BACKGROUND: Chordoma is a rare malignant tumor of the axial skeleton. Percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) is a minimally invasive technique that allows freezing of tumors under imaging control. The purpose of our retrospective study was to investigate the outcome of PCA in a selected cohort of patients with sacrococcygeal chordoma, with a minimum of 5 years follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients were treated in 10 sessions. The mean follow-up was 57.3 months. We evaluated the feasibility, the procedure-related complications, the impact on pain control and oncological outcomes.

Known as a benign arrhythmia and normally requiring no specific treatment, accelerated idioventricular rhythm can rarely degenerate to a life-threatening arrhythmia. Here, we present a child with left coronary cusp-originating accelerated idioventricular rhythm, degenerating into torsades de pointes and resulting in cardiac arrest, which was ablated with a cryocatheter. An 11-year-old boy, followed due to asymptomatic accelerated idioventricular rhythm before, was referred to our department because he had experienced an aborted cardiac arrest during sleep. He had been resuscitated for 5 minute

PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of dual-energy computed tomography (CT) virtual noncalcium imaging (VNCa) to visualize ice ball growth during skeletal cryoablation procedures in the spine and bony pelvis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cryoablation was performed in the spine and bony pelvis of swine and human cadavers at 5 and 6 locations, respectively. CT scans were acquired every 2 minutes using a dual-source dual-energy scanner. Artifacts were suppressed using iterative metal artifact reduction, and ablation zones in the bones and surrounding tissue were visualized using multiplanar VNCa and mixed kV

BACKGROUND: The optimal dosage for cryoablation of atrial fibrillation (Cryo-AF) is still unknown. To evaluate the efficacy of an individualized freeze duration, we compared the clinical outcome of patients treated with a time-to-pulmonary vein isolation (TT-PVI) or temperature-guided ablation protocol to the outcome of patients treated with a conventional ablation protocol.
METHODS: A total of 164 consecutive patients were included in the study. One method employed was a conventional dosing protocol (at least 2 applications of 180 s each) (the Cryo-AFConventional group n = 84), and the secon

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the most widely adopted strategy for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) ablation. Limited evidence on acute results and late outcomes of cryoballoon (CB)-PVI in patients with structural heart disease (SHD) exist. The aim of this analysis was to compare acute procedural results and the 1-year recurrence rate of a single CB-PVI procedure in a PAF population with and without SHD.
METHOD: From April 2012 to May 2017, a total of 2,031 patients with AF underwent CB-PVI and were followed prospectively in the framework of the One Shot TO Pulmonary vein

Myosin binding protein H-like (MYBPHL) is a protein associated with myofilament structures in atrial tissue. The protein exists in two isoforms that share an identical amino acid sequence except for a deletion of 23 amino acids in isoform 2. In this study, MYBPHL was found to be expressed preferentially in atrial tissue. The expression of isoform 2 was almost exclusively restricted to the atria and barely detectable in the ventricle, arteria mammaria interna, and skeletal muscle. After atrial damage induced by cryo- or radiofrequency ablation, MYBPHL was rapidly and specifically released into

BACKGROUND: The second-generation cryoballoon (CB2) provides effective and durable pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) associated with encouraging and reproducible clinical outcome data. The latest- -generation cryoballoon (CB3) incorporates a 40% shorter distal tip, thus allowing for an increased rate of PVI real-time signal recording and facilitating individualized ablation strategies taking the time-to- -effect (TTE) into account. However, whether this characteristic translates into favorable clinical success has not been evaluated yet. Herein was investigated 1-year clinical success after CB3 i

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Catheter ablation has become the treatment of choice in an increasing number of arrhythmias in children and adolescents. There is still limited evidence of its use at a national level in Spain. The aim was to describe the characteristics and results of a modern monocentric series form a referral tertiary care centre.
METHODS: Retrospective register of invasive procedures between 2004 and 2016 performed in patients under 17 years and recorded clinical characteristic, ablation methodology and acute and chronic results of the procedure.
RESULTS: A total of 291 proce

