A new approach to the treatment of nasal bone fracture: the clinical usefulness of closed reduction using a C-arm.

Closed reduction is commonly conducted for the treatment of a nasal bone fracture unless a concurrent fracture or a severe nasal septum fracture is observed. As the reduction, however, is not conducted through the direct gross observation of the fracture site, it is difficult to obtain a good result from it. Accordingly, a supplementary process is required. Closed reduction with a C-arm was conducted within the period from March 2009 to January 2010 on 50 patients with nasal bone fractures, to treat these fractures or to evaluate the postoperative conditions of such. The usefulness of the C-ar

[Research progress on correction methods of rotational deformity in closed reduction and intramedullary nail internal fixation of femoral shaft fracture].

Femoral shaft fracture (FSF) is a common fracture in orthopedic practice. Closed reduction and intramedullary nailing, due to their minimally invasive nature and ability to promote fracture healing, have become the mainstream treatment for FSF. However, accurately assessing and correcting rotational deformities during surgery remains a major challenge for this technique. This article reviews the research progress on the assessment and correction of rotational deformities in closed reduction and intramedullary nailing of FSF. Current assessment methods involve the wire-drawing method, femoral n

Heterotopic ossification of the elbow after closed reduction and retrograde intramedullary nailing for radial neck fracture treated by anconeus interposition.

Heterotopic ossification around the elbow can lead to considerable functional disability. We describe a case of a 42-year-old man who developed heterotopic ossification of his elbow after closed reduction of the elbow dislocation and radial neck fracture and retrograde intramedullary nailing for radial neck fracture. During the follow-up after initial surgery, movements of the elbow were gradually deteriorated and diagnosed as heterotopic ossification of the elbow. Implant removal, radial head excision along with heterotopic mass, and also interposition of the anconeus muscle resulted in impro

Failed closed reduction of a bifocal mandibular fracture because of dislocation of the mandibular ramus behind the styloid: case report.

We present an unusual dislocation of the mandibular ramus after a low condylar fracture associated with a fracture of the opposite body of mandible. As closed reduction failed, both fracture sites were exposed. The mandibular ramus was dislocated behind the styloid process, which was not shown on the preoperative radiographs. The intermediate fragment was freed and the fractures treated by miniplate osteosynthesis. The patient made an uneventful recovery with no residual deformity.

Evaluation of a 3D-Printed Model for Simulating Closed Reduction and Percutaneous Pinning of Unstable Distal Radius Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated construct validity of a 3D-printed displaced, unstable distal radius fracture (DRF) model for closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP). We hypothesized that clinical DRF experience levels would correlate with performance metrics during model CRPP. METHODS: Thirteen volunteers across a spectrum of DRF experience participated, including orthopaedic surgery residents and hand surgery specialists (fellows and attendings). Participants completed a survey assessing confidence and experience with DRF CRPP; watched a video demonstrating model CRPP and evaluation pro

Antibiotic administration for open reduction internal fixation of closed ankle fractures: Is one preoperative dose enough?

Although preoperative antibiotics are used routinely in ankle fracture surgery, there is considerable variability in postoperative antibiotic dosing regimens amongst surgeons. The aim of this study is to compare the rate of surgical site infection (SSI) in patients receiving one dose of preoperative antibiotics to patients who received more than one dose of antibiotics. A single-center Level I Trauma Center retrospective review of patients with isolated closed ankle fractures who underwent open reduction internal fixation over a 10-year period was performed. Demographics data and risk factors

Arthroscopically assisted closed reduction for displaced lateral humeral condyle fractures over 4 mm in children.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral humeral condyle fractures (LHCFs) are the most common intra-articular fracture occurring at the elbow in children. Conventional treatment for displaced pediatric LHCFs is open reduction and percutaneous pinning, and few studies have regarded the efficacy of arthroscopic-assisted techniques. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anatomic reduction via elbow arthroscopy for pediatric humeral lateral condyle fractures with displacements >4 mm. METHODS: A total of 32 children with LHCFs featuring displacements >4 mm were enrolled in this retrospective study. Arthroscopically

Factors Associated with Failed Closed Reduction in Flexion and Gartland Type III Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Most displaced supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHFs) are treated with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. While there are only a few possible indications for converting to an open reduction, a failed closed reduction is a common cause. This study aims to elucidate possible risk factors for failed closed reductions of SCHF. METHODS: A retrospective review of SCHF from 2010 to 2020 at a pediatric tertiary medical center, which underwent operative fixation, was conducted. Exclusion criteria were open fractures and reasons for open reduction other than failed closed reduction

Refraining from closed reduction of displaced distal radius fractures in the emergency department-in short: the RECORDED trial.

BACKGROUND: With roughly 45,000 adult patients each year, distal radius fractures are one of the most common fractures in the emergency department. Approximately 60% of all these fractures are displaced and require surgery. The current guidelines advise to perform closed reduction of these fractures awaiting surgery, as it may lead to post-reduction pain relief and release tension of the surrounding neurovascular structures. Recent studies have shown that successful reduction does not warrant conservative treatment, while patients find it painful or even traumatizing. The aim of this study is

Median Nerve Palsy in Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fractures Recovers Faster With Open Than Closed Reduction.

BACKGROUND: Management of supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF) with coexisting median nerve injury is controversial. Although many nerve injuries improve with the reduction and stabilization of the fracture, the speed and completeness of recovery are unclear. This study investigates median nerve recovery time using the serial examination. METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of SCHF-related nerve injuries referred to a tertiary hand therapy unit between 2017 and 2021 was interrogated. Factors related to the injury (vascularity, Gartland grade, open vs. closed fracture) and treatment
