PURPOSE: To determine whether consanguinity is a risk factor for keratoconus (KC).
METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to all patients presenting to St. John Eye Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel. Questionnaire included data on demographic characteristics and potential risk factors. Patients were divided into two groups: cases with KC, in at least one eye, who were diagnosed by the attending ophthalmologist on the basis of abnormal corneal topography and at least one of the common signs of the disease; and controls presenting for problems other than KC and free of systemic and ocular condition

Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory corneal disease, which involves changes of the corneal shape, due to thinning of the corneal stroma. BACKGROUND: The aim was to investigate the fluctuations in monochromatic ocular aberrations with accommodation and tear-film changes in moderate keratoconic eyes.
METHODS: We measured the changes in ocular higher-order aberrations in 10 moderate keratoconic and 10 visually normal eyes to accommodative stimuli ranging from zero to 5.00 DS using a Hartmann-Shack aberrometer. Keratoconus (KC) is a bilateral, non-inflammatory, and progredient corneal ectasia that mostly occurs as a sporadic disorder, but it has long been recognized that a significant minority of patients also exhibit a family history. PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence and incidence of hospitalized keratoconus (KC) in Denmark.
METHODS: Data extracts from the National Patient Registry under the National Board of Health (which covers the entire Danish population) were analysed.
RESULTS: The prevalence of KC was estimated at 86 patients per 100,000 residents and the incidence at 1.3 per 100 000 per year.
CONCLUSION: KC is rather widespread in Denmark, with more than 4600 affected individuals.

In this study, 20 keratoconus corneal tissue were examined. In TEM examination of the cornea, the epithelium was irregular in thickness. I suggest that the location of the cone in keratoconus is most often located in the paracentral inferonasal quadrant of the cornea due to the presence of the most senile epithelial cells in this location. These cells may be more vulnerable than younger epithelial cells to the chronic subtle trauma of eyelid rubbing and may be more prone to release enzymes that thin the cornea.

A new method is described for calculating the topography and curvature of an irregularly shaped cornea. Vertical planes of light are projected onto the cornea and points in x, y, z space are calculated from the light images on the corneal surface.
