A 70-year-old woman developed massive subretinal exudation after surgical repair of a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Postoperative choroidal detachment suggested a choroidal source of the subretinal exudate. We believe the cause of the choroidal detachment and exudation was vortex ampulla obstruction resulting from the encircling band. The subretinal exudate underwent gradual resolution and did not influence the anatomic result of retinal reattachment.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of pleural effusions and identification of complicated parapneumonic effusions remain important challenges in clinical practice. Although Light's criteria are routinely applied, additional pleural fluid parameters may provide complementary information in selected patients.
AIMS: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of pleural fluid lactate and the pleural fluid-to-blood lactate ratio in pleural effusions and to examine their association with complicated parapneumonic effusions and drainage approach.
METHODS: This study included 110 patients who underwent pleural

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) using pleural effusion and ascites from children with sepsis.
METHODS: In this study, children with sepsis or severe sepsis and appeared pleural or peritoneal effusions were enrolled, of whom the pleural effusions or ascites and blood samples were conducted pathogen detection using both conventional and mNGS methods. The samples were divided into pathogen-consistent and pathogen-inconsistent groups based on the consistency of mNGS results from different sample types, and into exudate and transudate

We present a rare case of recurrent leishmaniasis infection in a female in her 80s who re-presented with a pleural effusion. The patient was initially investigated as an outpatient for cytopenia and underwent a bone marrow biopsy which subsequently diagnosed visceral leishmaniasis. Following full treatment, and apparent recovery, she re-presented with pleural effusion, hypoalbuminaemia and cytopenia. Leishmania was eventually isolated in a pleural fluid sample obtained on therapeutic drainage, and she was treated for a recurrence at a tertiary infectious disease unit. This interesting and chal

Selecting appropriate laboratory tests based on available evidence is central to improve clinical effectiveness and impacting on patient outcome. Although long studied, there is no mutual agreement upon pleural fluid (PF) management in the laboratory context. Given the experienced confusion about the real contribution of laboratory investigations to guide clinical interpretation, in this update, we tried to identify useful tests for the PF analysis, aiming to unravel critical points and to define a common line in requesting modalities and practical management. We performed a careful literature

BACKGROUND: To explored the clinical, pathological, and bacteriological characteristics of pleural-based masses occurred during anti-tuberculosis (TB) treatment in patients with pleural TB.
METHODS: Patients referred with newly diagnosed pleural TB were prospectively enrolled into the study. Patients were followed up throughout the treatment, and clinical data were recorded. Percutaneous biopsy and surgical tissues from pleural-based masses were examined histologically and samples sent for PCR. Cytokines in the pleural effusions and clinical factors were collected and compared between differe

BACKGROUND: The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (ISRSFC) was published recently to provide standard reporting terminology for serous fluid. To date, several ISRSFC reclassification studies have reported a wide range of diagnostic category frequency and the associated risk of malignancy (ROM). Herein, the authors applied the ISRSFC to report pleural and peritoneal effusions retrospectively in a community hospital setting.
METHODS: With Internal Review Board approval, 446 peritoneal effusion specimens and 299 pleural fluid specimens from 576 patients in three commu

INTRODUCTION: We sought to assess the utility of the International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS) in the context of our department's routine practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 1028 archived effusion cytology (pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial) cases from 2018 to 2019, and re-classified them along the international system into the following diagnostic categories: nondiagnostic (ND), negative for malignancy (NFM), atypia cells of undetermined significance (AUS), suspicious for malignancy (SFM), and malignant (MAL).
RESULTS: The full distribution of the cases examined

Pleural effusion (PE) is a common yet complex disease that requires specialized, multidisciplinary management. Recent advances, novel diagnostic techniques, and innovative patient-centered therapeutic proposals have prompted an update of the current guidelines. This document provides recommendations and protocols based on a critical review of the literature on the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and new therapeutic options in PE, and addresses some cost-effectiveness issues related to the main types of PE.

Burns often cause the damaged tissue to produce a large amount of exudate and the formation of blisters on the wound. The burn blister fluid contains a large number of molecules related to wound healing, which can reflect the state of local tissue microenvironment of the burn wound. Analyzing relevant information such as cellular components, signal mediators, and protein molecules in burn blister fluid is helpful to understand the local reaction and tissue microenvironment of burn wounds, and then help clinical burn treatment. In this article, by understanding the production mechanism of burn

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic pleural effusions are defined by an eosinophil count ≥ 10% in pleural fluid and represent approximately 10% of exudative pleural effusions. They are associated with a large spectrum of etiologies, both benign and malignant. Drug-induced eosinophilic pleural effusions remain rarely described.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: After ruling out other causes with a careful diagnostic assessment, we retain paliperidone as the etiology, given the disappearance of the pleural effusion after drug discontinuation.
RESULTS: We report the first case of eosinophilic pleural effusion induce
