Residual craniofacial growth: A cephalometric study of 50 cases.

Although orthodontists focus intensively on the diagnosis and treatment of their patients, they pay less attention to post-treatment development and the risk of relapse often caused by the late growth of the arches and bony base. The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine the growth changes, which can affect craniofacial dimensions in subjects aged between 13 and 17 years. A retrospective longitudinal study including 50 patients (31 girls and 19 boys) whose end of orthodontic treatment coincided with the end of the post-pubertal period (13-14 years) involved a comparison of the cephalo

Smile analysis in different facial patterns and its correlation with underlying hard tissues.

BACKGROUND: The subject's inherent growth pattern can be an effective factor in characteristics of smile. More vertical growth in the posterior maxilla than in the anterior maxilla could result in a changed relationship between the occlusal plane and the curvature of the lower lip upon smile. In order to broaden the understanding of how smile gets affected by growth pattern and the underlying hard tissues, the present study was undertaken to compare smile in various growth patterns, to determine sexual dimorphism, if any; as well as to correlate smile with underlying hard tissues. METHODS: On

Repeated adjustment of new dentures for dysphagia.

When multiple tooth loss causes loss of occlusal-masticatory function, functional recovery is normally obtained with the help of removable dentures. After resection of the jawbone or tongue because of tumors, the movement of the tongue and its surrounding tissues is limited, and patients exhibit a more pronounced loss of chewing and swallowing than that observed in other cases of multiple tooth loss. In such cases, it is necessary to take extra care in determining the position of the mandible, arrangement of artificial teeth, and morphology of the palate. In the present case, the left lower ja

Associations between alveolar heights and vertical skeletal pattern in Moroccan adults: a cephalometric study of 127 clinical cases.

The aim of our study was to investigate vertical dentoalveolar compensation in untreated patients, in search of an association between vertical facial pattern and alveolar heights. This study involved the participation of 127 untreated Moroccan adults from the patient population of the ODF (Dentofacial Orthopedics) Department at the Center for Dental Treatment and Consultation (CCTD) in Rabat. Full adult dentition was the only criterion for inclusion. Patients with major syndromes and patients with facial clefts were excluded from the study. For the purposes of this analysis, we used profile t

Effects of bite raising and occlusal awareness on tongue thrust in untreated children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of conscious bite (occlusal awareness), with or without immediate bite raising, on tongue thrust during swallowing and speech. A total of 110 untreated children (age range, 7-12 years; mean, 9 years 8 months) were examined with various extraoral and intraoral observation tests. Subjects were divided according to sex and score on the labiolingual dysfunction index (LLDI) into high (LLDI-H) and weak (LLDI-W) dysfunction groups. A special, previously tested chocolate paste was used to map tongue and tooth contacts during task performance, i

Case report: orthodontic treatment of dental problems in incontinentia pigmenti.

Incontinentia pigmenti is an uncommon genodermatosis that occurs in female infants. The characteristic dental defects are partial anodontia and the presence of some peg-shaped teeth. This report describes a patient with incontinentia pigmenti who exhibited multiple missing teeth in both arches. The patient had malpositioned teeth and decreased occlusal vertical dimension associated with the missing teeth. Orthodontic treatment was required for prosthetic purposes. The dental anomalies of incontinentia pigmenti and the treatment procedure are presented.

[Vertical condylar hyperplasia, clinical and histologic aspects. Apropos of 2 cases].

Condylar hyperplasia is a pathologic condition associated with an overgrowing of the condylar cartilage. It is possible to distinguish two clinical forms; vertical and horizontal when the lesion is unilateral. We have reported two cases of vertical condylar hyperplasia, both of them treated by simple condylectomy, in our opinion the selected treatment. Histopathological images show an increase of the growth and maturation layers of the condylar cartilage and inclusions of cartilaginous tissue, with appearance of glove fingers into the underlying cancellous bone.

Systemic bone diseases and reduction of the residual ridge of the mandible; primary hyperparathyroidism. A preliminary report.

Twenty-five edentulous patients with established hyperparathyroidism were evaluated to establish a possible relation between extreme reduction of the height of the mandible and systemic bone loss. As an important parameter of the severity of the systemic bone loss, the level of the intact biologically active molecule of the parathormone was used. In this study no relation between hyperparathyroidism and reduction of the residual alveolar ridge could be established. In only two patients the reduction could be classified as "severe." Furthermore the level of the active, intact, circulating parat

Relationships among retropalatal airway, pharyngeal length, and craniofacial structures determined by magnetic resonance imaging in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: The integration of anatomical and nonanatomical parameters will improve our ability to predict the outcomes of OSA treatment. Currently, no standardized, quantitative classification of upper airway anatomical traits is available. The retropalatal (RP) airway is the most important area to consider when planning anatomical treatment. However, current evaluation methods feature qualitative conventional endoscopy. Here, we describe a quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method used to classify RP airway patterns. METHODS: We recruited 117 males; 20 simple snorers and 97 patie

Vertical ridge augmentation using the modified shell technique--a case series.

Vertical defects of the alveolar crest often restrict the placement of implants. The outcome of vertical augmentation is unpredictable so we aimed to develop a technique that has predictable results. We used autogenous grafts trimmed to shells less than 1mm thick to rebuild the vertical dimensions of the alveolar ridge. The shells were fixed with microscrews and the vertical space between the shell and the residual bone was filled with autogenous particulate bone. Vertical dimensions before and after augmentation were measured and descriptive statistics calculated. A total of 17 patients (10 f

Craniofacial morphology in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: cephalometric evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by a reduced airflow through the upper airways during sleep. Two forms of obstructive sleep apnea are described: the central form and the obstructive form. The obstructive form is related to many factors, such as the craniofacial morphology. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between the morphology of the cranial base, of the mandible and the maxilla, and obstructive sleep apnea severity. METHODS: Eighty-four patients, mean age of 50.4 years old; 73 males and 11 females with obstructive sleep apnea were enrolled in the present study.
