The prevalence of heel pressure ulcers is a major health care problem. Heel ulcers develop as a result of pressure, shear, or friction concentrated on a small area over a bony prominence that lacks subcutaneous tissue. Significant risk factors for development of heel breakdown include immobility, age, mental status, nutrition, chronic illness, and orthopaedic surgical procedures, especially hip pinning and hip replacement surgeries. It is important for nurses to identify patients at risk for heel pressure ulcers and to initiate appropriate preventive interventions. This article discusses the e

Although helmet therapy is a widely established method in the treatment of positional plagiocephaly, therapeutic regimens remain contentious, especially regarding starting age. Hence, this study investigated the impact of starting age and severity on the effectiveness of helmet therapy. A total of 213 pediatric patients treated for positional plagiocephaly with an orthotic device were enrolled in this study. Pre- and post-treatment calvarial asymmetry was measured according to the Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index (CVAI) using 3D-Photogrammetry. Patients were classified by age at which treatment w

STUDY DESIGN: Bench research-biomechanical study.
INTRODUCTION: Static progressive orthotic devices are efficient in treating contractures. However, current outriggers are unable to keep force transmission and the force application angle (FAA) constant.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the biomechanical performance of the Isoforce outrigger, a novel extension orthosis.
METHODS: A hand model was used to measure the required force at the outrigger and FAA, while simulating resolution of different contracture angles. We also tested feasibility in a small patient series.
RESULTS: The force re

A recently designed Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker (CROW) was used in the treatment of 18 patients with diabetic neuroarthropathy involving the foot and ankle. Eight of these patients had no surgery before the use of the CROW. In ten patients, the device was used for prolonged immobilization after surgery for complications of neuropathic joint disease. The CROW is a rigid, custom, full-foot enclosure ankle-foot orthosis. It was used after an initial period of cast immobilization. The CROW effectively controls limb edema, returns the patient to ambulatory activities, and prevents significant

INTRODUCTION: Disasters often cause large numbers of injuries, including fractures, lacerations and amputations, which overwhelm emergency services. Orthotic and prosthetic solutions can provide timely primary care, reduce the need for surgery and prevent complications. A structured framework for preparedness and response is required to integrate these solutions into disaster risk management. This study aims to develop such a framework to enhance rehabilitation and reduce secondary injuries.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This multimethod protocol comprises three phases. First, a systematic scoping re

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, once thought to be a rare clinical entity, has been observed to be a major cause of acquired flatfoot deformity in adults. Several risk factors have been identified, ranging from inflammatory conditions to obesity. A physical examination using a series of tests, including the single-limb rise, first-metatarsal rise sign, and the "too-many-toes" sign, used in combination with selected radiographic imaging techniques, allows classification of the severity of disease. This staging system then serves as the basis for formulating the treatment options, which inc

This article describes the five major foot deformities or problems often seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: hallux valgus, pronation of the foot, depression of the metatarsal heads, hammer or claw toes, and tendocalcaneal bursitis or subplantar spur formation. These deformities contribute to the development of common rheumatoid gait deviations such as decreased velocity, cadence, and stride length; poor heel-toe pattern; and abnormal patterns of weight bearing. Nonsurgical treatment for these problems includes joint protection methods, assistive gait devices, orthotic intervention, an

The recommended treatment for idiopathic congenital clubfoot deformity involves a series of weekly castings, surgery, and a period of bracing using a foot abduction brace (FAB). Depending on the age of the child, the orthotic should be worn for periods that reduce in duration as the child develops. Compliance is vital to achieve optimal functional outcomes and reduce the likelihood of reoccurrence, deformity, or the need for future surgery. However, compliance is typically monitored by self-reporting, which is time-consuming to implement and lacks accuracy. This study presents a novel method f

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a muscular condition that leads to muscle loss. Orthotic devices may present a solution for people with DMD to perform activities of daily living (ADL). One such device is the active trunk support but it needs a control interface to identify the user's intention. Myoelectric control interfaces can be used to detect the user's intention and consequently control an active trunk support. Current research on the control of orthotic devices that use surface electromyography (sEMG) signals as control inputs, focuses mainly on muscles that are directly linked to t

An orthosis developed in Dokuz Eylül University (DEU) at the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Department of Orthotics and Prostheticsis is described. It is applied as a non-invasive device attached to the distal ring of the Ilizarov external fixator to keep the ankle joint in a neutral position and prevent ankle equinus during tibial lengthening with Ilizarov technique. This minimises additional invasive techniques such as heel cord release and prophylactic pinning of the heel and the foot, and manipulation under anaesthesia. It may also be detached by the physiotherapist or pati

Bracing is a widely used conservative treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients, yet there is no consensus on the optimal amount of force applied. Although a number of different sensors have been developed to continuously monitor the applied pressure and force, they have several limitations, including inadequate overall force distribution and displacement. They also cause discomfort with limited wearability. In this study, body pressure mapping knitwear (BPMK) integrated with fourteen silicone-embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors is developed to monitor immediate and o

During the postoperative hand rehabilitation period, it is recommended that the repaired flexor tendons be continuously glided with sufficient tendon excursion and carefully managed protection to prevent adhesion with adjacent tissues. Thus, finger joints should be passively mobilized through a wide range of motion (ROM) with physiotherapy. During passive mobilization, sequential flexion of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint followed by the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is recommended for maximizing tendon excursion. This paper presents a lightweight device for postoperative flexor ten

The majority of people with muscle weakness or paralysis lose their ability to walk and require various assistive devices like a walker to walk. Although various studies have examined the effect of different types of anterior and posterior walkers on different walking variables, so far no studies compare anterior versus posterior walker on forces and torques applied to the lower extremities. This paper presents a novel approach of using a passive saddle-assistive device (S-AD) to investigate the effect of this device on the torques of the joints. To measure the effectiveness of the device, a v

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA)-the progressive degeneration of synovial joints-is a worldwide problem that affects society, is associated with age and is the dominant reason for pain and immobility of the locomotor system. In the population, 70% of people over the age of 70 show some signs of OA. Overall, up to 25% of the total population is affected, due to the general aging of the population itself, and this is an increasing tendency. However, in people over the age of 40 the incidence of OA is already rising due to posttraumatic or secondary forms, like dysplasia, malalignment and other ba
