Late results of total shoulder replacement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis of the shoulder is a progressive and destructive joint disease, and similar to arthritis in other joints, progression of the disease is unpredictable and may stop at any stage of involvement. Between 1983 and 1996, more than 500 shoulder prostheses were implanted in patients at the authors' institution. Total shoulder replacement yields satisfactory short and long term results even in patients with severely destructed joints. Pain relief is reliable and significant as reported in short and long term studies. In most patients the functional result is good or acceptable. Alt

What could posturography tell us about balance in essential tremor?

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is a neurological disorder characterized primarily by action tremor. Balance impairments in ET patients were formerly considered to be uncommon and simply age-related. However quantitative assessment with posturography has revealed impairments in control of both static and dynamic balance. RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of the present study is to assess postural stability with different posturographic techniques in ET patients. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study conducted in two University Hospitals. Eleven patients diagnosed with essential tremor and

Progression of Functional Gait in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are characterized by progressive deterioration of axonal projections of upper motor neurons leading to abnormal locomotion. The clinical course of HSP as well as the definition of the best instruments to assess its progression is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the progression of functional gait in individuals with HSP and to define sensitivity to change, minimal clinically important difference (MCID), and validity of timed functional tests of gait (TFT). The study was constituted of two phases: a cross-sectional study and a prospe

Magnetic Resonance Guided Radiation Therapy (MRgRT) Prostate Motion and Margins.

INTRODUCTION: Systematic and random errors in radiation dose delivery necessitate the use of planning target volume (PTV) margins to ensure adequate clinical target volume (CTV) treatment. Advances in magnetic resonance-guided radiation therapy (MRgRT) have enabled improved imaging with possible margin reduction; however, the optimal PTV margins remain uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptive radiotherapy component of intra-fractional prostate movement in MRgRT for prostate cancer (PCa) patients and determine appropriate PTV margins. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 18

Effects of visual real-time feedback during decline walking on gait parameters: a crossover randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Developing osteoarthritis is influenced by the control of dynamic functional leg alignment and biomechanical load. While research on level walking with load-related feedback has sparked treatment innovations, there is limited knowledge about the effects of feedback during downhill walking on gait kinematics and kinetics. The potential of external feedback for neuromuscular knee control is unexplored. We examined if real-time feedback affects frontal knee range of motion and load ratio during downhill walking on a treadmill compared to self-paced and matched speed walking. METHODS:

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks Provide Motion Grading for High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography of the Scaphoid.

In vivo high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) studies on bone characteristics are limited, partly due to the lack of standardized and objective techniques to describe motion artifacts responsible for lower-quality images. This study investigates the ability of such deep-learning techniques to assess image quality in HR-pQCT datasets of human scaphoids. In total, 1451 stacks of 482 scaphoid images from 53 patients, each with up to six follow-ups within one year, and each with one non-displaced fractured and one contralateral intact scaphoid, were independently gr

A validation of two motion sensors in the prediction of child and adult physical activity levels.

The authors sought to assess the reliability and validity of two motion activity sensors in the prediction of observed physical activity levels in adults and children by means of two studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. In study 1, 50 adults were observed in fall 1984 for one hour of recreational activity while they simultaneously wore two motion sensors: an activity counter (i.e., LSI Moving Activity Monitor (GMM Electronics Inc., Verona, PA)) and an electronic accelerometer (i.e., Caltrac Personal Activity Computer (Hemokinetics, Inc., Vienna, VA)). The results in

String-like collective motion mediates the martensitic α-β transition in titanium.

Recent computational studies have examined the structural relaxation time τα of cooled liquids, the atomic diffusivity D within grain boundaries of crystalline materials, and the interfacial regions of bulk, thin film, and nanoparticles of crystalline materials under equilibrium conditions. They have revealed the general occurrence of string-like collective atomic motion and its importance for understanding the typically non-Arrhenius dynamics of all these materials. In the present work, we extend our study of this type of collective motion in crystalline metal materials to consider the α-β di

Prospective longitudinal evaluation of elbow motion following pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures.

BACKGROUND: Temporary elbow stiffness after the treatment of a supracondylar humeral fracture in a child is often a concern of parents. However, little attention has been devoted to documenting, longitudinally, the time required for motion recovery. The purpose of the present study was to provide a prospective, longitudinal evaluation of elbow motion in a large population of pediatric patients undergoing treatment of a supracondylar humeral fracture. METHODS: We prospectively examined 373 patients (375 fractures) who presented to our urgent care center between March 1, 2007, and September 30,

Modulation of beer fermentation time and yeast metabolite generation using audible sound with elevated particle motion.

Studies on the impact of audible sound on yeast growth and metabolism during beer fermentation have focused mainly on the pressure component of sound, with limited attention to particle motion. This study investigated three sound treatments (800-2000 Hz 140 dBRMS re 1 μPa2 @ 1 m, 800-2000 Hz 110 dBRMS re 1 μPa2 @ 1 m, and 4000-10,000 Hz 140 dBRMS re 1 μPa2 @ 1 m) with elevated particle motion, compared to a no-sound control (91 dB), assessing yeast cells in suspension, extracellular metabolites and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The 800-2000 Hz treatment significantly reduced fermentation

Looking for Synergies in Healthy Upper Limb Motion: A Focus on the Wrist.

Recent studies on human upper limb motion highlighted the benefit of dimensionality reduction techniques to extrapolate informative joint patterns. These techniques can simplify the description of upper limb kinematics in physiological conditions, serving as a baseline for the objective assessment of movement alterations, or to be implemented in a robotic joint. However, the successful description of kinematic data requires a proper alignment of the acquisitions to correctly estimate kinematic patterns and their motion variability. Here, we propose a structured methodology to process and analy

Fast stochastic librations and slow rotations of spin labeled stearic acids in a model phospholipid bilayer at cryogenic temperatures.

The spin label DOXYL (4,4-dimethyl-oxazolidine-1-oxyl) is a nitroxyl ring that can be attached rigidly at specific C-atom positions in the stearic acid. 5-DOXYL-stearic acid and 16-DOXYL-stearic acid in 1-Palmitoyl-2-oleoyl- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) lipid bilayers were studied using electron spin echo (ESE) spectroscopy at low temperatures. The anisotropy of ESE decay across the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum evidence that these spin labels participate in orientational motions at temperatures down to approximately 120 K for 5-DOXYL-stearic acid and down to approximate

Interpreting the Projected Frontal Area in Front Crawl: Determining the Projected Frontal Area of Each Body Segment.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to provide evidence for the interpretation of the projected frontal area (PFA) during front crawl. To achieve this goal, we developed a method for calculating the PFA of each body segment using digital human technology and compared the pressure drag under two calculation conditions: a combination of the PFA with and without accounting for the horizontal velocity of each body segment. METHODS: Twelve competitive male swimmers performed a 15-m front crawl at 1.20 m·s -1 . The three-dimensional positions of the reflective markers attached to the swimmer's body were reco

Evaluating Postural Transition Movement Performance in Individuals with Essential Tremor via the Instrumented Timed Up and Go.

Flexibility in performing various movements like standing, walking, and turning is crucial for navigating dynamic environments in daily life. Individuals with essential tremor often experience movement difficulties that can affect these postural transitions, limiting mobility and independence. Yet, little research has examined the performance of postural transitions in people with essential tremor. Therefore, we assessed postural transition performance using two versions of the timed up and go test: the standard version and a more complex water-carry version. We examined the total duration of
