AIMS: To provide detailed information about the types of drugs used and the patterns of drug use for injecting drug users presenting for methadone treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective case note review was carried out for 126 consecutive clients who were assessed for methadone treatment in the Otago province over a 2 year period. Patterns of drug use in the three months prior to presentation were recorded.
RESULTS: Over 60% of those presenting were using three or more opioid drugs, with the most common being homebake (63%), sustained release morphine sulphate tablets (62%), buprenorphine (52%)

Three experiments were conducted with rhesus monkeys to assess some behavioral effects of the opium alkaloid, thebaine, in relation to its dependence liability. The concurrent intramuscular administration of naloxone did not antagonize the rate-decreasing effects of thebaine on a fixed-ratio (FR) schedule of food-reinforced responding. Animals trained to self-administer codeine (0.3 mg/kg/inj) on an FR 30 schedule did not self-administer thebaine (0.003-1.0 mg/kg/inj) at rates comparable to these of codeine. We have studied the hydroxylation mechanism of l-Tyr by the heme-dependent enzyme CYP76AD1 from the sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). This enzyme has a promising biotechnological application in modified yeast strains to produce medicinal alkaloids, an alternative to the traditional opium poppy harvest. A method for the routine profiling of illicit heroin samples received in casework has been developed which depends on simple and straightforward sample pretreatment, followed by gas chromatography on a capillary column using flame-ionization detection. The factors affecting the choice of each aspect of the procedure are discussed, as are the statistical data for sampling and the chromatography. Components of illicit heroin derived from opium and other adulterants have been identified. The significance of data from samples examined in 1986 is discussed.

The effects of 12 elements on the formation and accumulation of isoquinolines were studied in opium poppy seedlings (Papaver somniferum L.). Three types of concentration dependences of the effects of the elements under study were determined. The elements served as activators (Co, Mo, W, Cr, and Cu) or inhibitors of these processes (B, Fe, V, Mn, and Ca). The molecular mechanisms of action of these regulators are discussed. The optimum concentrations of Co and Mo were tested under combined treatment conditions with these elements.
