Body-Related Attentional Bias in Adolescents Affected by Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Attentional biases toward body-related information increase body dissatisfaction. This can lead at-risk populations to develop psychopathologies. This phenomenon has not been extensively studied in girls affected by idiopathic scoliosis. This work aimed to study the cognitive processes that could contribute to the worsening and maintaining of body image disorders in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Twenty-eight girls were recruited and tested for body image dissatisfaction through the Scoliosis-Research-Society-22-revised (SRS-22r) questionnaire. Attentional biases towards disease-related body

Examining Facets of Body Image Disturbance Across Anorexia Nervosa Illness and Recovery Stages.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests body image disturbance (BID) is a core feature of anorexia nervosa (AN), however, more research is required on how BID may differ across illness and recovery stages. This study aimed to investigate differences in BID facets (body image dissatisfaction and body image perception) among women with AN who were currently ill and at varying recovery stages, and women with no history of eating disorders (non-ED controls). METHOD: One hundred ninety-nine women (18-65 years old) meeting criteria for either current AN (AN-C; n = 73), weight-restoration (AN-WR; n = 86), part

To Inject or to Reject? The Body Image Perception among Aesthetic Dermatology Patients.

Background: Nowadays, aesthetic dermatology treatment has become not only physical beautification but also it can have positive effects on patients’ mental health. Body dysmorphic disorder can be the reason for treatment dissatisfaction. In the general population, the prevalence of BDD is 1.9% and it is more common among cosmetic patients. The aim of this study was to conduct the most comprehensive evaluation of body image and BDD among aesthetic patients. Methods: We recruited a group of 412 individuals, who were asked to complete 6 different on-line questionnaires concerning self-image, i.e.

Body image, disordered eating and anabolic steroid use in female bodybuilders.

Body dissatisfaction and unhealthy eating practices are common among sports and activities that require low body fat or low body weight for enhanced performance. Competitive Bodybuilding is a sport that requires participants to be exceptionally lean and mesomorphic, thus participants may be vulnerable to developing unhealthy eating and weight control practices, as well as using anabolic steroids. This study compares competitive female bodybuilders (CFBBs) and recreational female weight-training controls (RFWTs) on a broad scope of eating related and general psychological characteristics. Orthorexia Nervosa Risk and Psychological Correlates in Higher-Education Dance Students.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa has been increasingly examined in performance-oriented populations; however, evidence in higher-education dance students remains limited, particularly across multiple dance disciplines and with integrated psychological assessment. OBJECTIVE: To examine orthorexia nervosa distribution among higher-education dance students across 4 disciplines (classical dance, contemporary, flamenco, and Spanish dance) and to analyse its association with psychological distress and body dissatisfaction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 318 students enrolled in

High-Caloric Realimentation and Mental and Physical Well-Being in Patients With Extreme Anorexia Nervosa. A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: While high caloric realimentation (HCR) is increasingly recommended for quick weight restoration of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), the development of AN-specific psychopathology and somatic symptoms during HCR have so far insufficiently been studied. METHOD: Patients hospitalised for the treatment of AN received oral realimentation starting with 2000 kcal under close medical monitoring and a substitution regimen. Weekly over the initial 6 weeks of treatment, assessments included body weight, drive for thinnesss, body dissatisfaction, depression, and somatic symptoms. RESULTS

Body image, shape, and volumetric assessments using 3D whole body laser scanning and 2D digital photography in females with a diagnosed eating disorder: preliminary novel findings.

We piloted three-dimensional (3D) body scanning in eating disorder (ED) patients. Assessments of 22 ED patients (including nine anorexia nervosa (AN) patients, 12 bulimia nervosa (BN) patients, and one patient with eating disorder not otherwise specified) and 22 matched controls are presented. Volunteers underwent visual screening, two-dimensional (2D) digital photography to assess perception and dissatisfaction (via computerized image distortion), and adjunctive 3D full-body scanning. Patients and controls perceived themselves as bigger than their true shape (except in the chest region for co

Mediators in the dissonance eating disorder prevention program.

Previous research has supported thin-ideal internalization as a partial mediator of the effects of the dissonance eating disorder prevention program. The current study replicated previous findings and examined an additional mediator, body dissatisfaction, hypothesized to account for partial intervention effects. As a secondary goal, we developed a more rigorous and accurate test of mediation that accounted for the temporal, causal interplay between mediator and outcome, and controlled for "reverse mediation". Results from a sample of 71 high-risk females (M age = 19.8, SD = 1.3) who participat

An exploratory study on portion size estimation errors: psychological correlates of portion size estimation errors in a non-clinical sample with normal-weight.

