Assessment of a caudal external thoracic artery axial pattern flap for treatment of sternal cutaneous wounds in birds.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of a caudal external thoracic artery axial pattern flap to treat sternal cutaneous wounds in birds. ANIMALS: 16 adult Japanese quail. PROCEDURE: A cutaneous defect in the region of the mid-sternum was surgically created in all quail. In 6 quail (group I), an axial pattern flap was created from the skin of the lateral aspect of the thorax and advanced over the sternal defect. In 8 quail (group II), a flap was similarly created and advanced but the flap vasculature was ligated. All quail were euthanatized at 14 days after surgery and had necropsies performed. Secti

Endogenous retinoids in the early avian embryo.

Vitamin A is required to rescue the vitamin A-deficient quail embryo from early death, but the endogenous presence of bioactive retinoids has not been documented in these embryos. The analysis of 2000 pooled stage 5-8 normal quail embryos described here provides for the first time direct evidence for the presence of endogenous all-trans-retinoic acid (5 nM) and 3,4-didehydroretinoic acid (4 nM), signaling molecules known to be potent ligands for nuclear retinoic acid receptors. The demonstration of all-trans-retinal (80 nM), all-trans-retinol (100 nM), 3,4-didehydroretinol (200 nM), and retiny

No Evidence That Life History Strategies Shape Within-Body Mosaics of Ageing.

Tissues across the body may age at different rates, which creates within-body mosaic ageing. Life history strategies shape ageing patterns a … ense of somatic tissues to allow for increased reproductive function. Here, we used Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) artificially selected for increased versus reduced reproductive investment (egg size) to test how reproductive strategies modulate within-body variation in ageing patterns, by measuring telomere length as an ageing biomarker in blood cells …

Longer and faster sperm exhibit better fertilization success in Japanese quail.

In birds, sperm storage tubules (SST) located in the utero-vaginal junction are thought to be a site of sperm selection; however, the exact mechanism of sperm selection is poorly understood. Here, we investigated sperm entry into the SST and subsequent fertilization success under a competitive situation created by artificial insemination of a sperm mixture obtained from 2 males. We employed 2 quail strains, a wild-type and a dominant black (DB) type, as this allows easy assessment of paternity by feather coloration. We found paternity of embryos was biased toward DB males when a sperm mix with

The Protective Effect of Xanthohumol on the Content of Selected Elements in the Bone Tissue for Exposed Japanese Quails to TCDD.

Dioxins (including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) are highly toxic and persistent chemicals widely distributed in the environment in trace amounts, and are side products of industrial and chemical processes. Exposure to dioxins leads to multiorgan morphological and functional abnormalities, including within the bone tissue, disrupting its microarchitecture and mechanical properties. Xanthohumol (XN) is a chemical compound classified as a prenylated flavonoid, distinguished by multidirectional biological action. The aim of the study is to assess whether xanthohumol, as a substance w

The contribution made by a single somite to the vertebral column: experimental evidence in support of resegmentation using the chick-quail chimaera model.

The somitic involvement in the formation of the vertebral column was examined using the chick-quail chimaera model. Single cervical somites from quail donor embryos were transplanted into similarly staged chick host embryos. Following further incubation, serial sections of variously staged embryos were stained with the Feulgen reaction to distinguish the two cell populations. Quail cells were generally located within a delimited region in one half of each of the two adjacent vertebrae, as well as in the intervening disc. The horizontal plane of division through each vertebra passed approximate

Effects of low intensity red light on testicular recrudescence in Japanese quail.

Experiments were conducted to determine if sighted and blind plumage color mutants of Japanese quail elicit comparable testicular recrudescence when exposed to long daily photoperiods of low intensity red light. Quail exhibiting testicular regression after exposure to 8 hr of light daily for several weeks were blinded via bilateral ocular enucleation. A control group was not enucleated. Two light intensities, 1.4 and 2.8 lx, were applied to half of the birds in each group during a 16 hr daily photoperiod for several weeks. Enucleated birds and birds under the 2.8 lx intensity had greater testi

Diagnostic Detection of H7N3 Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza in a Commercial Game Bird Flock.

Low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) H7N3 was diagnosed in a flock of commercially raised Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) breeder hens. The birds were submitted with an initial complaint of a drop in egg production and watery droppings. Initial PCR testing of the flock for avian influenza (AI) was negative; however, mortality started increasing drastically, prompting further examination and the submission of more birds to the diagnostic laboratory. On antemortem examination, the birds appeared lethargic, with ruffled feathers, and had labored breathing. Gross examination revealed poor b…

Experimental evidence for maternal offloading of mercury pollution via reproduction.

Of the many pollutants released into the environment by human activities, mercury is among the most toxic. Interestingly, studies typically find reproducing females to exhibit lower mercury concentrations than males, suggesting that maternal elimination of this toxic compound occurs via transfer to developing embryos. Yet, clear evidence for the causality of such an effect is lacking, because of the absence of studies that manipulated reproductive activity. We experimentally manipulated reproductive status in an avian model organism, the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), and exposed reproduc…

Experimental extra-pair copulations provide proof of concept for fertility insurance in a socially monogamous bird.

