A bibliometric analysis and visualization of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) has drawn an increasing amount of attention over the last 20 years. At present, there is a shortage of intuitive analysis on the trends in development, key contributors, and research hotspots topics in the NPH field. This study aims to analyze the evolution of NPH research, evaluate publications both qualitatively and quantitatively, and summarize the current research hotspots. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted on data retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database between 2003 and 2023. Quantitative assessments

Review of theories into the pathogenesis of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) represents a unique form of hydrocephalus characterised by the paradox of ventriculomegaly without significant elevations in intracranial pressure, with the clinical triad of gait instability, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence. A myriad of neurobiological correlates have been implicated in its pathophysiology. We review the literature to provide an up-to-date, narrative review of the proposed mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of NPH, proposing a holistic framework through which to understand the condition. We conducted a narrative review

Evidences in the treatment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is characterized by gait apraxia, cognitive dysfunction and urinary incontinence. There are two main treatment options: ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) and endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). However, there are doubts about which modality is superior and what type of valve should be applied. We are summarizing the current evidence in INPH treatment. METHODS: an electronic search of the literature was conducted on the Medline, Embase, Scielo and Lilacs databases from 1966 to the present to obtain data published about INPH treat

Comment: the trouble with "n" in normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

Idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a reversible syndrome of gait impairment, dementia, and incontinence that affects persons over 65 years of age.(1) Currently, the only effective treatment is surgical implantation of a shunt(2); however, the need for pharmacologic adjunctive treatments was noted at the 2005 NIH workshop on hydrocephalus.(3.)

The differential diagnosis and treatment of normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) arises in adulthood and is characterized by a typical combination of clinical and radiological findings. The mean basal intracranial pressure is normal or mildly elevated. The typical signs of the disease are gait impairment, urinary incontinence, and dementia. The difficulty of distinguishing NPH from other neurodegenerative disorders is the likely reason why some 80% of cases remain unrecognized and untreated. According to current evidence, the spontaneous course of NPH ends, for the vast majority of patients, in dependence on nursing care. ME

Predictors of outcome in patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

From 1982 until 2000 we examined 200 patients diagnosed with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in a prospective study. From the patients who were surgically treated by a shunt implantation we could re-examine 155 (78%) at a mean time interval of 7 months after the operation. NPH differed in severity according to the results of the intrathecal infusion test in an early state NPH (without brain atrophy) and late state NPH (with brain atrophy). In our study, we focused on the possible predictors: patient age; length of disease; clinical signs including gait ataxia, dementia, and bladder inconti

The diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is a syndrome that is characterized by gait impairment, cognitive decline and urinary incontinence, and is associated with ventriculomegaly in the absence of elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure. There is significant variation in the clinical presentation and progression of this disorder, and its diagnosis often represents a challenge for neurologists and neurosurgeons. Various supplemental tests, including the CSF tap test, external CSF drainage via spinal catheter, and CSF outflow resistance determination, can improve the accuracy of pre

[Radionuclide cisternography in the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus].

An overview of significant research results of the last four decades as well as the author's own experience have served as a basis for the presentation of the radioisotope method and the radiopharmaceuticals in the diagnostics of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Also the physiology of the formation of PM-R its flow and absorption have shortly been discussed. Hydrocephalus is a major clinical, diagnostic and therapeutical problem. In the initial diagnosis of that pathology, methods like CT and MRI play an important role, which has also been the subject of this article. A clear and useful cl

Predictors of outcome in patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

Despite emerging knowledge of over 40 years, the postoperative results after shunt implantations in patients diagnosed for normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) have not improved significantly in the last decade. For this reason, predictors have to be identified in order to preoperatively predict the course of disease. From 1982 to 2000, we examined in a prospective study 200 patients diagnosed for NPH. Of the patients who were surgically treated by a shunt implantation we could re-examine 155 (78%) in a mean time interval of 7 months after operation. The NPH was graduated according to the resul

Cerebral hemodynamics in the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

We studied the effect of CSF drainage on cerebral blood flow (CBF) in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and non-NPH dementia using the 133Xenon inhalation technique. Dementia patients had lower CBF than matched elderly normals. Flow values for NPH and non-NPH patients did not differ before or after CSF drainage. CBF did not increase after lumbar puncture, and these measurements were not useful in predicting the outcome of ventricular shunt surgery. Postoperative CBF did not increase after successful shunting.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Aging people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) may develop idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH). OBJECTIVES: Describe clinical, investigational, and treatment courses in pwMS and INPH. METHODS: Retrospective Mayo Clinic database review of "MS" and "NPH" and "Gait disorder" 1996-2025. INCLUSION CRITERIA: 1) pwMS; 2) INPH; 3) INPH gait impairment (gait apraxia and/or ataxia). EXCLUSION CRITERIA: non-INPH gait impairment or absent neurologist examination. Demographics, clinical course, INPH triad features (gait disorder, cognitive dysfunction, bladder dysfunction) were rec
