Causal relationship of sugar-sweetened and sweet beverages with colorectal cancer: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Prospective cohort studies have suggested that sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) intake is significantly associated with the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, it remains unclear whether this observed association was susceptible to potential confounding factors due to the long-term development process of CRC, and the risk of CRC associated with sweet beverages has rarely been reported. We aimed to investigate the association between SSBs/sweet beverages and CRC risk. METHODS: We performed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using independent genetic vari

Heterologous expression as a tool to increase GABA and riboflavin production in fermented vegetable beverages.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and riboflavin are bioactive compounds with health-promoting properties that can be produced by particular lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains. GABA synthesis from glutamate involves the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase and the glutamate/GABA antiporter encoded by gadB and gadC, respectively, albeit yields are not usually high. In this study, different strategies were applied for obtaining fermented vegetable beverages enriched with high yields of both riboflavin and GABA. First, it was explored the construction and selection of LAB engineered to overexpress the gad

Chemical Precursors of Flocs in Sweetened Beverages: Mechanisms of Formation, Analytical Methods, and Industrial Strategies.

Flocs, visible particles formed in sugar-sweetened beverages, reduce clarity and consumer acceptance of products. Their presence can be caused not only by different types of trace impurities in the sugar but also by interactions among beverage components. In this review, scientific reports on acid beverage flocs (ABFs) and alcohol flocs are summarized, the main pathways for their formation are described, and practical options for detecting them and preventing their formation in beverages are compiled. Modulation of Intestinal Microbiota Through Kefir-Based Beverages in a Murine Model of Acute Pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) severely disrupts gut microbiota, leading to dysbiosis. This study investigated whether kefir derived from pasteurized whole milk (PMK) or whey (WK) could mitigate AP-induced gut microbiota alterations and promote gut health in a murine model. Male BALB/cJRj mice were assigned to CONTROL, AP-induced (PAN), PMK, WK, PMKPAN, or WKPAN groups. Fecal bacterial DNA was analyzed via 16S rRNA sequencing. AP induction caused characteristic dysbiosis, increasing Marinifilaceae, Tannerellaceae, Odoribacter, and Parabacteroides. In AP mice, PMK treatment significantly reduced Tanne

Machine Learning-Enhanced Chemiresistive Sensors for Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Methanol Adulteration in Alcoholic Beverages.

Methanol poisoning poses significant health risks, particularly in less developed countries, where adulterated alcoholic beverages often lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Current diagnostic methods, such as gas-liquid chromatography and blood gas analysis, are complex and prohibitively expensive, making them inaccessible in resource-constrained settings. To address this issue, we present a novel, simple, low-cost chemiresistive sensor for the rapid, selective, and ultrasensitive detection of methanol at ultralow concentrations in the presence of high ethanol concentrations. The sensor le

Quality Attributes of Ultra-High Temperature-Treated Model Beverages Prepared with Faba Bean Protein Concentrates.

The objective of this research was to develop a model faba bean drink with a high concentration of protein (>4% w/w). The protein molecular weights and frequency for both faba and soy were assessed using SDS-PAGE. Results showed similarities in the protein molecular weight of both faba and soy (mainly 11S globulin ~Glycinin and 7S globulin ~β-conglycinin). Thus, faba can be considered as a potential soy replica in plant-based milk beverages. Oil-in-water emulsions (5-8% w/w available protein) were prepared using faba bean protein concentrate (FPC), 1% sunflower oil, and 0.2% sunflower lecithin

An Overview on Nutritional Aspects of Plant-Based Beverages Used as Substitutes for Cow's Milk.

The presence of milk in meals and products consumed daily is common and at the same time the adoption of a milk-free diet increases due to milk allergy, lactose intolerance, vegan diets, and others. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for plant-based beverages, which present variable and, sometimes, unknown nutritional characteristics. This study sought to compare the nutritional aspects of plant-based beverages used as substitutes for cow's milk described in scientific studies. Therefore, we used a review of the scientific literature on PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Goo

Modified congener analysis: Quantification of cyanide in whole blood, other body fluids, and diverse beverages.

The congener analysis is routinely used for the determination of volatile compounds in body fluids and beverages for forensic investigations. Although intoxications with cyanide via smoke inhalation or ingestion of cyanide salts are frequently encountered in forensic medicine, the inclusion of hydrogen cyanide in this analysis was never studied in detail. In this work, a very simple, fast, and sensitive quantification method with headspace gas chromatography and flame ionization detection for the analysis of cyanide in whole blood-was developed and validated. In contrast to the standard sample

Inhibitory control effects in adolescent binge eating and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and snacks.

Inhibitory control and sensitivity to reward are relevant to the food choices individuals make frequently. An imbalance of these systems can lead to deficits in decision-making that are relevant to food ingestion. This study evaluated the relationship between dietary behaviors - binge eating and consumption of sweetened beverages and snacks - and behavioral control processes among 198 adolescents, ages 14 to 17. Neurocognitive control processes were assessed with the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a generic Go/No-Go task, and a food-specific Go/No-Go task. The food-specific version directly ties th
