A rare case of urachal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) of the urachus is a rare neoplastic condition characterized by proliferation of spindle cell, likely derived from myofibroblasts or fibroblasts, with acute and chronic inflammatory infiltrate. Urachal IMT present with abdominal/pelvic pain and urinary symptoms. These often manifest as abdominal mass involving adjacent structures. We describe a case of young female with urachal IMT that was excised with a wide margin to ensure complete removal of all adjacent affected tissue using robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach. Immunohistochemical evidence of A…

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of ileum with intussusception in adult.

A 62-year-old man was referred to our department with suspected intussusception due to an ileal tumor. Tumor markers including soluble interleukin-2 receptor were not elevated. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and color Doppler ultrasonography showed a distinct ileal tumor without intratumoral blood flow or surrounding lymphadenopathies. Retrograde single-balloon enteroscopy revealed a submucosal tumor in the ileum that was hard and ulcerated. Partial intestinal resection was performed, and the lesion was diagnosed as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. The patient had no recurrence ov

Laser Treatment of a Tracheal Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the trachea are rare childhood quasi-neoplastic lesions. CASE CHARACTERISTICS: 7-year-old boy with recurrent episodes of cough, breathing difficulty and wheeze, initially treated as asthma. INTERVENTION: CT chest and flexible bronchoscopy revealed a mass lesion of the trachea, which was excised by diode laser through the ventilating bronchoscope. Histopathology confirmed it as the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. MESSAGE: Use of laser ensured complete endotracheal excision of the tumor.

PD-L1 expression in inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare mesenchymal tumor occurring at many anatomic sites, with a predilection for children and young adults. Often indolent, they can be locally aggressive and can metastasize, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Therapeutic options are often limited. The identification of underlying kinase mutations has allowed the use of targeted therapy in a subset of patients. Unfortunately, not all tumors harbor mutations and resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy is a potential problem. We hypothesized that these tumors may be amenable to PD-L

An isolated inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of adrenal gland.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon lesion that shows a wide range of anatomic distribution. The adrenal gland, however, is a distinctly rare site of occurrence. To date, only a few cases of IMT arising in the adrenal gland have been reported in the English literature. Here, we report another case of isolated adrenal IMT. A 34-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a complaint of a sudden severe right-sided back pain. Subsequent computed tomographic scan imaging studies demonstrated a large right adrenal mass associated with a hematoma. The right adrenal gl

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Larynx:A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumors are initially described in the lung and various extrapulmonary sites such as the orbits, palatine tonsils, ears, gingiva, pterygomaxillary space, and periodontal tissues. These tumors rarely involve the larynx and predilection to the glottis occurs in an indolent manner. CASE REPORT: This case describes a laryngeal myofibroblastic tumor in a 46-year-old woman who presented with an aggressive tumor that extended to the floor of the mouth and the base of the tongue. Extended supraglottic laryngectomy was undertaken for the patient. The dia

Control of Myofibroblast Differentiation and Function by Cytoskeletal Signaling.

The cytoskeleton consists of three distinct types of protein polymer structures - microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules; each serves distinct roles in controlling cell shape, division, contraction, migration, and other processes. In addition to mechanical functions, the cytoskeleton accepts signals from outside the cell and triggers additional signals to extracellular matrix, thus playing a key role in signal transduction from extracellular stimuli through dynamic recruitment of diverse intermediates of the intracellular signaling machinery. This review summarizes current kn

Spindle cell sarcoma of the vulva with myofibroblastic differentiation.

OBJECTIVE: Primary vulvar sarcomas are rare lesions of the lower genital tract. We report the case of a patient with a spindle cell sarcoma of the vulva. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 44-year-old woman presented with a painless vulvar mass. Vulvar biopsy demonstrated a spindle cell sarcoma with myofibroblastic differentiation. RESULTS: Pretreatment evaluation revealed no evidence of metastatic disease, and magnetic resonance imaging found no local masses. The patient underwent right radical vulvectomy with negative margins and tolerated the procedure well. CONCLUSIONS: Women undergoing gynecolog

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the hand: A case report.

