Impact of mask use on facial emotion recognition in individuals with subclinical social anxiety: an eye-tracking study.

Previous studies suggested that social anxiety is associated with interpretation bias, theory of mind deficit, and eye gaze avoidance when identifying facial emotions. We tested the hypothesis that socially anxious individuals would be more affected by mask use during facial emotion recognition. 88 healthy undergraduates with various levels of social anxiety were invited. Participants judged the emotions of masked and unmasked facial expressions. Eye Movement Analysis with Hidden Markov Models was used to analyze participants' eye movement patterns during the task. Potential confounders includ

Exploring the role of epileptic focus lateralization on facial emotion recognition in the spectrum of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence increasingly shows that facial emotion recognition (FER) is impaired in refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (rMTLE), especially in patients with a right focus. This study explores FER in both mild (mMTLE) and refractory forms, examining the influence of epileptic focus lateralization on FER. METHODS: 50 MTLE patients, categorized by epilepsy severity and focus lateralization, were compared with healthy controls. FER was assessed using the Ekman Faces Test (EFT), which evaluates recognition of six basic emotions, alongside a battery of cognitive and mood tests. RES

Recognition of facial expressions of emotions in tactile drawings by blind children, children with low vision and sighted children.

In the context of blindness, studies on the recognition of facial expressions of emotions by touch are essential to define the compensatory touch abilities and to create adapted tools on emotions. This study is the first to examine the effect of visual experience in the recognition of tactile drawings of facial expressions of emotions by children with different visual experiences. To this end, we compared the recognition rates of tactile drawings of emotions between blind children, children with low vision and sighted children aged 6-12 years. Results revealed no effect of visual experience on

Altered recognition of fearful and angry facial expressions in women with fibromyalgia syndrome: an experimental case-control study.

Evidence relative to facial emotion recognition and the role played by alexithymia in fibromyalgia syndrome is rare and heterogeneous. In this work, we investigated this ability in fibromyalgia investigating the implicit behaviour in the facial emotion recognition task, focusing on fear and anger. Twenty women with fibromyalgia and twenty healthy women as controls performed a facial emotion recognition of fearful and angry expressions. Their implicit behaviour was scored in accordance with the redundant target effect. The level of alexithymic traits through a standard psychological questionnai

Are there differential deficits in facial emotion recognition between paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia? A signal detection analysis.

This study assessed facial emotion recognition abilities in subjects with paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia (NPS) using signal detection theory. We explore the differential deficits in facial emotion recognition in 44 paranoid patients with schizophrenia (PS) and 30 non-paranoid patients with schizophrenia (NPS), compared to 80 healthy controls. We used morphed faces with different intensities of emotion and computed the sensitivity index (d') of each emotion. The results showed that performance differed between the schizophrenia and healthy controls groups in the recognition of both neg

Facial emotion recognition abilities of individuals with schizophrenia and the influence of parental bonding-An exploratory study in a forensic sample.

Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia experience cognitive impairments, including a decline in social cognition, which encompasses facial emotion recognition. Facial emotion recognition is an important aspect of social interaction, guiding people's actions and influencing their social functioning. Early childhood experiences, such as parental attachment, are one of the most influential factors in the development of many psychiatric symptoms including impairment of social cognition. Our aim was to explore this poorly researched area. We investigate the hypothesis that dysfunctional parenting

Relationships of self-awareness and facial affect recognition to social communication ability in persons with traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause changes to the injured person's physical ability, cognitive functioning, and social interactions. Since these attributes largely determine a person's concept of who they are, TBI poses a threat to sense of self. Due to the importance of social communication skills for community integration, impairment of these skills is a particular threat to sense of self. The present investigation sought to explore characteristics that influence social communication abilities. We hypothesized that both ability to interpret facial affect and self-awareness would be assoc

Abnormal recognition of facial expression of emotions in depressed patients with major depression disorder and schizotypal personality disorder.

