Detection of Hydraulic Oil-Polluted Soil Using a Low-Cost Electronic Nose with Sample Heating.

Monitoring soil contamination from petroleum products is vital for protecting human health and the environment. In forestry, hydraulic oil spills frequently result from leaks in equipment such as harvesters. This study evaluates a custom-built, inexpensive electronic nose, equipped with a Figaro TGS gas sensor array, for discriminating between pristine and contaminated soil samples. Two oil types and three pollution intensities were analyzed. The constructed electronic nose applied two sensor operation modes: (i) response to change of sensor operation condition from clean air to target odors a

The Prevalence and Control of Bacillus and Related Spore-Forming Bacteria in the Dairy Industry.

Milk produced in udder cells is sterile but due to its high nutrient content, it can be a good growth substrate for contaminating bacteria. The quality of milk is monitored via somatic cell counts and total bacterial counts, with prescribed regulatory limits to ensure quality and safety. Bacterial contaminants can cause disease, or spoilage of milk and its secondary products. Aerobic spore-forming bacteria, such as those from the genera Sporosarcina, Paenisporosarcina, Brevibacillus, Paenibacillus, Geobacillus and Bacillus, are a particular concern in this regard as they are able to survive in

Identification of chronic wasting disease prions in decaying tongue tissues from exhumed white-tailed deer.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions cause fatal neuropathies in farmed and free-ranging cervids. The deposition of prions in natural and humanmade environmental components has been implicated as a major mechanism mediating CWD spread in wild and captive populations. Prions can be deposited in the environment through excreta, tissues, and carcasses from pre-clinical and clinical animals. Furthermore, burial of CWD-positive animals may reduce but not completely mitigate prion spread from carcasses into the surrounding environment. Here, we analyzed exhumed, decaying deer carcasses for the prese

Medical surveillance for hazardous waste workers.

The efforts to clean up hazardous waste disposal sites have led to an increasing number of workers involved in these activities. Industrial hygiene surveys have demonstrated that these workers are potentially exposed to low levels of multiple contaminants during the work day and to high levels of some contaminants for very short time periods. Personal protective equipment and work practices are important components in protecting workers from these exposures. Medical monitoring for these workers is problematic. While monitoring for the potential health effects of these multiple exposures may be

Preliminary investigation of bacterial surface contamination in emergency ambulances in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Emergency ambulances are vital in prehospital care but carry a high risk of healthcare-associated infections due to confined spaces, high patient turnover, and brief cleaning intervals. Routine disinfection protocols are in place; however, their effectiveness in South Korean ambulances has not been formally evaluated. METHODS: This pre-post observational study examined bacterial contamination on six high-touch surfaces across five operational ambulances in Province G, South Korea. Swabs were collected immediately before and after daily disinfection performed by paramedics. Bacteri

Alcohol wipes are the most justifiably sustainable disinfection method for Goldmann tonometry.

The essential technique of Goldmann tonometry is thought to have a risk of nosocomial infection, and thus there has been pressure to use single-use tonometer tips or slower and more-costly methods of disinfection for reusable tips. Here we review the evidence of infection from tonometry and the evidence behind different disinfection methods. The only infection reported to be transmitted by tonometry is adenoviral epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, which is also transmitted without tonometry and is a relatively low-morbidity infection. More serious eye infections or systemic infections have never b

Reusable tourniquets for blood sampling as a source of multi-resistant organisms- a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The use of reusable tourniquets is widespread around the world, and reports suggest they may be overused. Several studies have shown that reusable tourniquets can affect the spread of pathogens between patients. Based on available studies, this review aims to analyse the indirect transmission of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens present on blood collection tourniquets, which may spread infectious diseases between patients in daily clinical practice. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revi

Flexible gastrointestinal endoscope processing challenges, current issues and future perspectives.

BACKGROUND: At present, the most frequent method for processing flexible gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopes is cleaning followed by high-level disinfection as terminal sterilization is often not practicable. Post-processing monitoring studies consistently show high levels of positive cultures remaining on endoscopes, which can lead to patient infection and even fatality. The processing deficiency is attributed to the complex design of endoscopes, incomplete cleaning, formation of biofilms and lack of margin of safety with high-level disinfection. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that flexible GI endos

[Complications due to an oral injury caused by diving].

A 42-year-old man presented himself with a complaint of recurrent swelling of the chin. After clinical and radiographic examination, it was shown to be an injury caused by the use of an insufficiently disinfected mouthpiece when diving at an exotic destination. Oral injuries caused by diving mouthpieces are widely known. It is less well known that an untreated injury can ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Framework for evaluating anthrax risk in buildings.

If Bacillus anthracis (BA), the organism that causes anthrax, is known or suspected to have contaminated a building, a critical decision is what level of contamination is unacceptable. This decision has two components: (1) what is the relationship between the degree of contamination and the risk to occupants, (2) and what is an acceptable risk to occupants? These lead to a further decision: (3) how many samples must be taken to determine whether a building is unacceptably contaminated? We discuss existing data that bear on these questions, and introduce a nomogram that can be used to investiga
