Associations of Total, Cognitive/Affective, and Somatic Depressive Symptoms and Antidepressant Use With Cardiovascular Disease-Relevant Biomarkers in HIV: Veterans Aging Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the associations of total, cognitive/affective, and somatic depressive symptoms and antidepressant use with biomarkers of processes implicated in cardiovascular disease in HIV (HIV-CVD). METHODS: We examined data from 1546 HIV-positive and 843 HIV-negative veterans. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and past-year antidepressant use was determined from Veterans Affair pharmacy records. Monocyte (soluble CD14 [sCD14]), inflammatory (interleukin-6 [IL-6]), and coagulation (D-dimer) marker levels were determined from prev

The role of cognitive functioning in the relationship between childhood trauma and a mixed phenotype of affective-anxious-psychotic symptoms in psychotic disorders.

Cognitive impairments in patients with psychotic disorder have been associated with poor functioning and increased symptom severity. Furthermore, childhood trauma (CT) exposure has been associated with worse cognitive functioning as well as co-occurrence of affective-anxious-psychosis symptoms or a 'mixed phenotype of psychopathology' (MP), which in turn is associated with greater symptom severity, and poor functioning. This study aims to evaluate if cognition could be associated with CT/MP. 532 patients with non-affective psychotic patients were assessed on CT, symptom profile, cognition, fun

Longitudinal trajectories of total, cognitive-affective, and somatic depressive symptoms in relation to hip fracture risk: evidence from the HRS and ELSA cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has established a link between depressive symptoms and the incidence of hip fractures, with most studies relying on a single assessment and failing to differentiate among symptom subtypes. This study utilized repeated measurements to construct symptom trajectories and separately examined the cognitive-emotional and physical dimensions to elucidate their relationship with the risk of hip fractures. METHODS: We analyzed data from individuals aged 45 and older participating in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS, USA) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA

Increased galanin-galanin receptor 1 signaling, inflammation, and insulin resistance are associated with affective symptoms and chronic fatigue syndrome due to long COVID.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Long COVID (LC) often experience neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), collectively referred to as the physio-affective phenome of LC. Activated immune-inflammatory pathways and insulin resistance significantly contribute to the physio-affective phenome associated with LC. METHODS: In a cohort of 90 individuals, categorized into those with and without LC, we evaluated, 3-6 months following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, the correlations between the Hamilton Depression (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety (HAMA), and Fibro-Fatigue

STN-DBS and LCIG differentially affect long-term axial symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

Bilateral subthalamic nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation (STN-DBS) and Levodopa-Carbidopa Intestinal Gel (LCIG) represent established treatment options for complicated Parkinson's disease (PD). Evidence regarding their effectiveness on axial symptoms remains limited, despite disability. This observational real-world cohort study included 317 PD patients who received STN-DBS (N = 203) or LCIG (N = 114) between 2005 and 2023 at two Italian centeres to compare their short- and long-term effects on axial symptoms. At baseline, LCIG group exhibited more severe axial and motor symptoms and higher preval

Running Therapy Reorganizes Dynamic Brain Networks Linked to Symptom Improvement in Affective Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Exercise therapy reduces depressive and anxiety symptoms, but its neural mechanisms remain unclear. We examined whether running therapy reorganizes dynamic brain functional connectivity in affective disorders (AFFs). METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was analyzed at baseline in 66 healthy control participants and 50 individuals with AFFs. Coactivation pattern (CAP) analysis identified recurring whole-brain states and their temporal dynamics. After baseline comparisons, patients received 16 weeks of running therapy or antidepressant treatment. Then, we ex

Affect and post-COVID-19 symptoms in daily life: An exploratory experience sampling study.

Insight into the daily life experiences of patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome is lacking. The current study explored temporal fluctuations of and associations between positive and negative affect and symptoms throughout the day in previously hospitalised post-COVID-19 patients using an experience sampling methodology. Ten participants (age: median = 60, interquartile range = 9 years; 50% women; 80% ≥1 comorbidity; 8-12 months since hospital discharge) filled out brief online questionnaires, six times a day for 14 consecutive days. Positive and negative affect, and self-reported symptoms (phy

Mental health symptoms among those affected by Huntington's disease: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although cognitive and motor symptoms of Huntington's disease (HD) are associated with disease progression, the underlying causes of psychological symptoms are not as clearly understood. Recent evidence suggests that some mental health difficulties experienced by people with HD are shared by noncarriers within HD families. Accordingly, there is a need to evaluate potential systemic contributors to HD mental distress, to support meaningful interventions for psychological symptoms in people with HD and affected families. METHOD: We used short-form Problem Behaviors Assessment mental

Effects of cigarette abstinence on negative and positive affect by depression symptom levels: A lab study.

BACKGROUND: High negative affect and low positive affect are key depression-related states that may be greater following acute tobacco abstinence. This study aimed to test associations between depression symptom levels and acute tobacco abstinence with negative affect and positive affect. METHODS: Following a baseline session, participants attended two counterbalanced laboratory sessions (non-abstinent, abstinent) and completed measures of positive and negative affect at rest (i.e., when not completing a task) and during a film clip task. RESULTS: Individuals with elevated depression symptom

Time of trauma prospectively affects PTSD symptom severity: The impact of circadian rhythms and cortisol.

A key feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disruption of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis feedback sensitivity and cortisol levels. Despite known diurnal rhythmicity of cortisol, there has been little exploration of the circadian timing of the index trauma and consequent cortisol release. Stress-related glucocorticoid pulses have been shown to shift clocks in peripheral organs but not the suprachiasmatic nucleus, uncoupling the central and peripheral clocks. A sample of 425 participants was recruited in the Emergency Department following a DSM-IV-TR Criterion A trauma.

Factors affecting the decision to investigate older adults with potential cancer symptoms: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Older age and frailty increase the risk of morbidity and mortality from cancer surgery and intolerance of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The effect of old age on diagnostic intervals is unknown; however, older adults need a balanced approach to the diagnosis and management of cancer symptoms, considering the benefits of early diagnosis, patient preferences, and the likely prognosis of a cancer. AIM: To examine the association between older age and diagnostic processes for cancer, and the specific factors that affect diagnosis. DESIGN AND SETTING: A systematic literature review.

Starting or Switching to an Integrase Inhibitor-Based Regimen Affects PTSD Symptoms in Women with HIV.

As the use of Integrase inhibitor (INSTI)-class antiretroviral medications becomes more common to maintain long-term viral suppression, early reports suggest the potential for CNS side-effects when starting or switching to an INSTI-based regimen. In a population already at higher risk for developing mood and anxiety disorders, these drugs may have significant effects on PTSD scale symptom scores, particularly in women with HIV (WWH). A total of 551 participants were included after completing ≥ 1 WIHS study visits before and after starting/switching to an INSTI-based ART regimen. Of these, 14%

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Bipolar Disorder Symptoms and Partner Affect: Longitudinal Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization ranks bipolar disorder (BD) as the 7th leading cause of disability. Although the effects on those with BD are well described, less is reported on the impact of BD on cohabiting partners or any interactions between the two; this requires in vivo data collection measured each day over several months. OBJECTIVE: We set out to demonstrate the utility of ecological momentary assessment with BD couples measured using yoked smartphone apps. When randomly prompted over time, we assumed distinct patterns of association would emerge between BD symptoms (both de
