A psychophysical paradigm for investigating unconscious perception was used to test the hypothesis of dissociation between detection and identification of phobic stimuli. Spider-phobic and non-phobic participants were presented with masked images of spiders and flowers and an equal number of control stimuli in a random sequence. After each masked stimulus was flashed, participants first reported whether or not an object was presented. Then they identified each stimulus as either a spider or a flower, regardless of their prior detection response. Phobic participants identified both detected and

Locations of multiple stationary objects are represented on the basis of their global spatial configuration in visual short-term memory (VSTM). Once objects move individually, they form a global spatial configuration with varying spatial inter-object relations over time. The representation of such dynamic spatial configurations in VSTM was investigated in six experiments. Participants memorized a scene with six moving and/or stationary objects and performed a location change detection task for one object specified during the probing phase. The spatial configuration of the objects was manipulat

How orthographically similar are words such as paws and swap, flow and wolf, or live and evil? According to the letter position coding schemes used in models of visual word recognition, these reversed anagrams are considered to be less similar than words that share letters in the same absolute or relative positions (such as home and hose or plan and lane). Therefore, reversed anagrams should not produce the standard orthographic similarity effects found using substitution neighbors (e.g., home, hose). Simulations using the spatial coding model (Davis, Psychological Review 117, 713-758, 2010),

Forward masking by harmonic tone complexes was measured for on- and off-frequency maskers as a function of masker phase curvature for two masker durations (30 and 200 ms). For the lowest signal frequency (1 kHz), the results matched predictions based on the expected interactions between the phase curvature and amplitude compression of peripheral auditory filtering. For the higher signal frequencies (2 and 6 kHz), the data increasingly departed from predictions in two respects. First, the effects of the masker phase curvature became stronger with increasing masker duration, inconsistent with th

Binaural signal detection in an NoSpi task relies on interaural disparities introduced by adding an antiphasic signal to diotic noise. What metric of interaural disparity best predicts performance? Some models use interaural correlation; others differentiate between dynamic interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs) of the effective stimulus. To examine the relative contributions of ITDs and ILDs in binaural detection, we developed a novel signal processing technique that selectively degrades different aspects (potential cues) of binaural stimuli (e.g., only ITD

Masking by harmonic complexes depends on the frequency content of the masker and its phase spectrum. Harmonic complexes created with negative Schroeder phases (component phases decreasing with increasing frequency) produce more masking than those with positive Schroeder phases (increasing phase) in humans, but not in birds. The masking differences in humans have been attributed to interactions between the masker phase spectrum and the phase characteristic of the basilar membrane. In birds, the similarity in masking by positive and negative Schroeder maskers, and reduced masking by cosine-phase

The purpose of this investigation was to judge whether the Lombard effect, a characteristic change in the acoustical properties of speech produced in noise, existed in adductor spasmodic dysphonia speech, and if so, whether the effect added to or detracted from speaker intelligibility. Intelligibility, as described by Duffy, is the extent to which the acoustic signal produced by a speaker is understood by a listener based on the auditory signal alone. Four speakers with adductor spasmodic dysphonia provided speech samples consisting of low probability sentences from the Speech Perception in No

BACKGROUND: Future fighter aircraft will include three-dimensional sound signals as part of the human-machine interface. The reduction in cerebral vascular flow associated with maneuvering acceleration (+Gz) may affect a pilot's ability to perceive and interpret such aural cues. We hypothesized that vascular deprivation along the cochlea produced by +Gz would raise hearing thresholds either globally or specifically at 1000 Hz.
METHODS: We compared hearing thresholds for pure tones at 250, 1000, 6000 and 10,000 Hz during exposure to +1 Gz vs. +4 Gz. Experiments were conducted with steady noise

Italian children (n = 125) were classified into dyslexics, poor readers and ordinary readers. The dyslexics were further classified into the Boder and Bakker subtypes. The children were tested with the form-resolving field (FRF), which measures central and peripheral visual recognition. Dyslexics show higher correct identification of letters in the periphery, supporting the notion of a different distribution of lateral masking. A numerical characterization of individual FRFs--C2R--reliably distinguishes between dyslexics and ordinary readers. The wider distribution of recognition, similar acro

The auditory backward recognition masking (ABRM) and intensity discrimination (ID) thresholds of children with a specific language impairment and poor reading (SLI-poor readers), children with an SLI and average reading (SLI-average readers), children with a specific reading disability and average spoken language skills (SRD-average language), and children with normal spoken and written language (controls) were estimated with "child-friendly" psychophysical tasks. The pattern of ABRM and ID scores suggests that a subset of children with concomitant oral language and reading impairments has poo

