Congenital midline cervical cleft: a report of two cases.

Congenital midline cervical cleft is an uncommon malformation of the anterior neck. We report the cases of two patients with such an anomaly who had been born within 10 days of each other at a regional hospital in upstate New York. Fewer than 100 cases of congenital midline cervical cleft have been reported in the literature, and to the best of our knowledge, none of the other reported cases occurred so close to each other in terms of time and location. Diagnoses in both cases were established by clinical observation soon after birth. No likely epidemiologic commonalities between the two patie

Prune-bell syndrome: a report of twelve cases and review of the literature.

Prune-belly syndrome is a rare congenital disease involving a deficiency of abdominal muscles, genitourinary abnormalities, and cryptorchidism. About half of the patients with the disease have associated musculoskeletal abnormalities, including club foot and dislocation of the hip. We saw twelve patients with this disease, four of whom required extensive orthopaedic treatment.

Potocki-Lupski syndrome in conjunction with bilateral clubfoot.

Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS) is a rare chromosomal microduplication syndrome resulting in multiple congenital abnormalities including developmental delays, autistic features, and certain structural anomalies, with cardiovascular being the most common. The phenotype of this contiguous gene duplication syndrome is quite variable and may include musculoskeletal abnormalities. Given the infrequency and novelty of this disorder, full phenotypic characterization of PTLS has not yet been fully elucidated. We present a case of severe bilateral clubfoot in a patient with PTLS. Diagnosis was made by a…

The association of congenital spinal anomalies with imperforate anus.

Ninety-four patients with congenital imperforate anus were studied to investigate: (1) the incidence of congenital spinal anomalies; (2) the orthopedic significance of these anomalies; (3) the incidence of other musculoskeletal disorders; and (4) the incidence of anomalies in other organ systems in the anal-spine anomaly group. There was a 38% incidence of spinal anomalies in 94 patients with congenital imperforate anus. Most of these abnormalities were sacral, and there were no related or progressive spinal deformities. The incidence of other musculoskeletal anomalies was much lower than of t

Cutaneous manifestations of Costello syndrome.

Cutaneous findings are common in Costello syndrome, but have not been extensively reviewed in the dermatology literature. We present the cutaneous and histopathologic findings from two cases of Costello syndrome and review previously described cutaneous features of this syndrome. Both patients had manifestations of Costello syndrome with thick, lax skin on the dorsal aspects of hands and feet, deep palmar and plantar creases, curly hair, hyperkeratoses, acanthosis nigricans, papillomas, and multiple pigmented lesions. One patient had multiple syringomas on the forearms, a finding not previousl

Linear and Whorled Nevoid Hypermelanosis - A Case of Pigmentary Mosaicism.

Linear and whorled nevoid hypermelanosis is a rare skin pigmentation disorder, characterized by linear streaks and whorls of hyperpigmented macules along Blaschko's lines. Lesions are commonly restricted to the trunk, neck, and extremities, sparing the face, palms, soles, and mucosae. Associated with this, certain cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurological, and developmental anomalies have been reported in the literature. Herein, we present a rare case of linear and whorled nevoid hypermelanosis involving the face, with musculoskeletal, genital, aural, and ocular abnormalities.

Patterns of Co-Occurring Birth Defects in Chinese Infants With Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: A National Hospital-Based Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: The landscape of co-occurring birth defects among infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains underexplored. AIMS: This study aims to elucidate the complex patterns of co-occurring defects in Chinese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed cases from the Chinese Birth Defects Monitoring Network (2007-2019) with CDH that presented along with at least one additional defect but without a syndromic diagnosis. Adjusted observed-to-expected prevalence (O/E) ratios were calculated for all two- to five-way combinations to discern patterns of co-occurring defects wit

Bifid nose as the sole manifestation of BNAR syndrome, a FREM1-related condition.

BNAR syndrome (MIM608980) is a very rare condition: nine cases belonging to three unrelated families were reported since its first description in 2002. The distinctive clinical feature is the bifidity of the tip of the nose and its association with anorectal and/or renal anomalies. Its molecular basis consisting of biallelic FREM1 missense or nonsense mutations was elucidated after studying the original Egyptian family and was confirmed in two families originating from Afghanistan and Pakistan. We describe a fourth family originating from Turkey with signs challenging the diagnostic criteria s

Cerebro-oculo-facio-skeletal syndrome: report of two cases from Turkey with postmortem findings.

