The interaction between dietary copper and zinc as determined by tissue concentrations of trace elements was investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were fed diets in a factorial design with two levels of copper (0.5, 5 μg/g) and five levels of zinc (1, 4.5, 10, 100, 1000 μg/g) for 42 d. In rats fed the low copper diet, as dietary zinc concentration increased, the level of copper decreased in brain, testis, spleen, heart, liver, and intestine. There was no significant effect of dietary copper on tissue zinc levels. In the zinc-deficient groups, the level of iron was higher in most ti…

In the present study we monitored serum zinc (Zn) and serum alkaline phosphatase (AP) levels during Zn supplementation in (A) a young zinc depletion syndrome (ZDS) patient with severe Zn deficiency, (B) three acrodermatitis enteropathica (AEP) patients with mild Zn deficiency and (C) 7 elderly and 3 younger patients without Zn deficiency. In (A) serum Zn and serum AP values were low, but following parenteral Zn the parameters rose to normal levels (r = +0.79, p less than 0.001). In (B) serum Zn and serum AP levels decreased when oral Zn was stopped, but shortly returned to normal upon reinitia…

We studied the effect of dietary zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) on the levels of these elements in serum (at 1, 3, and 5 months of age) and in hair (at 5 months of age) of breast- and formula-fed infants. Three different formulas were used: (a) Commercially available standard infant formula containing 1.0 mg/L of Zn and 30 micrograms/L of Cu; (b) Zn supplemented formula, containing 3.2 mg/L of Zn and 30 micrograms/L of Cu; and (c) Zn- and Cu-supplemented formula, containing 3.2 mg/L of Zn and 400 micrograms/L of Cu. The median Zn content of breast milk was 4.8 mg/L at 1 week, 2.9 mg/L at 1 month, 1…

The title single-crystal was obtained during the synthesis of a Mg-Al-Zn-Ga alloy, which was achieved by subjecting the alloy to elevated pressures and temperatures. The compound crystallizes in the space group Im3 (No. 204), with seven distinct metal-atom sites. One of these is occupied by gallium, two by aluminium and zinc, one by zinc and magnesium, and three by magnesium. The structure model contains a vacancy-centred Bergman cluster and a 26-face polyhedron centred on one of the magnesium sites. The crystal structure framework in this study shows a marked similarity to previously examined…

Zinc, a vital trace element, holds significant importance in numerous physiological processes within the body. It participates in over 300 enzymatic reactions, metabolic functions, regulation of gene expression, apoptosis and immune modulation, thereby demonstrating its essential role in maintaining overall health and well-being. While zinc deficiency is associated with significant health risks, an excess of this trace element can also lead to harmful effects. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 6.7 to 15 mg per day are referred to be the dietary reference value. An excess of the…

Zinc poisoning has been reported from many parts of the world. It is one of the global health problems that affect many organs, if exposed by inhalation of zinc vapors or by consumption of contaminated food and water. Long term exposure to zinc compounds from different sources such as air, water, soil, and food, lead to toxic effects on body systems, especially digestive, respiratory, and nerve systems, and also causes cancer. Zinc levels can be determined in blood, urine, hair, and nails. Patients with zinc toxicity need chelating agents, other pharmacological treatment, protective lung venti…

Study with the objective to assess the capillary zinc concentrations in children, considering differences according to sex, age, growth, and socioeconomic status and hair characteristics. A random sample comprised of 282 children. Capillary zinc concentrations were analyzed using the Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry technique. The capillary level of zinc less than 70 μg/g was considered as deficient. Reference curves of the World Health Organization were used to rate children with height deficit. Domiciliary characteristics and benefit of government assistance were considered as socioecono…

Zinc deficiency is one of the most consistent nutritional/biochemical observations in alcoholic liver disease (ALD). The objectives of our research are to determine how alcohol interferes with cellular zinc homeostasis and if zinc deficiency is a causal factor in the development of ALD. Metallothionein (MT) is a major protein responsible for cellular zinc homeostasis. MT-transgenic (MT-TG) mice with hepatic overexpression of MT and elevation of zinc level were resistant to ethanol-induced liver injury. MT-knockout (MT-KO) mice with a reduction of hepatic zinc were more susceptible to alcohol t…

Human growth retardation from zinc deficiency was first reported over 40 years ago. More recently marginal zinc deficiency was shown to occur during pregnancy and infancy, and to be prevalent in children throughout the world. Zinc with or without macronutrients and other micronutrient deficits may also occur in patients with gastrointestinal disease. Particular attention must be given to the suboptimal intake of zinc which results in growth retardation. The single most important cause of nutritional growth retardation (NGR) worldwide is poverty related malnutrition involving multiple macro-and…

The increase in prevalence of asthma is strongly dependent on environmental factors, including diet. Significant decreases in the intake of dietary zinc may be an important contributing factor to the increasing incidence of wheezing and asthma, but there have been no studies evaluating zinc levels in wheezy infants. Our objective was to investigate the zinc status of wheezy infants. Wheezy infants (n = 34) and healthy children (n = 14) were included in the study. Total IgE and eosinophil counts were obtained, and skin testing was done with a battery of 25 antigens with appropriate positive and…

BACKGROUND: Abnormal thyroid function tests (serum thyrotropin [TSH], free thyroxine [T(4)] and free triiodothyronine [T(3)]) are frequently seen in hospitalized patients. Assessment of thyroid function in these patients is difficult. It has been suggested that acutely ill patients may be hypothyroid at the tissue level. Erythrocyte zinc (EZn) has been shown to be increased in hypothyroidism. The aim of this study was to examine EZn as an index of thyroid status of hospital patients.
METHODS: In order to assess the thyroid status at tissue level, we measured EZn in 26 healthy subjects, 39 cri…

The effect of zinc supplementation of infant formula on zinc nutrition and growth of healthy infants was studied longitudinally from birth to age 12 mo. The zinc-supplemented group (n = 16) received the same formula as the unsupplemented group (n = 16) except for the addition of 61 mumol (4 mg) Zn/L as sulfate. After age 2 mo in the breast-fed and unsupplemented groups the mean serum zinc concentration remained stable at approximately 9.9 mumol/L. The zinc supplement increased the mean serum zinc concentration to 13.0 mumol/L by age 6 mo. With increasing intake of solid foods, the concentratio…

This study included 48 patients with chronic rheumatic heart disease, 60 control subjects for plasma zinc comparison and 20 control specimens of heart valves from postmortem cases of accident deaths. Plasma and cardiac tissue levels of zinc in patients with rheumatic heart disease were significantly lowered compared to controls. Since zinc is important in the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins it may influence tissue growth, reparative process and structure and function of biomembrane. Low zinc levels may also influence cell mediated immunity and may increase susceptibility of patients to…
