Compression injury of the epiphyseal growth plate: fact or fiction?

It has been hypothesized that a longitudinal compression force on a growing long bone may cause partial or complete closure of a physis by crushing the germinal cell layer. In the absence of a fracture of the physis, the roentgenograms at the time of injury would be normal. Thus, this diagnosis can be made only in retrospect. In order to prove such a hypothesis, the following criteria would have to be met: (a) normal findings on roentgenograms taken in at least two planes at the time of injury, (b) no treatment, and (c) subsequent positive roentgenographic findings showing partial or complete

[Painful hip joint with epiphyseal dysplasia (author's transl)].

Among patients who visited our hip clinic, eighteen patients from ten families were diagnosed as mild or atypical cases of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia or multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. Clinical and X-ray examinations of these patients showed common characteristic features as follows. 1. They usually had short stature but were not dwarfs. Their facial features and body proportions did not suggest hereditary bone dysplasia. 2. Although the disease might be transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner, its occurrence among these families was found to be sporadic. 3. Symptoms of the hip joint main

Shear strength of the human femoral capital epiphyseal plate.

After the determination of the shear strength and modes of failure of the capital femoral epiphyseal plates in twenty-five pairs of hips obtained post mortem from children five days to fifteen years and ten months old, with the plate intact on one side and with the perichondrial fibrocartilaginous complex removed on the other, the gross and microscopic morphology was studied. The shear strength of the human epiphyseal plate varied with age and was greatly dependent on the surrounding perichondrial complex in infancy and early childhood, but less so in adolescence. When this complex was excised

Solitary bone cyst with epiphyseal involvement: a case report.

A large solitary bone cyst involving the epiphysis produced 5.0 cm shortening of the proximal humerus in a 15-year-old girl. Biopsy revealed the cyst was filled with thin yellow fluid under pressure and lined by a fibrous membrane. X-rays 9 months after biopsy demonstrated progressive cyst obliteration. A review of literature revealed no similar case. It is postulated that solitary cysts rarely may involve the physeal and epiphyseal structures and thereby retard longitudinal bone growth.

Syndrome of epiphyseal dysplasia, short stature, microcephaly and nystagmus.

This report describes two brothers with short stature, congenital nystagmus and microcephaly. The radiographic findings disclosed small, irregularly shaped epiphyses, square iliac bones and flattened acetabulae. The humeri and femora were short. The parents were normal. The syndrome is possibly X-linked, or autosomal recessive in origin.
