Governance frameworks and decision-making models for intensive care units in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive care units (ICUs) operate at the intersection of advanced technology, complex ethical decision-making and resource-intensive care. While many high-income countries have developed institutional governance mechanisms-such as Clinical Ethics Committees, structured triage policies and formal palliative care consultation pathways-to support ethical deliberation and accountability in ICUs, the applicability, structure and reported outcomes of such frameworks in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain unclear and dispersed across disciplines. OBJECTIVE: This scoping r

Ethical considerations for advancing research using organoid models derived from the placenta.

BACKGROUND: The advent of organoid culture systems has revolutionized our ability to model and study complex tissues in vitro. The placenta is one of the last human organs to have a functional organoid model developed: trophoblast organoids. These 3-dimensional structures, derived from placental tissue, offer researchers a valuable tool for studying previously inaccessible processes that occur within the womb and play a significant role in determining the health of the offspring. While primarily used for research, trophoblast organoids hold promise for clinical applications, including prenatal

Ethical and definitional considerations in research on child sexual violence in India.

BACKGROUND: While critically important, child sexual violence (CSV) research poses numerous ethical and safety challenges. Recently, the studies dedicated to understanding and addressing CSV in India have been on the rise, but no published ethical guidelines to direct such research currently exist. To help inform ethical and safety recommendations for the design, conduct, and reporting of future CSV research in India and similar settings, we systematically reviewed the ethics and safety practices reported in recent Indian CSV literature. METHODS: A multi-tiered approach was used to understand

Genitourinary vascularized composite allotransplantation: a review of penile transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) has developed over the past 20 years, resulting in promising new reconstructive prospects for extensive soft tissue defects. More than 200 VCAs have been performed worldwide, including five genitourinary (GU)VCAs and here we review the most recent literature in this field. RECENT FINDINGS: Developments in GUVCA are continuously evolving to improve patient outcomes and suggest ethical equivalency to solid organ transplant. Recent treatment options have focused on preventing GUVCA complications by acknowledging the immunogenic

Exploring the Gaps in Practical Ethical Guidance for Animal Welfare Considerations of Field Interventions and Innovations Targeting Dogs and Cats.

Domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and cats (Felis silvestris catus) are common species targeted by nongovernmental or intergovernmental organizations, veterinarians and government agencies worldwide, for field interventions (e.g., population management, rabies vaccination programs) or innovations (e.g., development of technologies or pharmaceuticals to improve animal welfare). We have a moral responsibility to ensure that the conduct of this work is humane for dogs or cats, and to consider the human communities in which the animals live. Ethical review is widely accepted as being integral…

Circumcising human subjects: An evaluation of experimental foreskin amputation using the Declaration of Helsinki.

This paper explores ethical considerations for active studies of circumcision, i.e., the amputation of the foreskin, in the form of a case study of three major trials performed in African countries in the early 2000s. The paper outlines the function of the foreskin and method and history of its amputation as well as its current use in attempting to combat the global AIDS crisis. These trials are then interrogated in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. In particular, the irreversible nature of amputation is given great consideration. The case studies are found to have serious failures

Triage ethics in mass casualty incident simulation: A phenomenological exploration.

BackgroundDisaster scenarios challenge both novice and experienced nurses to navigate complex ethical dilemmas in resource-limited environments. Traditional nursing education often leaves new nurses unprepared for the ethical demands of disaster nursing. Utilitarianism must often guide triage ethics and decision-making. There is a critical need to equip nursing students with these ethical competencies.Research question/AimThis study explores nursing students' lived experiences using introductory triage ethics in mass casualty incident simulation (MCIS).Research designA qualitative, interpretiv

Legal and Ethical Considerations for Clinical Research in Neuromodulation in the European Union: The Chimaera Checklist.

INTRODUCTION: During the last century, many ethics codes have emerged, sometimes embedding legally binding instruments, sometimes encoding good clinical practice for the first time. Apart from the general ethical considerations in use of neuromodulation devices, regulators have tried to shield the patient, implanters, and society from possible risks related to such devices, namely, the protection of the patient's privacy and ensuring enduring manufacturer responsibility for the lifecycle of the device. This review aims to reveal the limits of ethics guidelines, the personal responsibility of t

Ethical challenges of emerging anatomical technologies in UK public engagement.

Anatomical technologies that enhance opportunities for teaching, research, and public engagement are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. This narrative review critically examines the ethical dimensions of these emerging anatomical technologies for use in anatomical outreach activities, from a UK legal and cultural perspective. While innovations such as 3D printing, imaging, virtual and augmented reality, and "synthetic donors" expand opportunities for anatomical teaching, and by extension anatomical outreach, they also complicate established ethical standards that the anatomy community ha