We describe two cases of COFS (cerebro-oculo-facio-skeletal) syndrome in two newborn females of consanguineous parents. The clinical, radiological and pathological features of the patients are presented. One of the two cases had 11 pairs of ribs (Case 1) and the other had three-lobed left lung (Case 2), neither of which has been described in COFS syndrome previously. To our knowledge, these are the first reported cases of COFS syndrome from Turkey.

Musculoskeletal disorders of the lower limb--ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging correlation.

The purpose of this paper is to familiarize general radiologists and specialists with the sonographic and corresponding magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of various musculoskeletal disorders of the lower limb. Technologists and radiologists should be familiar with all imaging techniques for the investigation and evaluation of musculoskeletal abnormalities. The role of high-resolution ultrasound (US) is highlighted, as well as the complementary relation between both imaging modalities. We also discuss some of the advantages of US over MRI in the investigation of musculoskeletal disord…

Facial malformations and spinal anomalies. A predictable relationship.

Facial malformations have generally been associated with spinal anomalies, but this report reviews patients with specific facial abnormalities and attempts to document accompanying spinal anomalies. The results indicate that the most common types of facial malformations vary predictably in their influence on spinal or other musculoskeletal abnormalities. Apert and Goldenhaar syndromes are associated with significant spinal anomalies.

Circadian rhythm: The hidden "puppet master" behind musculoskeletal disorders.

Circadian rhythm (CR), regulated by the central biological clock in the hypothalamus and synchronized with local clocks in peripheral tissues, orchestrates the physiology of localized tissues in response to the periodic rhythmic variations of the environment. Environmental cues and behavioral factors, such as light exposure, feeding, and exercise, can synchronize or desynchronize these rhythms, and abnormalities can lead to disruption of the human CR. Certain modern behaviors, such as traveling across time zones, shift work, and irregular eating patterns, disrupt the body's natural CR, thereby

Biallelic variants in PAX3 cause Klein syndrome.

Waardenburg syndrome is a group of genetic conditions that can cause hearing loss and pigmentation deficiency of the hair, skin, and eyes. Klein-Waardenburg syndrome (Waardenburg syndrome type 3) represents a distinct presentation of Waardenburg syndrome type 1 and includes musculoskeletal abnormalities in addition to dystopia canthorum hearing loss and pigmentary changes. Heterozygous or homozygous variants in the PAX3 gene cause Klein-Waardenburg syndrome. Here we report on a new severely affected child, with a homozygous PAX3 variant (c.251C>T; p.Ser84Phe), review the features of the syndro…

Congenital midline upper lip sinuses with intracranial extension - A variant of nasal dermoid? An embryology-based concept.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to present the comparative analysis of midline congenital upper lip sinuses (MCULS) and nasal dermoids (NDs). The clinical similarity of congenital midline pathologies of the midface was interesting subject for further studies. Therefore, histopathological, and embryological background were also analyzed to verify a hypothesis that NDs and MCULSs are the different variants of the same entity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 27 surgically treated pediatric cases with the congenital midline sinus of the nose (n = 25) or upper lip (n = 2). Seven children

Variations of accessory thoracic muscles identified in the ethnically diverse whole-body donation population in Northern California.

Accessory thoracic muscles in humans are relatively common and it is important to draw awareness to their variable presentations and potential clinical implications owing to their close association with the axilla. Here we report four cases of accessory thoracic muscle variations identified in the ethnically diverse whole- -body donation population in Northern California (4 out of 48 donors, 8.3%). Of these, combined presentations of thoracic accessory muscles were observed in two of the donors, one involving bilateral axillary arches and a pectoralis quartus on the left and the other a unilat

The morphological consequences of segmentation anomalies in the human sacrum.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the high frequency of segmentation anomalies in the human sacrum, their evolutionary and clinical implications remain controversial. Specifically, inconsistencies involving the classification and counting methods obscure accurate assessment of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae. Therefore, we aim to establish more reliable morphological and morphometric methods for differentiating between sacralizations and lumbarizations in clinical and paleontological contexts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using clinical CT data from 145 individuals aged 14-47 years, vertebral counts and the s
