A case of atypical cleft palate abnormality that had not been identified before in a 9-year-old girl is presented. The cleft was localized laterally and in an oblique position at the soft palate. The patient had cleft palate repair. Finally, she had acceptable soft palate movements and speech.

A clinical and experimental study showed the negative effect of cleft lip and palate on the growth and development of the maxilla, as well as on the morphological and functional conditions of the small intestine, which resulted in impaired digestive function and malabsorption and led to atrophy of the hyper-regenerative type. The advantages of palate repair by double opposing Z-plasty include excellent access for complete mobilization of the palatal muscles, construction of an overlapping muscle sling, and avoidance of the growth-limiting horseshoe-type scars of the hard palate that result from lateral relaxing incisions or pushback procedures. The excellent speech that results seems to justify use of the procedure. An Abbé flap designed to mimic the normal philtrum placed over an interlacing orbicularis reconstruction that is well supported superiorly can salvage a thin, scarred upper lip and improve its mobility.

Stickler's syndrome is a much underdiagnosed entity in the ophthalmic population. It is a dominantly inherited disease of connective tissue whose ocular findings include moderate to severe myopia, vitreoretinal degeneration, retinal detachments, cataracts, and glaucoma. This retrospective study looks at the incidence and nature of ear disease in 50 adolescent patients who had cleft palates repaired in infancy. Half of these patients had a history of grommet insertion. We found that most patients had normal hearing (81%) and middle-ear pressures (86%), although about half had tympanic membrane abnormalities. 4 cases of Cornelia de Lange syndrome with cleft palate are presented. All cases had the characteristic features of this syndrome. As to oral manifestations, high arches were noted in 2 cases, cleft of hard and soft palate in 1 case, submucous cleft palate in 2 cases. As the others abnormalities, partial anodontia and microdontia were presented. In this report, characteristic features of these 4 cases with referential literature are described.

Isolated, apparently nonsyndromic cleft palate (CP) is thought to be etiologically heterogeneous. The multifactorial threshold explanation for CP is postulated in most cases. Mendelian inheritance has been documented in 3 families. National efforts promoting high-quality cleft care rely on accreditation by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA), though accreditation does not account for regional disease burden. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the number of new cases of cleft lip and cleft palate in the department (state) of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, in 2012.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey of midwives from communities identified through a two-stage cluster-sampling process. Midwives were asked how many babies they had delivered in the past year and how many of those newborns had various types of birth defects, as illustrated in pictures.
