Research supporting malaria control and elimination in China over four decades: a bibliometric analysis of academic articles published in chinese from 1980 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: China has accumulated considerable experience in malaria control and elimination over the past decades. Many research papers have been published in Chinese journals. This study intends to describe the development and experience of malaria control and elimination in China by quantitatively analysing relevant research using a bibliometric analysis. METHODS: A long-term, multistage bibliometric analysis was performed. Research articles published in Chinese journals from 1980 to 2019 were retrieved from the Wanfang and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. Year of

Combating echinococcosis in China: strengthening the research and development.

Echinococcosis is a neglected zoonotic disease, causing great morbidity and mortality due to the wide distribution of its endemic areas. China holds a high percentage in the global burden of both cystic and alveolar echinococcosis. A national survey conducted between 2012 and 2016 showed that an estimated 50 million people are at risk of contracting the disease in western China, of whom about 0.17 million are cases with echinococcosis.Despite this, research and development on echinococcosis in China is greatly inadequate compared to that in other countries. In this paper, we argue that there i

Vaccines of the future.

Vaccines of the future can be divided into three broad groups, namely those of the near future (<10 years); the medium-term future (10-19 years); and the long-term future (20-50 years). For the near future, there is some "low hanging fruit" which is clearly on the horizon, such as a Vi-conjugate vaccine for typhoid or a protein-based vaccine for Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B. Just slightly more distant will be vaccines for shigellosis and a common protein vaccine for Streptococcus pneumoniae. Also in this group, but not as far advanced, will be a vaccine for Group A streptococcus. I place

Global ageing: successes, challenges and opportunities.

The world's population is ageing rapidly, with significant increases in the numbers of the oldest old. This places great pressure on societies to adapt to this changing demography. Pertinent issues include provision of education and resource for long-term conditions. The priorities older people hold need to be fully understood and their contributions to society, often diverse and far-reaching, recognised with sincerity. Currently, health systems for older people can often feel reactive, fragmented and disjointed. These systems can harbour inequity and ageism, and leave both patients and health

Active Case Finding for Communicable Diseases in Prison Settings: Increasing Testing Coverage and Uptake Among the Prison Population in the European Union/European Economic Area.

Prison populations are disproportionally affected by communicable diseases when compared with the general community because of a complex mix of socioeconomic determinants and environmental factors. Tailored and adequate health care provision in prisons has the potential to reach vulnerable and underserved groups and address their complex needs. We investigated the available evidence on modalities and effectiveness of active case-finding interventions in prisons by searching PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for records on prison and active case finding with no language limit. A look into the Medical and Veterinary Entomology crystal ball.

Medical and Veterinary Entomology (MVE) represents a leading periodical in its field and covers many aspects of the biology and control of insects, ticks, mites and other arthropods of medical and veterinary importance. Since the first issue of the journal, researchers working in both developed and developing countries have published in MVE, with direct impact on current knowledge in the field. An increasing number of articles dealing with the epidemiology and transmission of vector-borne pathogens have been published in MVE, reflecting rapid changes in vector distribution, pathogen transmissi

Selected infectious disease disasters for nursing staff training at Egyptian Eastern Border.

Infectious disease disasters are events that involve a biological agent, disease and that result in mass casualties, such as a bioterrorism attack, an emerging outbreak of infectious disease; all disasters pose a risk of infection transmission. But, infectious disease disasters pose the great-risk to illness or death from an infectious disease. This study raised the awareness and improved knowledge by educational program for Military Nursing Staff on selected infectious disease disasters acquired at Egyptian Eastern Border. The selected arthropod-borne diseases were Anthrax, Tick borne relapsi

Use of antimicrobial agents in livestock.

Antimicrobial agents, especially antibacterial agents, are used throughout the world, across a diverse array of extensive and intensive livestock production systems, to protect the health and welfare of livestock and to improve their performance. While some agents that are used in livestock belong to classes that have no counterpart in human medicine, this is not the case for the most widely used agents: the tetracyclines, penicillins, macrolides and sulphonamides. Many bacterial diseases of livestock cause devastating losses of animal life and productivity. As a result, their keepers can lose

The return of yaws.

