BACKGROUND: Barium, as a heavy divalent alkaline earth metal, can be found in various products such as rodenticides, insecticides, depilatories, and fireworks. Barium can be highly toxic upon both acute and chronic exposure. The toxicity of barium compounds is dependent on their solubility. 5-(4-Aminophenoxymethyl)-2-oxazolidinethiones were synthesized by the cyclization of 1-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-amino-2-propanol in the presence of potassium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. This oxazolidinethione, on reaction with suitable isothiocyanates, yielded 5-[4-(substituted thiocarbamido)phenoxymethyl]-2-oxazolidinethiones. These compounds antagonized the uterotropic effects of diethylstilbestrol in female rats and possessed approximate LD50 values of 400-greater than 800 mg/kg.

BACKGROUND: Primary aldosteronism is frequently caused by mutations in the KCNJ5 (potassium inwardly rectifying channel subfamily J member 5) gene, encoding a G-protein inwardly rectifying potassium channel. These mutations disrupt the channel's selectivity filter, permitting abnormal sodium influx. We aimed to identify compounds that selectively activate mutant KCNJ5 channels. By further increasing sodium conductance, such compounds could induce lethal sodium influx in mutant adrenal cells, providing a targeted therapeutic strategy for primary aldosteronism caused by KCNJ5 mutations.

The study was performed to ascertain the value of potassium magnesium citrate, magnesium citrate, and potassium citrate in overcoming thiazide-induced hypokalemia and magnesium loss. Sixty-two healthy subjects were first administered hydrochlorothiazide, 50 mg/d. After 3 weeks of thiazide treatment (or earlier for potassium level </=3.5 mEq/L), they were randomized to receive one of three drugs while continuing to receive thiazide: potassium magnesium citrate (49 mEq of potassium, 24.5 mEq of magnesium), magnesium citrate (24.5 mEq/d of magnesium), or potassium citrate (49 mEq/d of potassium).

Antidepressant drug imipramine hydrochloride (IMP) is amphiphilic which shows surfactant-like behavior in aqueous solutions. We have studied the effect of adding electrolytes and non-electrolytes on the micellar behavior of IMP by making cloud point (CP) and dye solubilization measurements. In this work, we prepared a three-dimensional vanadium octacyanoniobate-based magnet, K(0.10)V(II)(0.54)V(III)(1.24)[Nb(IV)(CN)(8)].(SO(4))(0.45).6.8H(2)O. This compound exhibits ferrimagnetism with a Curie temperature of 138 K, in which the sublattice magnetizations of V(II) (S = (3)/(2)) and V(III) (S = 1) are antiparallelly ordered to that of Nb(IV) (S = (1)/(2)). The estimated superexchange interaction constants of V(II)-Nb(IV) and V(III)-Nb(IV) are -51 and -25 cm(-1), respectively.
