A patient is described whose foolish sunbathing practices during adolescence predisposed her to an intense and unpleasant skin reaction during the course of radiation therapy approximately 50 years later. The phenomenon suggests that solar-induced changes in the skin can persist over a very long period of time and emphasizes the need for light-skinned individuals to protect their skin from the intense rays of the sun.

The present study investigated the phototoxic effect of bergamot oil and its photosensitive component, bergapten, on sunburn cell (SBC) production in guinea pig skin. The histological change known as individual cell shrinkage necrosis (so-called "sunburn cell' in mammalian epidermis) would seem to be suitable for quantitative morphological studies on the effect of psoralen treatment and near UV irradiation. The number of sunburn cells per unit length of epidermis versus varying doses of narrow waveband UVR, 305-375 nm, has been studied and an action spectrum constructed which has maximal activity at 320-335 nm. The implications of these findings are discussed.

This article describes data on the intensity of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation collected during field questionnaire-based surveys in Athens, Greece. The surveys were conducted over 11 days of July and October 2010 at three different urban, outdoor sites. A total of 1104 interviews were conducted. The participants were asked to report whether they felt they got a sunburn at the moment of the interview. Questions related to personal characteristics including skin type and exposure time (visit duration at the interview site) were also included in the questionnaire.