The present study reports the case of a 58-year-old male patient who repeatedly presented with hand ulcers that were diagnosed as cellulitis. Upon histological analysis, however, an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) was diagnosed. IMTs rarely occur in the hands. The involved tissue was removed with the tumor, with the exception of the tendons and cutaneous nerve. The involved tendon sheath and epineurium were carefully resected. After 2 years of follow-up, the patient showed no signs of tumor recurrence and the hand function was good. IMTs in the hands are relatively rare, and are often

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the gallbladder: imaging aspects.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are rare benign lesions that may often be mistaken for malignancies due to their imaging resemblance. There are a limited number of case reports in the literature on the location at the level of the gallbladder. We present a case of IMT of the gallbladder that emphasizes the importance of conventional ultrasound as the primary method of detection, as well as the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound and strain elastography in describing the lesion, thus contributing to the differential diagnosis.

Colonic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours: an institutional review.

AIM: The aim of the study was to present the largest series of colonic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (C-IMFT) in the literature so far and to provide a review of this condition. METHOD: A retrospective review was carried out of a consecutive series of patients diagnosed with a C-IMFT at a community-based hospital with a specialized gastrointestinal unit between 2002 and 2011. The main outcome measures were success rate and postoperative complications. Using a set of terms we searched the PubMed database for papers published on C-IMFT. We reviewed the data from these studies and case rep

Unusual case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in maxilla.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare lesion found mostly in children and young adults and originates from the lung, abdominopelvic region, and retroperitoneum. Clinical manifestations of IMT or imaging are nonspecific and diagnosis is based on histopathological and immunohistochemical findings. Minority of all IMTs will metastasize. IMT in the oral cavity is an extreme rarity and this is a first case report of IMT in maxilla causing delayed tooth eruption and multiple cervical root resorption with an 11-year-old child. The IMT reported here was positive for smooth muscle actin, v

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the larynx-a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a borderline neoplasm with uncertain malignant potential. It is a rare disease also referred to as an inflammatory pseudotumor, a plasma cell granuloma, and an inflammatory fibrosarcoma. IMT rarely also involves the head and neck region with only 50 cases of laryngeal IMT reported in the literature, and this is the first case with reported magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. METHODS: A 37-year-old man with a 1-year history of hoarseness, dysphagia, and fatigue presented with a right vocal fold submucosal mass and was treated conse

[Pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferation of the bladder-case report].

A 66-year-old man with a history of sporadic von Recklinghausen' s disease was treated for pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferation in the bladder. The patient had a history of repetitive recurrence of bladder carcinoma requiring transurethral resection (TUR) 4 times and 1 course of intravesical BCG instillation. Three months after the fourth TUR, an intravesical solid mass 4 cm in diameter was detected. Suspicion of recurrent bladder carcinoma led to a fifth TUR procedure. Pathological findings showed submucosal growth of myofibroblasts with myxoidal stroma and we made a diagnosis of P…

Low-grade myofibroblastic proliferations of the urinary bladder.

CONTEXT: Myofibroblastic proliferations of the urinary bladder, which share some similarities with nodular fasciitis, were first reported in 1980. Since then, they have had several designations, the most frequently used being inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Based on both histopathologic and prognostic grounds, some authors prefer the term pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferation, at least for some of the proliferations. These same scientists also assimilate the so-called postoperative spindle cell nodules with the pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferations. Little is known abo

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor parieto-occipital bone.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a diverse group of lesions first described in lung and later on reported in various sites like stomach, bowel, spleen, bone. We report a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a 30-year-old male who presented with a slowly progressive scalp swelling of two-year duration. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intradiploic well enhancing lesion in parietal and occipital bone, isointense on T1 weighted images and hypo intense on T2 weighted images with dural enhancement. On histopathological examination, the lesion was composed of variable admixture of
