Many obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasites have adapted a distinct invasion mechanism involving a close interaction between the parasite ligands and the sialic acid (SA) receptor. We found that sialic acid binding protein-1 (SABP1), localized on the outer membrane of the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii, readily binds to sialic acid on the host cell surface. Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are the most common cause of ocular infections. Species B human adenovirus type 3 (HAdV-B3) causes pharyngoconjunctival fever (PCF), whereas HAdV-D8, -D37, and -D64 cause epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Pathogens such as non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) evade the immune system by presenting host-derived sialic acids. Nonimmune hydrops fetalis is the most severe clinical manifestation of lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs). Around 14 different LSDs have been accounted for as 1-15% of the cause of nonimmune hydrops fetalis. UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase is the key enzyme of sialic acid biosynthesis in vertebrates. It catalyzes the first two steps of the cytosolic formation of CMP-N-acetylneuraminic acid from UDP-N-acetylglucosamine. BACKGROUND: Serum sialic acid (SA) is an acute phase response marker. Additionally, it is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic disease and is higher in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The objective of this study was to determine the association of SA with blood coagulation and fibrinolysis in T2DM patients.
METHODS: The levels of serum SA and blood coagulation and fibrinolysis markers were measured in patients with T2DM. The associations of SA with hemostatic markers and other variables were assessed.

Transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (TGEV) agglutinates erythrocytes of several species by virtue of sialic acid binding activity of the surface protein S. We have isolated and characterized five haemagglutination-defective (HAD) mutants.