Extra-pair paternity is common among socially monogamous birds, but whether females benefit from having extra-pair copulations remains unresolved. In this study, I staged single extra-pair copulations in captive pairs of socially monogamous Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and used extra-pair males of a different colour to identify extra-pair fertilizations. This eliminated among-female variation in extra-pair copulations as a source of variation in extra-pair fertilizations and tested whether a single extra-pair copulation would insure against infertility of the social male. Overall, the pr…

Nano-selenium ameliorates lead oxide nanoparticle-induced reproductive toxicity in japanese quails via restoring gonadal antioxidant activity and normalization of sex hormones.

This study investigated the protective effects of nano-selenium (Nano-Se) against lead oxide nanoparticle (PbNPs)-induced reproductive toxicity in Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica). Birds (n = 288) were allocated into control, Nano-Se (0.2 mg/kg diet), PbNPs (0.25 or 0.50 µg/ml drinking water), and combined Nano-Se + PbNPs groups. PbNP exposure caused dose-dependent growth suppression and severe reproductive toxicity, marked by diminished sperm quality, reduced gonadal weights, and deteriorated egg quality (reduced shell thickness and Haugh units). These effects were associated with elevated…

The relationship of the male's proctodeal gland size to sperm-egg interaction and the duration of fertility in Japanese quail.

In avian species, male fertility significantly impacts reproductive success. This study investigates the relationship between proctodeal gland size in male Japanese quails and sperm function, as well as female fertility duration. Six hundred adult Japanese quails were selected and housed in individual cages. Males (n = 300) were divided into 6 groups (50/group) based on the size of their proctodeal glands. Females (n = 300) were randomly assigned to corresponding groups. After acclimatization, sperm kinematics and the frequency and weight of foam discharge were evaluated. Males were paired wit

Descriptive embryological insights of the colorectum of quail embryos with concern to its functional morphology.

BACKGROUND: Quail is an interesting emerging bird species gaining attention in developmental embryology research due to its small size, quick lifespan, and fast growth rate. These characteristics make quail an ideal model for examining the development of the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the embryonic development of the colorectum was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of its functions in digestion, absorption, and immunity. METHODOLOGY: The morphological anatomy and microscopical structure of the colorectal wall of 74 embryos were studied using light and scanning elec

Japanese quail classified by their permanence in proximity to a high or low density of conspecifics: a search for underpinning variables.

Test of sociality in poultry is mainly based on the bird's individual ability to make quick social discriminations. In recent years, a density-related permanence (DRP) test has been developed that enables us to classify young birds (while in groups) according to their individual permanence in proximity to either a high or low density of conspecifics (HD or LD, respectively). Thus, the result of the classification depends not only on the bird's individual response but also on the outcome of the social interactions within the whole group. The birds' performance in DRP was associated with underly

Newcastle Disease Virus Infection in Quail.

Newcastle disease (ND), caused by virulent strains of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), is a devastating disease of poultry worldwide. The pathogenesis of ND in quail is poorly documented. To characterize the ability of virulent NDV strains to replicate and cause disease in quail, groups of 14 two-week-old Japanese quail ( Coturnix japonica) were experimentally inoculated with 108 EID50 (embryo infectious dose 50%) units of 1 of 4 virulent NDV strains: 2 isolated from quail ( N2, N23) and 2 from chickens ( Israel, Pakistan). At day 2 postinfection, noninfected quail (contact group) were added to …

Impact of high and low anxiety trait on object habituation and discrimination: evidence from selected lines of Japanese quail.

Compared to rodents, the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performances has been less studied in birds. Yet, birds are frequently exposed to stimulations that constitute a potential source of anxiety and can affect their adaptation to their living conditions. The present study was aimed at evaluating, in birds, the relationship between levels of anxiety and object habituation and discrimination with the use of Japanese quail lines divergently selected for a fear response, tonic immobility. Previous studies demonstrated that the selection programme has modified the general anxiety trai

Effect of snake venom of Agkistrodon halys on atherosclerosis and blood characteristics in Japanese quail.

Extracts of snake venom have been widely used for the treatment of vascular thrombotic diseases, yet the therapeutic mechanism is not clear. The effect of snake venom fractions on atherosclerosis in Japanese quail was studied. The venom of Agkistrodon halys was fractionated by DEAE-cellulose chromatography and the pooled protein fractions that resulted were injected intravenously into the quail with aortic atherosclerosis induced by dietary cholesterol. After 7 weeks of injections on every other day, the quail were killed, blood clotting times and serum cholesterol levels were determined, and

Individual and combined effects of Fusarium moniliforme culture material, containing known levels of fumonisin B1, and Salmonella gallinarum infection on liver of Japanese quail.

Three hundred day-old Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into two groups with 150 quail in each group. One group was maintained on quail mash alone, while Fusarium moniliforme culture material was added to quail mash in the second group from day 5 of age and was supplied at a rate of 150 ppm fumonisin B1 (FB1)/kg mash. At day 21, each group was further subdivided into two groups, yielding four groups with 75 birds apiece, which served as the control (group CX), the Salmonella Gallinarum alone group (group CS), the FB1 alone group (group FX), and the group fed FB1 and infe…