PURPOSE: Pain is the main factor that determines the postoperative course for patients undergoing pectus bar placement. Cryoablation of the intercostal nerves has been suggested to mitigate this pain. We instituted a protocol for using intercostal cryoablation and report our early results compared to our immediately previous cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients undergoing minimally invasive repair for pectus excavatum between January 1, 2017, and August 21, 2017. Demographic data, anthropometrics, operative times, type and duration of patient analgesi

BACKGROUND: Pleural biopsy is often obtained in patients with undiagnosed exudative pleural effusion during pleuroscopy. Standard forceps have been traditionally used for the biopsy. Cryoprobes are being increasingly used for transbronchial lung biopsy as they obtain larger specimens and have less crush artifact. However, the safety and feasibility of cryoprobe biopsy compared to standard forceps for pleural biopsy has not been fully assessed.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the safety and feasibility of cryoprobe biopsy in the pleural space using semi-rigid pleuros

IMPORTANCE: Cryolipolysis is a popular, well-tolerated nonsurgical procedure that uses controlled cooling to selectively destroy fat cells. Central submental cryolipolysis has been reported to be safe and effective, but many patients would benefit from extending this treatment over the entire submental region.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of cryolipolysis for reduction of lateral and central submental fat.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The study population consisted of 14 participants who were treated from January 22 to June 30, 2016, in the lateral and central subm

INTRODUCTION: Data on long-term outcomes of cryoballoon (CB) ablation for treatment of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) are sparse. Here, we report the first 3-year follow-up results and predictors of success for catheter ablation using the second-generation CB in patients with persistent AF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: For this prospective observational study, we enrolled 101 patients ablated with the second-generation CB at our institution. The endpoint was the first documented recurrence (> 30 seconds) of AF, atrial flutter, or atrial tachycardia after a 3-month blanking period. Follow-up data

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 1%-2% of women develop cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2-3 (CIN 2-3) annually worldwide. The prevalence among women living with HIV is higher, at 10%. If left untreated, CIN 2-3 can progress to cervical cancer. WHO has previously published guidelines for strategies to screen and treat precancerous cervical lesions and for treatment of histologically confirmed CIN 2-3.
METHODS: Guidelines were developed using the WHO Handbook for Guideline Development and the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach. A multidi

Although atrioesophageal fistula (AEF) formation is a well known, albeit rare, catastrophic complication of atrial fibrillation radiofrequency ablation procedures, there are less data regarding this complication using the cryoballoon technique. We report on 3 cases of AEF as a complication of cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation at 3 different institutions with 2 different generations of cryoballoons.

AIMS: We examined the efficacy and safety of pulmonary vein (PV) isolation, using a cryoballoon catheter.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 117 consecutive patients presenting with paroxysmal (n = 92) or persistent (n = 25) atrial fibrillation (AF), who underwent attempts at isolation of 442 PV with a cryoballoon catheter. They were followed in our ambulatory department for every 3 months, or earlier if they reported symptoms. A 48 h ambulatory electrocardiogram was recorded at the 3-month visit. We analysed the immediate and long-term procedural and clinical outcomes. We isolated 385 of 442 PV

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the MRI appearance and enhancement of renal masses within 36 hours after cryoablation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 2003 through January 2008, 129 patients underwent imaging-guided cryoablation for renal masses. Twenty-three of these patients underwent MRI within 36 hours after ablation. During MRI, acquisition of axial T1- and T2-weighted images was followed by administration of a gadolinium contrast agent. Standard follow-up included MRI 3-6 months after ablation.
RESULTS: Eight of the 23 renal masses imaged within 6-36 hours after ab

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) occurs due to abnormal proliferation of retinal vessels. The most important risk factors which predispose to development of ROP include oxygen therapy, anemia needing blood transfusion, sepsis and apnea. Very low birth weight neonates, those born at ≤ 32 week of gestation and other preterm neonates with risk factors must be screened for ROP. As a general rule first screening should be done at 1 month of postnatal age. If screening detects ROP not needing treatment follow up should be planned according to location and stage of ROP. Better visual outcomes are obs

The symptomatic newborn infant with Ebstein's anomaly is in critical condition and is difficult to treat successfully. Furthermore, supraventricular tachyarrhythmia in patients with Ebstein's anomaly may determine the early and late results. We report a successfully treated case of extracardiac total cavopulmonary connection with a right-sided maze procedure after a modified Starnes' operation during the neonatal period.
