As smaller infants are cared for in our NICUs, maintaining skin integrity and preventing epidermal stripping have become key aspects of neonatal nursing care. This article describes a research utilization project in which research-based knowledge, expert information, and scientific practice guided a practice change in one NICU. The implementation process, based on the Iowa model, included the following steps: identification of triggers; review, critique, and evaluation of the literature; determination of the soundness of the research base; identification of alternate strategies; making the pra

Caput succedaneum and cephalohematoma are conditions that rarely evoke much concern in the NICU but deserve more attention. This article examines the two conditions, reviews the literature, discusses possible complications, and leaves the reader with a heightened awareness of these seemingly benign lesions.

This article describes a neonatal nurse's personal experience in working with a critically ill newborn and his Amish family in a newborn intensive care unit in Montana. The description includes a cultural experience with an Amish family with application to Madeleine Leininger's theory of culture care diversity and universality.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the range of practices employed by units conducting deferred cord clamping at very preterm birth.
DESIGN: Qualitative study using semistructured interviews with neonatal doctors, nurses, midwives, obstetricians and managers in a sample of UK maternity units.
PARTICIPANTS: 33 neonatal doctors, neonatal nurses, midwives, obstetricians and managers.
SETTING: UK maternity units in 2012.
RESULTS: Four key themes emerged. The first concerns the variation in guideline content, the absence of a practice of stabilisation with cord intact, and issues with implementing and mai

BACKGROUND: The rapid and accurate assessment of neonatal asphyxia is critical to preventing potentially fatal outcomes. Therefore, nursing students must acquire the skills to assess newborn conditions immediately after birth and implement appropriate interventions. Virtual reality (VR) simulation education has emerged as a promising tool for nursing education, offering repetitive and customizable clinical training while ensuring patient safety and overcoming spatiotemporal limitations.
AIM: This study investigated the effects of a contactless hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar s

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is a major pathogen of lower respiratory tract infections in children (<5 years) and older individuals, with outbreaks mainly reported among infants in hospital pediatric departments and intensive care units (ICUs). An outbreak of severe neonatal pneumonia occurred in a postpartum center in Shenyang city, China, from January to February 2021. In total, 34 respiratory samples were collected from 21 neonates and 13 nursing staff. The samples were screened for 27 pathogens using a TaqMan low-density array, and 20 samples tested positive for HRSV, including

The Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation is the leading educational resource on neonatal resuscitation, and the ninth edition was released in October 2025, updating the standard of care for newborn resuscitation. The changes in this new edition of NRP are sweeping, with twice as many changes as the previous edition, and include two new highly requested chapters on resuscitation of infants with congenital heart disease and resuscitation of postnatal infants convalescing in the NICU. This narrative review provides in-depth coverage of the changes and discusses the evidence supporting them, enablin

Illicit drug use during pregnancy is common and probably underestimated in the majority of published studies. The infant exposed to opiates or other drugs of dependency during intrauterine development is at risk for post-natal withdrawal as well as to long-term problems that are associated with drug-effects and often, adverse social circumstances. This article examines the early management of the infant and mother for detection and monitoring of drug-exposure, pharmacological intervention for withdrawal and the management of associated, particularly infective and psychosocial, problems. The nurse administering any BZD--especially lorazepam--to a neonate must be knowledgeable about the drug's effects and risks and must remember that BZDs do not provide analgesia. The sedative effects of lorazepam will increase with concomitant use of opioids. The nurse must be alert for adverse reactions (Table 1). Close monitoring of the neonate's respiratory effort and blood pressure is important. Because of the various reported cases of myoclonus in neonates after lorazepam administration, close observation for seizure activity is imperative. Although lorazepam use may be beneficial in spec

BACKGROUND: To investigate the epidemiological and phenotypic characteristics and molecular relatedness of L. monocytogenes, which were cultured from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples isolated from two neonates.
METHODS: In the present case study, two infected neonates were interviewed and epidemiological investigation performed. The phenotypic characteristics and molecular relatedness of L. monocytogenes was characterized by serotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
RESULTS: The field investigation found that the two neonates were born in

Critical access birthing units are essential for the well-being of maternal and neonatal patients in rural areas; however, many rural hospitals are closing their birthing units due to a variety of complex factors, including the difficulty of maintaining highly trained staff. These closures worsen the already vast "maternity care deserts" found across much of the rural United States. Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the most common complications during childbirth, but nurses providing care at low-birth-volume hospitals in rural areas often lack routine exposure to postpartum hemorrhage and have

BACKGROUND: Globally and nationally approximately a quarter of neonatal deaths and an unknown number of intrapartum stillbirths are attributed to intrapartum complications known as birth asphyxia. Simple stimulation and resuscitation can save many of these lives.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the capacity of the Ethiopian health system to provide neonatal resuscitation with bag and musk.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected from 741 health facilities and one birth attendant at each facility was interviewed. This paper focuses on 711 nurses and midwives. Based on a guided interview, response

Normal ears come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, likely because of the impact of racial and familial characteristics (phenotypes), the complexity of the embryologic development (malformations), and the potential for intrauterine factors such as oligohydramnios or intrauterine compression to produce distinct physical characteristics in normally formed tissues (deformations). This article will provide an overview of the embryologic origins of the external ear. Relevant terminology used to describe the ear will be reviewed, along with objective guidelines for the assessment of ear size, sh

Health care professionals who care for neonates must be able to recognize early signs/symptoms that suggest acute illness. Such early recognition and appropriate management may improve outcome. This article presents a case study and permits the reader to evaluate data and make decisions about diagnoses and treatment. Current research-based approaches to management are also discussed.

AIM: Adverse drug events are a daily concern in neonatology departments. The aim of this study was to assess the professional practices of preparation and administration of injectable forms of medications in neonatology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A professional practice evaluation with regard to the preparation and administration of various injectable forms of medications in different neonatology units within a given department was conducted by a pharmacy intern based on an assessment grid comprising ten criteria. Following an initial assessment, the results were presented to the care team, whic
