Improved performance and safety from Argus II retinal prosthesis post-approval study in France.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the post-approval long-term outcomes of the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis, with a specific focus on its functional visual benefit in patients' daily activities. METHODS: Eighteen patients with bare light perception due to end-stage retinitis pigmentosa were included in a French prospective, multicentre, single-arm study and followed for 2 years. Visual benefit in patients' daily activities was monitored through the use of the Functional Low-vision Observer Rated Assessment (FLORA), and the final score at 2 years was the primary effectiveness outcome. Standardized visual ass

Visual percepts evoked with an intracortical 96-channel microelectrode array inserted in human occipital cortex.

BACKGROUNDA long-held goal of vision therapy is to transfer information directly to the visual cortex of blind individuals, thereby restoring a rudimentary form of sight. However, no clinically available cortical visual prosthesis yet exists.METHODSWe implanted an intracortical microelectrode array consisting of 96 electrodes in the visual cortex of a 57-year-old person with complete blindness for a 6-month period. We measured thresholds and the characteristics of the visual percepts elicited by intracortical microstimulation.RESULTSImplantation and subsequent explantation of intracortical mic…

Behavioral and neuroplastic changes in the blind: evidence for functionally relevant cross-modal interactions.

The study of blind individuals provides insight into the brain re-organization and behavioral compensations that occur following sensory dep … t of complete loss of visual input. These issues have important implications for the development of visual prosthesis aimed at restoring some degree of vision in the blind.

Wide-angle simulated artificial vision enhances spatial navigation and object interaction in a naturalistic environment.

Objective. Vision restoration approaches, such as prosthetics and optogenetics, provide visual perception to blind individuals in clinical settings. Yet their effectiveness in daily life remains a challenge. Stereotyped quantitative tests used in clinical trials often fail to translate into practical, everyday applications. On the one hand, assessing real-life benefits during clinical trials is complicated by environmental complexity, reproducibility issues, and safety concerns. On the other hand, predicting behavioral benefits of restorative therapies in naturalistic environments may be a cru

Visual prostheses such as the Argus II provide partial vision for individuals with limited or no light perception. However, their effectiven … hermal and distance filters compared to unfiltered video. Adding a thermal and distance filter to a visual prosthesis system can enhance the performance of mobility activities by removing clutter in the background, showing people and warm objects with the thermal camera, or nearby obstacles with the distance filter.

Study of the Influence of Visuo-Haptic Feedback on Prosthetic Embodiment.

When improving an upper-limb prosthetic system, choosing whether to prioritise visual design or haptic performance becomes crucial and offers valuable insights for advancing prosthesis development. This paper investigates the influence of multisensory feedback on prosthetic embodiment, focusing on key components of embodiment, including ownership, multisensory, and agency, through two Virtual Reality (VR) experiments. Our first study involved 24 participants without limb loss in a target-reaching task using different visual renderings (glove, realistic, prosthetic hands) and haptic feedback mo

Surgical steps and relevant anatomical landmarks for the implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis reservoir placed in the retropubic and submuscular abdominal ("ectopic") space.

Surgical implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis is considered the gold-standard treatment for severe erectile dysfunction. Reservoir placement is one of the most challenging steps of this procedure and requires knowledge of the related anatomy. To meet these demands, we have established a postgraduate masterclass program on penile prosthesis implantation that identifies the essential anatomical landmarks demonstrated in predissected anatomical specimens and offers a step-by-step surgical training carried out in body donors under tutored guidance. The main focus of this study is the te
