Patterned mixed monolayers of porphyrins on nanocrystalline TiO(2) films were fabricated by substrate-catalyzed monolayer photolithography. Tin(IV) protoporphyrin IX (SnPP), zinc(II) protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP), and iron(III) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine (FeTCP) were adsorbed to TiO(2) through the carboxyl groups, yielding saturation surface amounts per projected area of approximately 10(-7) mol/cm(2). Sn-protoporphyrin is a synthetic heme analogue which inhibits the catabolism of natural heme to bilirubin and can suppress a wide variety of experimentally induced or naturally occurring forms of jaundice in animals and man. Photosensitization of the endometrium was attempted in vitro and in vivo by intrauterine administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid, which is converted to the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX. Protoporphyrin IX was found in both functional and basal layers of the endometrial glands at concentrations nine and 10 times higher than myometrium in in vitro and in vivo experiments, respectively. Selective endometrial photosensitization is possible with topical 5-aminolevulinic acid, but it might not be distributed sufficiently evenly for use as a sensitizing agent in photodynamic ablation.

Three cases of erythropoietic protoporphyria are reviewed. The three patients constitute members of one family. The protoporphyrin content of the red blood cells was high, but porphyrins and their precursors in the urine and faeces were not excessive. OBJECTIVES: To investigate a possible effect of adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, or both operations combined in children on hemoglobin concentration and iron metabolism.
METHODS: Children eligible for surgery due to recurrent tonsillitis or upper airway obstruction had a venous blood sample drawn at the time of the operation and 6 months later. One hundred and three preoperative and 91 blood samples at follow-up from patients not given iron supplementation were available for analysis of hemoglobin concentration, serum-ferritin and protoporphyrin-IX in erythrocytes.

The tumor suppressors Retinoblastoma (Rb) and p53 are frequently inactivated in liver diseases, such as hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) or infections with Hepatitis B or C viruses. Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a disorder of haem biosynthesis characterized by a reduction in ferrochelatase and subsequent accumulation of protoporphyrin IX.