The aim of this paper is to study the recognition of facial expression of emotions in depressed patients with major depressive disorder (MD) and schizotypal personality disorder (STP). The pictures of sad, emotionally neutral, and happy faces followed by a masking stimulus were displayed for 80 msec on a computer screen randomly in the left or right hemifield of vision (LHF and RHF). The subjects had to respond by pressing a three position key. Multiple analysis of variance revealed that all depressed patients, relative to control subjects, made more errors in a task of recognition of facial a

GCA-ODN: A global context-aware dropout network for joint facial landmark detection and emotion recognition under occlusion.

We propose the Global Context-Aware Dropout Network (GCA-ODN), a CNN-based, computationally practical neural architecture for joint facial landmark detection (FLD) and facial expression recognition (FER) under partial facial occlusion. GCA-ODN learns a shared embedding that encodes facial geometry and affective cues, improving reliability under face masks, large pose variations, and non-uniform illumination. The model integrates three complementary components: (i) a global context module that captures long-range spatial dependencies and injects holistic structural cues into local features, (ii

A Transformer-Based Multimodal Fusion Network for Emotion Recognition Using EEG and Facial Expressions in Hearing-Impaired Subjects.

Hearing-impaired people face challenges in expressing and perceiving emotions, and traditional single-modal emotion recognition methods demonstrate limited effectiveness in complex environments. To enhance recognition performance, this paper proposes a multimodal fusion neural network based on a multimodal multi-head attention fusion neural network (MMHA-FNN). This method utilizes differential entropy (DE) and bilinear interpolation features as inputs, learning the spatial-temporal characteristics of brain regions through an MBConv-based module. By incorporating the Transformer-based multi-hea

Social impairment in survivors of pediatric brain tumors via reduced social attention and emotion-specific facial expression recognition.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Survivors of pediatric brain tumors (SPBT) experience significant social challenges, including fewer friends and greater isolation than peers. Difficulties in face processing and visual social attention have been implicated in these outcomes. This study evaluated facial expression recognition (FER), social attention, and their associations with social impairments in SPBT. METHODS: SPBT (N = 54; ages 7-16) at least 2 years post treatment completed a measure of FER, while parents completed measures of social impairment. A subset (N = 30) completed a social attention asses

Sleep deprivation selectively enhances interpersonal emotion recognition from dynamic facial expressions at long viewing times: An observational study.

Observational and experimental studies have shown that sleep deprivation disinhibits emotional responses to disturbing and rewarding external events. On the other hand, most studies on sleep deprivation and interpersonal emotion recognition report that sensitivity to others' emotions is dampened during sleep deprivation. This is at odds with current neuroscientific theories of social cognition that assume that affective experiences and emotion recognition in others are closely tied at the neural and physiological level. In this observational study we show that sleep deprivation can actually in

Wanting it Too Much: An Inverse Relation Between Social Motivation and Facial Emotion Recognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This study examined social motivation and early-stage face perception as frameworks for understanding impairments in facial emotion recognition (FER) in a well-characterized sample of youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Early-stage face perception (N170 event-related potential latency) was recorded while participants completed a standardized FER task, while social motivation was obtained via parent report. Participants with greater social motivation exhibited poorer FER, while those with shorter N170 latencies exhibited better FER for child angry faces stimuli. Social motivation partia

STFMF-Net: A Hybrid Attention-Driven Multi-View Fusion Framework for Non-Contact Anxiety Recognition Via Facial Videos.

Non-contact anxiety recognition methods based on facial videos offer a convenient and efficient approach for large-scale mental health screening. Most existing studies on anxiety recognition based on facial videos have mainly used facial expressions or remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). However, anxiety states manifest through multiple behavioral and physiological dimensions, such as fine-grained eye movement trajectories, pupil diameter, eye-blink, and rPPG signals. Therefore, single-view approaches do not fully capture information related to anxiety. To address this limitation, we propose a

The positivity effect reflects preserved perceptual sensitivity: a signal detection theory analysis of facial emotion recognition in ageing.

Older adults typically show reduced recognition of negative facial emotions alongside relative preservation of happiness-the positivity effect. Whether this pattern reflects differences in perceptual sensitivity, response strategy, or both has not been tested with Signal Detection Theory (SDT). SDT decomposes performance into perceptual sensitivity (d') and response criterion (c), allowing us to determine whether age-related changes operate at the perceptual or decisional level. Seventy-six older adults and sixty-four young adults completed a six-alternative forced-choice identification task w