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Yaws Programme with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1952. It treated 300 million people in 50 countries and reduced global levels of the disease by more than 95% by the end of 1964. The problem was nearly solved, but there were resurgences particularly in the 1970s and recently in 2006. Kingsley Asiedu talks about what went wrong in the past and how to make sustainable gains in the control of this little-known disease today.

Pathogen inactivation: the definitive safeguard for the blood supply.

CONTEXT: Pathogen inactivation provides a proactive approach to cleansing the blood supply. In the plasma fractionation and manufacturing industry, pathogen inactivation technologies have been successfully implemented resulting in no transmission of human immunodeficiency, hepatitis C, or hepatitis B viruses by US-licensed plasma derivatives since 1985. However, these technologies cannot be used to pathogen inactivate cellular blood components. Although current blood donor screening and disease testing has drastically reduced the incidence of transfusion-transmitted diseases, there still looms

Alternative routes of immunization for prevention of infectious diseases: a new paradigm for the 21st century.

The prevention of infectious diseases by the use of vaccines represents one of medicine's greatest triumphs during the 20th century. This era has witnessed the global eradication of smallpox as a result of Jennerian cowpox vaccination, the elimination of paralytic poliomyelitis from the western hemisphere, and within 5-10 years the anticipated eradication of poliomyelitis worldwide as a result of the poliovirus vaccines. Next slated for worldwide eradication is measles, the great killer of infants and children, which each year extracts a global mortality of one million victims. Throughout the

Immunization and vaccine-preventable illness, United States, 1992 to 1997.

In contrast to the 1980s, immunization rates increased dramatically in the United States in the mid-1990s. Three-quarters of all 2-year-olds had received all recommended immunizations in 1997 as compared to just over one-half in 1992. Immunization rates for individual vaccines have reached 90 percent for three of the vaccines--measles, mumps, rubella; pollo; and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). The vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, however, and the newer vaccine for hepatitis B have not yet reached 90 percent of 2-year-olds. The rising immunization levels in young children hav

Sustained Reductions in Online Search Interest for Communicable Eye and Other Conditions During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: In a prior study at the start of the pandemic, we reported reduced numbers of Google searches for the term "conjunctivitis" in the United States in March and April 2020 compared with prior years. As one explanation, we conjectured that reduced information-seeking may have resulted from social distancing reducing contagious conjunctivitis cases. Here, after 1 year of continued implementation of social distancing, we asked if there have been persistent reductions in searches for "conjunctivitis," and similarly for other communicable disease terms, compared to control terms. OBJECTIV

Vaccination strategies for responding to public health emergencies of infectious diseases.

The outbreak of infectious diseases remains a serious public health problem in today's society, and emergency vaccination stands as a pivotal public health intervention for responding to the tricky situation and reducing the impact of public health emergencies. This review systematically examines vaccine emergency vaccination policies and expert recommendations from both domestic and international sources, revealing a current lack of standardized reference criteria and evidence-based implementation guidelines regarding optimal timing and specific intervention measures. It is imperative to devel

The impact of COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical interventions on notifiable infectious diseases in Poland: a comprehensive analysis from 2014-2022.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted widespread non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) like lockdowns and masking in Poland (2020–2022), significantly altering pathogen circulation. This created a unique opportunity to study the extended effects of these measures on other communicable diseases, moving beyond short-term observations. AIM: This study aimed to assess how the pandemic and associated NPIs affected the incidence of 17 notifiable infectious diseases in Poland over an extended period, from January 2014 to December 2022. METHODS: Using national surveillance data aggregated mon

From smallpox eradication to the future of global health: innovations, application and lessons for future eradication and control initiatives.

Technological advancements, including landmark innovations in vaccinology through molecular virology, and significant transformation and changes in the society have taken place since the eradication of smallpox thirty years ago. The success with eradicating smallpox gave confidence for initiating the eradication of other diseases, such as malaria and polio. However, these efforts have not been as effective, as recorded for small pox, for a variety of reasons. There is now a debate within the global health community as to whether eradication campaigns should be abandoned in favor of less costly
