maps, and 2) a dose-guided inverse-planning algorithm that optimally places seeds to meet