A parametric study of the reduction of threshold shift (toughening phenomena) that takes place during the course of an interrupted noise exposure is described. 266 chinchillas randomly assigned to one of 32 experimental groups were exposed to one of the following: a 400-Hz narrow-band impact noise having a center frequency of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, or 8.0 kHz and peak sound-pressure levels of 109, 115, 121, or 127 dB. The impacts were presented for 5 d, 24 h/d or for 20 d, 6 h/d. corresponding pairs of exposures had equal energy. Group mean noise effects were estimated from pure-tone threshold ob

Input-output functions on the basilar membrane of the cochlea show a strong compressive nonlinearity at midrange levels for frequencies close to the characteristic frequency of a given place. This article shows how many different phenomena can be explained as consequences of this nonlinearity, including the "excess" masking produced when 2 nonsimultaneous maskers are combined, the nonlinear growth of forward masking with masker level, the influence of component phase on the effectiveness of complex forward maskers, changes in the ability to detect increments and decrements with level, temporal

Syntactic context effects on the identification of spoken words, and the involvement of attention in mediating these effects, were examined in seventh-grade children with reading disabilities and children who were good readers. The subjects were asked to identify target words that were masked by white noise. All targets were final words embedded in unveiled sentences. Relative to a syntactically neutral context, the identification of targets whose morpho-syntactic structure was congruent with the context was facilitated and the identification of syntactically incongruent targets was inhibited.

Some of the effects of noise on the perception of plosive-vowel syllables have been investigated. It was found that noise added to the syllables for the duration of the speech had a more deleterious effect on perception than noise of the same intensity played continuously. Physiological experiments have shown that the response thresholds of cochlear nerve fibers to tones are raised by continuous background noise but not by short bursts of noise. It is suggested that this may be responsible for the speech perception results. In order to investigate this, an auditory model was developed which in

Auditory brain stem responses were obtained from normal-hearing infants and adults in response to bone-conducted 500 and 2000 Hz tones presented in quiet and high-pass noise masking. The tones were presented at 70 (500 and 2000 Hz) and 46 (2000 Hz) dB peak to peak equivalent (re: 1 dyne RMS). The high-pass noise-masked waveforms were subtracted in succession to obtain derived responses, providing estimates of the cochlear regions contributing to the nonmasked responses. Findings indicate that the auditory brain stem response to bone-conducted 500 Hz tones is frequency specific for both infants

The object of this paper was to evaluate the binaural hearing in 20 patients suffering from unilateral otosclerosis. Binaural performance was assessed at a test frequency of 500 Hz using masking level difference (MLD) before and after surgery. The postsurgical results showed abnormal MLDs in patients in whom stapedotomy had successfully corrected the threshold asymmetry. Three possible hypotheses regarding this phenomenon were investigated: (1) cochlear damage, (2) auditory deprivation and (3) a mechanical middle ear anomaly due to the surgical prosthesis or healing processes. The analyses sug

Chronic electrodes, placed on the round windows of four adult chinchillas, were used to measure whole-nerve action potential (AP) thresholds and tuning curves. The AP quiet thresholds were within 17 dB of thresholds measured by behavioral methods and within 3 dB of those measured by other evoked response procedures. The AP tuning curves, obtained by a simultaneous masking procedure, were also similar to previously measured tuning curves in the chinchilla. These results indicate that long-term indwelling electrodes can be successfully placed on the chinchilla round window and used to measure th

The monaural speech-reception threshold of sentences in noise, here defined as the 50% correct-syllables threshold, was measured for a female speaker with and without speechreading via a video monitor. The additional visual information resulted in a 4.6-dB lower threshold for a group of 12 young subjects and in a 4.0-dB lower threshold for a group of 18 elderly subjects compared to auditory presentation alone.

One of the problems encountered in conveying information to the skin by means of vibratory patterns is that presenting patterns, such as letters of the alphabet, in close spatial and temporal proximity, may result in considerable masking. Generally, there is more interference when the masking stimulus follows the target (backward masking) than when it precedes it (forward masking). Masking has also been demonstrated with vibrotactile patterns derived from speech signals. Masking may be reduced by increasing the temporal and spatial separation between patterns; however, other problems may arise

Two sets of letters, i.e., those subject to reversal/rotation such as b, d, p, and q, and others, e, i, u, w, x, and o, were tachistoscopically presented singly to 15 normal readers (aged 6 to 14 yr.) and 29 dyslexic children (aged 7 to 13 yr.). Half the presentations were subject to masking by visual noise. Contrary to a prediction based on temporal-sequencing deficiency, the dyslexics required a significantly longer time than normals for recognition. This occurred under both the masked and non-masked conditions. Reversible/rotational letters gave more difficulty than other letters only when