PURPOSE: Accurate perception of food portion sizes is implicated in healthy eating, yet little is known about psychological correlates of portion estimation in non-clinical, normal-weight adults. This exploratory study examined whether consumption intent (self vs other) and markers of psychological processes associated with eating (dietary restraint, shape/weight overvaluation, body dissatisfaction) are associated with portion size estimation errors, and whether these errors relate to body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Seventy-one adults (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) without current or past psychiatric

Prospective relationships between skin color satisfaction, body satisfaction, and binge eating in Black girls.

Although it has been demonstrated that (a) body dissatisfaction and internalization of societal appearance standards contribute to disordered eating and (b) that internalization of societal appearance standards leads to decreased skin color satisfaction among Black women, it has not been established whether skin color dissatisfaction contributes to disordered eating among Black women or girls. The objective of the present study is to determine the influence of skin color satisfaction as a potential predictor for binge eating, and its effect through body image in Black girls during the vulnerab

The role of mindfulness on the psychological aspects of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation, perfectionism, and rumination are perpetuating factors in anorexia nervosa (AN). Mindfulness can be protective and therapeutic. We aimed to understand the relationship between these factors and mindfulness in AN. METHODS: 20 adolescent girls in the acute phase of the AN, 16 in remission, and 40 in the control group were evaluated. RESULTS: Mindfulness was lowest in the acute AN group. The difference in the acute AN group regarding body dissatisfaction, emotion dysregulation, perfectionism, and mindfulness disappeared after controlling for the effects of depress

"There was no way I wanted other people to see me": Application and extension of objectification theory among women with Cushing's Syndrome.

Cushing's Syndrome (CS) is a rare condition caused by chronic excess cortisol and associated with changes to appearance, including uncontrollable weight gain. Researchers have identified unique body dissatisfaction challenges associated with appearance-altering illness, with little research in the context of CS. This pilot research qualitatively examined body image among women with CS pre- and post-diagnosis. Data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis across seven themes related to (1) the objectifying gaze of others, (2) self-objectifying thoughts and behaviors, (3) body shame, (4)

A Latent Profile Analysis of Body Image and Disordered Eating Attitudes and Behaviors in Adolescent Boys.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a risk period for body dissatisfaction which can contribute to eating disorder development. Given sex or gender differences in body image and disordered eating, it is critical to examine body image and eating concerns in adolescent boys and whether mindfulness is associated with body image and eating attitudes and behaviors in this population. METHODS: Self-report questionnaires on body image, mindfulness, and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors were completed by 151 adolescent boys (Mage = 14.58 years, SD = 2.08; 51.7% White) from a rural western United Sta

Helping clients overcome barriers to physical activity: a theory-based approach for mental healthcare providers.

Physical activity is effective for managing mental health conditions, yet a deeper understanding of factors linked with physical activity behaviors among mental health clients is needed. This cross-sectional study aimed to test a theory of planned behavior process model in a large, representative sample of adults in therapy. Participants (N = 478, M = 31.7 years, 44.6% male) completed an online survey including validated measures assessing theory of planned behavior variables (e.g. attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions) and physical activity. The model teste

Interactions between risk factors in the prediction of onset of eating disorders: Exploratory hypothesis generating analyses.

OBJECTIVE: Because no study has tested for interactions between risk factors in the prediction of future onset of each eating disorder, this exploratory study addressed this lacuna to generate hypotheses to be tested in future confirmatory studies. METHOD: Data from three prevention trials that targeted young women at high risk for eating disorders due to body dissatisfaction (N = 1271; M age 18.5, SD 4.2) and collected diagnostic interview data over 3-year follow-up were combined to permit sufficient power to predict onset of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder

Risk Factors for Eating Disorder Psychopathology within the Treatment Seeking Transgender Population: The Role of Cross-Sex Hormone Treatment.

Many transgender people experience high levels of body dissatisfaction, which is one of the numerous factors known to increase vulnerability to eating disorder symptoms in the cisgender (non-trans) population. Cross-sex hormones can alleviate body dissatisfaction so might also alleviate eating disorder symptoms. This study aimed to explore risk factors for eating disorder symptoms in transgender people and the role of cross-sex hormones. Individuals assessed at a national transgender health service were invited to participate (N = 563). Transgender people not on cross-sex hormones reported hig
